Surprise Proposal at Bluemont Vineyards
June 7, 2019

Katie originally thought that she was taking part in a photo session that her boyfriend, Michael, had “won”, but little did she know that it was a photo shoot of her proposal! The day before this lovely couple’s one year and seven month anniversary, Michael made Katie the happiest girl in the world when he asked for her hand in marriage. Michael arranged a perfect wedding proposal at Bluemont Vineyard. He spent months planning and preparing a moment that he knew would live on forever in both of their hearts and minds.

Michael flawlessly assembled an amazing cover story that Katie totally bought. To set the scene of the surprise, he told Katie that he won his company’s annual March Madness tournament bracket pool. Every year they give out extravagant gifts, like spa days, an Xbox, or Apple Watches. When Michael told her that he had won a photo session, it did not seem too far-fetched for Katie.

After some forged emails and conversations, Katie was 100% on board with the cover story of a photo shoot. Michael went on to meticulously plan the shoot to include a surprise marriage proposal. He discussed how they overall execution with the couple’s photographer KPC and Co.  On the day of the proposal, Katie didn’t think anything of it when she was asked to face the opposite direction, count to three, and turn around. Katie was so taken surprised and shocked to see Michael down on one knee, that she didn’t even hear a word of the proposal speech Michael had memorized for her. After the proposal, Michael had one more surprise up his sleeve. He slipped their families into Bluemont’s tasting room and surprised her with a quaint celebration.

From Katie: Michael told me he had won his company March madness bracket and the prizes to choose from were an Apple Watch, Xbox or a two hour professional photography shoot. He knew (obviously) I would try to persuade him into the photo shoot which he finally agreed to after a couple of days of nagging! We agreed to do it at Bluemont Vineyard where we had our first date. We started taking pictures and all was going as normal. At one point, our photographer Lori asked me to turn and look towards the grapevines as she wanted to capture Michael walking up behind me and wrapping his arms around me. Once Michael had come up behind me she said “okay Katie, turn around and saying something funny to make him laugh!” I turned around and there was the love of my life, on one knee with the most unbelievably brilliant ring I’d ever seen. I was completely full of emotion and joy as this is the moment I’ve dreamt of since I was a little girl. He had this beautiful speech he was trying to say but I couldn’t help but cut him off and say “YES!!!” before immediately diving down to hug him. After we spent a few minutes relishing in the moment, we agreed to go meet the photographer inside the main winery to take pictures of the ring. I walked up the stairs to the main floor, turned the corner and heard “CONGRATULATIONS!” Again, to my complete shock and surprise, was both Michael and I’s families with champagne in hand and a beautifully decorated area complete with signs, balloons, food and cake. When I say this day was the most special and surreal moment in my life, it’s the truth. I couldn’t have imagined a better way to begin my life with my soulmate.

From Michael: Planning a proposal should be fun, exciting, meaningful and a little nerve-wracking (in a good way). That is, unless you want to push the envelope, and orchestrate a complex story line involving multiple parties, weeks of planning and hundreds of details that need to be executed flawlessly. In that case, planning a proposal should make you feel like Danny Ocean from Oceans 11, planning the most unforgettable moment instead of the ultimate casino heist. The most special person in your life deserves to feel just how special they are to you; so the proposal was the perfect time for me to do just that.

I tricked her into thinking I won my companies March Madness Tournament; which had a few awesome prizes to choose from such as a private photoshoot. I created a series of fake emails, fake companies and A LOT of fake golf outings to help support the story line and buy myself time to execute the plan. I had already chosen the date, time and location but made sure to let her “choose” as we continued through the process and the fake emails kept pouring in. I worked closely with the photographer, who deserves an Oscar for her performance, and the special events coordinator to map out every single detail of the visit. I even brought out the colored pencils and drew pictures, maps and decoration design layouts to get everyone on the same page. Most importantly, I was able to get both of our families to come celebrate with us as a second surprise once we walked into the winery to wrap things up with the photographer.

The effort, stress and countless hours spent planning and coordinating the moment I was finally going to ask my best friend to marry me was worth every single piece of it; a million times over. Seeing the love of my life’s eyes light up as I was down on one knee, and her pure state of shock, was honestly the most rewarding experience of my life.

Jesse + Kerry’s Surprise Proposal at the Lincoln Memorial
April 15, 2011

We’re ending this week on an incredibly sweet note with a proposal at the Lincoln Memorial.  Jesse asked Jennifer Chase to capture his proposal to Kerry on a beautiful afternoon last fall.  Such a romantic groom!  Jennifer was on hand to capture the surprise proposal, and then took the newly-engaged couple for a fun portrait session around the Reflecting Pool.  Yay for happy couples!

From Jennifer: Jesse asked me to photograph his surprise proposal to Kerry at the Lincoln Memorial.  They’ve known each other since they were 17 and as Jesse tells it he’s been in love with her ever since.  They went their separate ways but finally got together a couple years ago when they ran into each other through friends.  One of their first dates was at the Lincoln Memorial so it’s a special place for both of them.  Jesse chose a holiday on a beautiful fall weekend and I’ve never seen the Memorial so crowded!  I was hiding  pretty far back at a spot we had picked off to the side.  Of course, she said yes!

Surprise DC Wedding Proposal!
August 11, 2016

One tip for anyone getting ready to propose to the love of their life – hire a photographer to capture the surprise moment! We absolute love being able to have a behind the scenes look at Wasi and Farheen’s DC wedding proposal from Akbar Sayed Photography. Here is a look at what went into capturing such a special, yet secret, moment from the DC wedding photographer himself!

“Wasi contacted me and explained that he wanted the moment that he proposed to his love captured. Wasi is from Toronto and Farheen is from Bangladesh and would be in DC for a cousin’s wedding and it just so happened that he was coming down for a friend’s graduation at the same time. Not being a local, he relied on me to come up with a plan of action that would set the stage for a iconic DC proposal.  He told me ahead of time that he planned to take her out for a picnic and then wanted to end the day with the proposal.  I immediately thought that he should have his picnic on the Washington Monument lawn followed by a proposal with the Monument as the backdrop.”

“In a effort to not tip Farheen off, I made sure to look as touristy as possible and also brought a long range zoom lens along.  Even with the zoom lens, I needed to get closer so I had to improvise a bit.  I found a couple of sisters who were taking pictures on the lawn, so  I told them Wasi’s proposal plan and that I needed to get closer.  As soon as they found out about the surprise proposal plan they were more than happy to help. As they made their way down past the reflecting pool I was on the other side of the water. Once again, some strangers were happy to help disguise me! On a side note, aside from the actual proposal the willingness of people to help was one of my favorite takeaways of the day.  Once Wasi and Farheen made their way to the pre-planned spot, Wasi got down on one knee, proposed with a beautiful ring from Tiffany’s and the rest is history!

Surprise Old Town Wedding Proposal: Emily + Brian
November 13, 2012

I love a good wedding proposal in Washington DC area story, especially when they involve a secret photographer waiting in the background to capture it all! One of those smart grooms-to-be is Brian who, with the help of local photographer {astrid} photography, planned a surprise proposal for Emily in Old Town Alexandria. While Emily and Brian walked around the park with their adorable pup, Astrid approached them pretending to be a dog photographer asking to snap a few shots. We’ll let Astrid tell you the rest¦

Brian had been emailing me for weeks trying to come up with a good plan to surprise Emily. So the morning of the proposal, I was walking around this little park area of Old Town Alexandria pretending to take pictures of the water. When they walked up, I eagerly started playing with their dog, explaining to Emily that I was actually a dog photographer and asked if she would mind if I took a few photographs.

I kept chatting along with her (barely making eye contact with Brian since I was paranoid) and started shooting. First up close, then I backed up further and further away (which Brian knew that meant he was in a good lighting location and could do it anytime) until I saw him get down on one knee. Of course she was completely surprised and I loved the reaction we caught on camera!

Congratulations Emily and Brian!

You might need to sit down for this! I have a surprise DC wedding proposal on the National Mall to share. It is so sweet, I promise you’ll get goosebumps! Earlier this week over the Memorial Day holiday, Kristi Odom, along with second shooter Kristina, sat under a tree along the tidal basin and secretly photographed while Chad proposed marriage to his girlfriend, Kristen. And to make it even sweeter, Chad is in the U.S. Coast Guard and he proposed over Memorial Day weekend….Chad, you are a keeper! This is the stuff fairy tales are made of, for sure!

DC Union Market Proposal
August 24, 2018

We are smitten with today’s surprise Union Market proposal! When today’s photographer, Megan Rei Photography shared it with us, we knew we had to feature it. From the adorable couple to the hidden photographer and the vibrant colors, we loved it all.

For this Washington, DC proposal, Vedant made dinner reservations for himself and Sneha at Masseria, and looped the restaurant staff in on his proposal plans. As Vedant and Sneha had drinks in the lounge area, Megan acted like she was taking photos for the restaurant until she got the signal from the Masseria staff. One of the waitresses brought a “menu” to the table. It was actually a children’s book that Vedant had designed to tell their love story! Isn’t that so adorable?! He then popped the question and Megan was there to capture every sweet moment.

Afterwards the three of them walked over to Union Market to get photos. After photos by the iconic heart wall and Never Give Up mural, they stopped for ice cream as well. What’s better for the background of shots of that new bling than an ice cream cone? Nothing!

Give us all the details about the proposal. Vedant: I knew I wanted to create something that we could keep. Sneha is a very nostalgic person and what could be more nostalgic than a children’s book? So I made a children’s book with illustrations about how we met. After that I did some research on how to best get her the book and I figured it would be really great to do it a restaurant and have it be a complete surprise with a waitress bringing it out. We’d talked about going to Masseria for a long time so it seemed like a perfect place!

Sneha: I totally knew the proposal was coming. My mom, my sister, family friends, friends and even the waiter at the restaurant were being so suspicious. I had no idea how he was going to propose though so that was a complete surprise! I am an incredibly nostalgic person so he couldn’t have picked a better way to propose.

How did you know your partner was the one? When did you first know this in your relationship? Sneha: I was really impressed by how loyal he was to his friends and family, he’s also incredibly hardworking and passionate about making the world a better place. Life is tough at times, but having a loving and supportive partner like Vedant makes it easier. Vedant: I was immediately drawn to Sneha’s compassion and big heart and quickly realized she was the type of person I wanted to build a life with. We just fit together like puzzle pieces. Life’s challenges and ups and downs and the uncertainty seem a lot more do-able with Sneha besides me.

We’re all about the bling… Tell us all about that ring! The ring is a custom design by Isabel Bond, a jeweler based out of California. A good friend recommended the designer, Erin. They had their engagement ring designed by Erin as well. She worked very closely with us over the span of two months to design the ring. She was so patient and understanding, and over 40 emails later we arrived at the perfect design. We couldn’t be happier with the ring. It is absolutely beautiful!

Surprise Kennedy Center Engagement!
June 2, 2017

Happy Friday everyone! We wanted to leave you this week with a stunning surprise proposal. Seriously, our jaws dropped when we saw this one. There are so many beautiful details that we were squealing with excitement for these two lovebirds! With the help of Claire Duran Weddings and Events, Ray popped the question to his girl Estefania in style to create a beautiful Kennedy Center engagement.

On the day of the proposal, Ray and a few close friends led Estefania to believe that they were going to meet Claire, a close friend, at the Kennedy Center. They were then to go out to a formal dinner afterwards. This was the perfect excuse to get Estefania all dressed up! When they got to the location of the proposal, everyone was casually talking and laughing and Estefania was none the wiser. Suddenly, everyone cleared away as Ray dropped to one knee to pop the question. All the while, JenS Photography was snapping away from afar. Ray then surprised his new bride-to-be with lovely flowers and a stunning calligraphied cake and letter. We love how thoughtful and personal this was and appreciate the lengths that Ray went to in order to make his proposal spectacular! Thank you to JenS Photography for sharing this stunning Kennedy Center surprise proposal with us today!

Old Town Alexandria Proposal: Sterling + Victoria
March 18, 2016

We love sharing local DC engagement proposals with our readers; being able to be a fly on the wall during such an intimate moment is wonderful. Thank you to Audra Wrisley Photography for sharing Sterling and Victoria’s memorable day with us!

From Audra, the Photographer: Sterling & Victoria’s Old Town Alexandria proposal was one of those perfect days, that remind me of how lucky I am to photograph love on a daily basis! Sterling contacted me a few weeks before this beautiful afternoon, and let me in on his secret surprise for the love of his life, Victoria. His excitement was completely contagious, and we crafted a plan for me to photograph his proposal on Captain’s Row, on one of the couples’ favorite streets in Old Town which is made of historic cobblestones. Needless to say, the romantic proposal went off without a hitch, and I had the honor of photographing this couple with the most genuine love and happiness I could ever imagine! Sterling grew up on an island outside of Washington State, and he was so excited about ending our shoot with a few lovely portraits by the docks in Old Town.

Lincoln Memorial Marriage Proposal: Kate + Kevin
April 16, 2015

I am just absolutely in love with this Washington DC marriage proposal! There’s just something about being able to watch it unfold with these gorgeous photos from Kelci Alane Photography that make it so incredibly romantic. Kevin e-mailed Kelci about a month before his proposal in need of a photographer. They met at the Lincoln Memorial to go over logistics. Thankfully, the weather held up and Kelci was able to blend in with the crowd”whew! Everything went perfectly, and as you can see my loves, Kate (great name by the way!) was so surprised. Love it!

Wedding Marriage Proposal in Georgetown: Carmela + Jimmy
January 23, 2015

Warning: Grab a box of tissues because this Washington DC marriage proposal caught on camera is the sweetest thing you’ll see all day! Jimmy surprised Carmela with a puzzle piece scavenger hunt in Georgetown that started at Dean & DeLuca and ended at the Old Stone House. Elizabeth Fogarty Photography was on hand to capture Jimmy get down on one knee and all the sweet moments following!

From Carmela: That Sunday was a busy one. We started our day off normally by going to mass at Georgetown and then walked over to meet some friends for brunch, but little did I know that after our brunch plan Jimmy was running around DC to set up the proposal. When I returned home, I texted Jimmy that I was back and asked where he was. He responded with “Check out the mirror when you get a chance.” Confused, I walked over to our full-size mirror and on top was a puzzle piece with a little envelope that said, “Let’s change it up today.” I opened up the envelope and inside was a note explaining that there were 3 more puzzle pieces I needed to find in DC and those will lead me to him. Clue 1: Our first date (And in case I didn’t remember, he included a Dean & Deluca business card behind the clue)

Georgetown Marriage Proposal Liz Forgarty Photography (7)

I arrived at Dean & Deluca and text him asking if he was there. All he replied was “nope.” So I was left to try to wander the store for clues or something that stood out. I was almost at the back of the store when I got to the sushi counter and found behind the glass a package of two puzzle pieces and a clue wrapped in a red bow. I immediately grabbed it and read the clue. The clue said “Do you remember our first date? “I loved that date. We shared so many memories since then and I want to tell you them. “Next location: 1) Google the coordinates; 2) Meet me there at 7pm”

The coordinates led me to the Old Stone House in Georgetown. This was the location where I first admitted that I liked him and he admitted that he felt the same way. When I texted him that I was one block away from the Old Stone House, I already saw a crowd outside. I thought it was odd, but as I got closer, I noticed that it was only him and a photographer inside the back garden. At this point, I definitely realized that this was not a scavenger hunt towards a fancy dinner: something a little bigger was happening.

He held up the last puzzle piece and began telling me that it was 7 years since we first met at Georgetown and many other happy memories.  He led me down a rose petal covered path up to the bench where we spent an evening chatting and he continued his speech. Then got down on one knee and pulled out a box from his pocket. He asked me to marry him… and I said “YES!”
