Pale Blue Renaissance Inspired Styled Shoot
October 30, 2019

Today’s styled shoot embodies the soft beauty of a Renaissance inspired design.  The Virginia wedding venue had impeccable architecture with a double curved staircase leading out onto the patio centered by a beautiful stone fountain. A long table sat on the porch covered with soft tulle and an array of flowers. The fine china was topped with a place card and macaron. Macaron’s are always a wedding favor favorite of ours! The blue glass goblets and flower vases added a punch of color to the table that we adore! An elegant invitation suite added a final touch to the romantic Renaissance inspired look. Some of our favorite details of the day would have to be the wreath Mr and Mrs chair signs and the champagne tower! Such fun little pops of personality.

To round out the shoot, the bride was dressed in a lace-bodice deep-V Maggie Sottero dress complete with a bright blue sapphire earrings and ring. She wore a bright red lip and sweeping curls to frame her face. Thank you to David Abel Weddings for sharing this blue wedding inspiration with us today!

Bold Art Inspired Wedding Styled Shoot
June 21, 2018

Today’s styled shoot by Completely Yours Events + Design was inspired by a couple who treasures the arts. The bride, who fell in love with watercolors as a child, chose a dress hand-painted by local artist, Violeta Lucce. The vibrant hues of corals, pinks, and oranges are not only completely unique for a wedding dress, but they also pop against the blue linens. We could not imagine making a more unique first impression than this floral painted art inspired wedding gown! An art gallery in Georgetown was the perfect match for the aesthetic, tying in the theme with natural lighting and urban landscaping. Take a look at the bold blue building next door! The room housing the wedding reception table provided the perfect background with bold paintings, and geometric art installations. The intimate feel paired well with the focal portrait framing the table and distinctive paintings on either side. We love the abundant use of color throughout the shoot. Thank you to Completely Yours Events + Design for sharing this art inspired wedding shoot with us today!

The Truth About Styled Shoots
January 4, 2011

Last week was inspiration week here on United With Love.  We featured amazing styled shoots from vendors around the DC area.  Styled shoots are all the rage on wedding blogs these days and for good reason – the photography is gorgeous.  It makes for great blog posts with lots of pretty inspiration!  But, no inspiration week is complete without a little truth.  There are some realities to weddings-in-the-real-world that aren’t captured in styled shoots.  We offered a few tips of our own at the start of the week.  And, today we are fortunate to have VA wedding planner, Janice from Bellwether Events, to give you the real truth to styled shoots.  Take it away, Janice…

emotional-grooms-first-look-for-dc-area-wedding

Magazines and blogs feature many styled shoots to provide you with inspiration during your wedding planning.  But it is important to remember a few things.  The stylists on these shoots spend hours tweaking every detail and posing the models in the carefully selected attire and accessories.   The vendors participating in the shoots bring stockpiles of props in order to make sure that the feeling and message they wish to convey is perfectly executed.  The photographer often selects the location and times the shoot so that the lighting is exactly what they are looking for.  These photos are perfect!  Stunning!  Yet, I worry that they set unrealistic expectations, and also might miss the real meaning of weddings.

Photo shoots, in essence, are designed to have many options, unlimited time and no budgetary restrictions.  In other words, they are not reality.  Very rarely do they even depict a ceremony set up, which is the whole point of the day – the getting married part.  They are not designed to actually feed and entertain one hundred and twenty guests.  Your wedding photographer doesn’t have unlimited time in perfect light with you and a box full of props and accessories.  So, your wedding photos are not going to look like what you see in magazines and on blogs.

If you decide to see each other before the ceremony, your photographer will be limited in time and location with this portrait session.  During the ceremony your photographer will likely be restricted to the back of the room and may not even be allowed to use flash.  By the time he/she gets to the reception room, some guests will have already put down their coats and purses, thus ruining the wide room shots.  When your people of honor give toasts, there will probably be something less than perfect in the background, such as an exit sign.  Tent poles are unattractive. Thermostats and outlets are eyesores.  You will not see these things in styled shoots.  These are the realities of real weddings.

wedding-guests-having-good-time-at-dc-wedding

But, do you know what real wedding photos trump the styled shoots on?  Emotion.  You cannot fake the look on a groom’s face when he sees his bride for the first time, or the pleasure a mom exudes when her little girl is getting married.  Styled shoots will never capture the perfect combination of elation, excitement and terror that is the Hora, or the pure joy of a bride dancing with her father to their special song.  As much as I like to “ooh” and “ahh” over pretty pictures, what brings a smile to my face is the photo of a couple singing their face off to Journey.  These are the moments you will remember and cherish.  These are the photos that will get framed and hung on the wall or inserted into holiday cards.  Not the photo of your table centerpiece or your escort card display.

While it is important to collect pretty pictures from blogs and magazines to help explain to your wedding team what you want them to do, please don’t get distracted from what really matters:  getting married and celebrating afterward!

Finding France: A Parisian Inspired Wedding Shoot in Baltimore
June 25, 2019

We can all agree that European cities hold a charming, enchantingly, historic air that can captivate the masses. Take one step in Paris, and you’ll be in awe. But, did you know that you can be as charmed in a US city? To put this idea to the test, Christine McFarlane Events teamed up with Urban Row Photography to style a shoot around the French influences you can find on the East Coast in Baltimore. When you think of France, you think of soft, warm, feminine colors. The classic, timeless color scheme of dove grey, pale pink, and creamy ivory established the palette for the shoot. These colors were found in the elegant invitation suite and intimate sweetheart table. You don’t need to buy a plane ticket and fly over the Atlantic to pull off a French wedding! With these key concepts and a keen eye, you’re bound to find France.

Location is everything! Major cities on the east coast hold a lot of history and it shines through in the architecture. For the shoot, three “wedding venues” were selected that hold heavy French influence; a boutique hotel, a historic monument, and City Hall. The luxury, boutique Ivy Hotel holds a hidden gem; they host a French inspired courtyard. With ivy covered walls, boxwood trees, and an adorable little fountain, this courtyard is the prime spot for a high end intimate wedding in the heart of downtown. The black and white tiled lobby of The Ivy offers a warm, inviting atmosphere for a quaint cocktail hour. But the location of The Ivy itself drew us in. Just steps away from historic monuments, and a quick walk from City Hall, The Ivy is surrounded by French influence. The marble steps were the perfect location for portraits of our blushing bride- straight out of an editorial fashion shoot. The architecture of Baltimore’s City Hall is dripping in French influence, even down to the green light posted lining the sidewalk out front.

Walking the streets in Paris, you will stumble upon open air markets with various flowers for sale sitting pretty in their vases on a flower cart. We wanted to create this same experience for our guests with the escort card display. Set in front of an ivy covered walk, Everyday Rosé Events created a stunning display with a petite white table and french market vases filled with roses, carnations, hydrangeas, astilbe, astrantia and more! Tied to each stem is the guest’s place card designed by Wild Hearts Calligraphy, and tied to each flower canister is the table number for where they are to be seated. For the bride’s bouquet, Everyday Rosé Events created an overgrown, organic shape and hyper feminine color palette of blooms.

And last but not least, don’t miss the guest of honor! Who better to stand by the bride’s side than woman’s best friend? Pierre, the french bulldog, was the pup of honor and wore a grey suit for the ceremony and just a blush tie to party on.

Romantic & Elegant Grace Kelly Inspired Shoot
October 13, 2017

When you think of timeless elegance and iconic style, who comes to mind? Top of mind for us would have to be Grace Kelly and Jackie O. We know we’re not alone, because the amazingly creative team at Aisle Society had just the same idea! For this dreamy styled shoot, they featured the inspiring designs of Oleg Cassini’s new bridesmaid collection, created just for David’s Bridal. These chic silhouettes and designs truly were the stars of the show. From the dreamy pale pink lace to the sophisticated silhouettes, it was hard for us to pick just one favorite. With breath-taking cathedral veils and the perfect red lip, the brides showcased a timeless elegance that would have made Grace proud! This Grace Kelly inspired shoot couldn’t be more up our alley! We’re in love.

The teams at Storyboard Wedding and Glamour & Grace created a romantic table for two, complete with the most gorgeous sweetheart settee for the newlyweds. For the tablescape, they took their inspiration straight from Grace Kelly herself in a scene from High Society. As the perfect nautical touch and nod to the film, the highlight of the decor is the model boat, floating on a bed of greenery, with “Darling, let’s be adventurers” in calligraphy adorning the sail. Heirloom glassware and silverware add to the chic timelessness, while hand-lettered mussel place cards give an added touch of whimsy.

Capping the celebration was a retro caravan bar. It featured scrumptious champagne accouterment selections like lush blackberries, fragrant rosemary and a dash of pear juice.  The caravan served as the perfect bridge to yesteryear while showcasing modern amenities and stylings. We can’t rave enough about how perfectly Nikki Santerre Photography documented the day. She captured all of the pretty on both film and digital.

Need to make these gowns your own? Don’t worry! Your gals can be dressed to the nines in Oleg Cassini’s new and exclusive collection for David’s Bridal. Although Oleg Cassini is no longer with us, his eye for style and design lives on in this stunning collection. The opulence timelessness of Oleg Cassini is reflected in these regal designs featuring botanical embroidery, lace appliqués, beaded belts, and more. They would make for the perfect mix and match dresses for all of your maids!

Butterfly Kisses Minimony Wedding
November 10, 2020

A butterfly kiss is a fresh, new, almost magical, flutter that warms your heart, soul and mind. This theme embodied the feeling, look and style of this modern mini matrimony styled shoot, which we affectionately dubbed “a minimony”. Our shoot was designed to capture the airy caress of intimacy, and a light pulse of love cascading. This DC wedding inspiration features a bold golden butterfly backdrop for the ceremony, surrounded by draping orchids and modern tulips, roses and hydrangeas on a chic table setting. The butterfly menus are so dreamy as they float above the custom baby blue table topper accompanied by black flatware. Overall, we think this shoot is just like a kiss; timeless and dreamy. Ruby Red Late Summer Wedding Inspiration
December 30, 2019

Today’s ruby red later summer wedding inspiration was designed to showcase the shift from summer to early fall. The sunset tones that are visible throughout, including the stunny ruby accents, compliment the exquisite sunsets seen from the shore of Great Oak Manor, the Maryland wedding venue that served as the beautiful backdrop for this styled shoot. The elegant invitation suite, menus, and place cards feel both vintage and modern with elegant script and a custom monogram. We love that the suite is tied together with a silk ribbon; such a sweet, feminine touch that really elevates the whole set.

Long farmhouse tables were beautifully set with elegant crystal glasses & bohemian accents such as the charger plate and the velvet napkin tie. We adore the touches of pampas grass present in the lush centerpiece. They tie back to the sprig’s in the bride’s bouquet as well! It’s a great fall accent that gives the florals loads of texture and a little whimsy. The cake, a beautiful two toned ruby and white confection, included a floral accent. The gold flecks present on the leaves add to the endless unique and timeless elements of the shoot. Thank you to  Megan Bennett Photography for sharing this elegant summer to fall wedding inspiration with us!
