Modern and Graphic Wedding Invitation Suite
July 12, 2011

A great invitation introduces your guests to the style and feel of your upcoming nuptials.  A fantastic invitation gets them really excited about it.  Enter this beauty.  Modern, graphic and popping with personality, this invitation suite from Wendy of Weswen Design is paper perfection.  Bride Sasha, of RSVP Event Planning and Management, wanted something far from traditional for her Long View Gallery wedding, and that’s exactly what she got!  Not only can you see the creativity in each element, but items like a list of the couple’s favorite DC spots and bold BBQ invitation had guests buzzing about the wedding, and its location!

From Sasha:  “Wendy really did a great job of capturing what we wanted for our invitations.  Our wedding was so contemporary and non-traditional, even a little sassy, and the invitations set the perfect tone for what was to come.  They also got out-of-town guests excited about visiting DC; many of them even stayed for a week.  They just tied everything together perfectly!”

A Very DC Invitation Suite
May 10, 2011

Wedding invitations are a chance to set the tone of your event and let your guests know what they can expect from your wedding celebration.  Beyond just the pretty paper and artful graphics, invitations are a chance to express a little bit about you and your partner.  This is why I really like Sheilah and Chris’s dramatic invitations designed by Susan from Just Ink on Paper in Baltimore.  The invitation suite is not only beautiful, but all of the little touches have meaning to Sheilah and Chris.  They incorporated the local elements from Washington, DC that were personal to them.  The end result was gorgeous!

From Susan:  “Sheilah and Chris came to me pretty early on in their wedding planning, as they were planning a wedding at The Fairfax at Embassy Row in Dupont Circle and wanted invitations to reflect Washington, DC.  The hotel itself is a stunning venue full of sepia-toned images throughout the room where the reception would be held.  Sheilah and Chris choose a striking color combination of copper and black to play on the natural beauty of the hotel.  While a Baltimore couple, DC holds a special connection for both as Sheilah worked for Congress and Chris was part of the secret service for the Reagan administration.  With this in mind, the couple wanted to create stationery with a ‘nod’ to DC without looking to iconic.”

“We choose a few images to use between the save the dates and invitations and printed with a sepia-tone.  The wax seal was something we stumbled on (actually Chris suggested it) as we were looking for something to hold close the save the date pocketfold and the gatefold on the invitation.   We initially were going to design a bellyband printed with the L’Enfant map of DC, but once we found the wax seal, we knew it was a perfect fit.  The seals are actually made of rubber, which alleviates any stress of cracking once mailed.  The L’Enfant Map was then used for the custom envelope liner.”

Thank you so much, Susan for sharing this DC-inspired wedding invitation suite with us.  You can see more of Sheliah and Chris’ wedding photos on Susan’s blog here.  To design custom wedding stationery or for more from Just Ink On Paper, be sure to visit Susan’s website.

Michael + Daniel™s Custom Wedding Invitation Suite
December 7, 2010

Not too long ago, Claudia, from Fig. 2 Design Studio, mentioned to me that she designed a really amazing invitation suite for a same-sex wedding in DC.  I couldn’t wait to see, so I bugged her endlessly until she shared her creations.  She did not disappoint!  Using apple green and espresso on custom letterpress, she designed all of the wedding stationery including invitations, thank you notes, save the date books, menus and favors.

dc-wedding-invitation-suite

Michael and Daniel had an intimate September wedding at the Tabard Inn in Washington, DC.  Having a wedding that was small allowed Claudia to work her magic; right down to the custom thank you notes that each guest received as a favor (complete with a calligraphy stamp of their name)!

From Claudia: The couple wanted a small and intimate event with only very close friends and family.  The Tabard Inn is pretty eclectic and the couple wanted to reflect that vibe while still keeping things formal and intimate.  Because we only needed a small quantity of pieces, everything was hand assembled and given a very personal and customized touch.

The idea of using marble paper came after seeing a wonderful post from Laura of Orange Beautiful‘s The Scoop.  I knew I wanted to use something different for a backer, and I kept looking at patterned papers, even designing patterns of my own.  When I saw the marble, it was obvious that marble paper would be a perfect fit.  Elegant yet eclectic.

The save the date books were based off a Figure A Design holiday promo we did a few years back based off “A Few Of Our Favorite Things.”  Michael and Daniel’s book included a weekend agenda, a list of their favorite places to eat, drink, and visit in DC as well as their own personal favorite things like colors, movies, books, and fondest memory of each other.  The books were part screen printed, part ink jet, and all hand lined and hand bound.

The details:

  • Save the Date book is screen printed, flat printed, hand lined in marble paper and hand bound. It was mailed in A7 boxes.
  • Invitation suite is letterpress printed in apple green and espresso on Lettra double thick paper, each piece – including envelopes – were hand lined in marble paper. The calligraphy for envelopes and reply cards was by Primele.
  • Menus are letterpress printed in apple green and espresso on Lettra double thick paper, and hand lined in marble paper.
  • Thank you notes are letterpress printed in espresso. The envelopes were in two different shades of green and brown, each hand lined in marble paper.
  • Favors are 10 blank note cards and 10 lined envelopes that each guest received with a metallic ink pen and stamp pad for use with a personalized stamp of their name. The stamp calligraphy is by Primele.

Thank you so much, Claudia, for sharing your gorgeous wedding stationery suite!

Wedding Invitation + Paper Good Inspiration
October 11, 2016

Today we want to discuss one of the most important aspects of wedding planning without this item, the wedding just won’t happen! What can this uber important element be? The invitation suite and paper goods, of course! We have teamed up with the super talented team at Basic Invite to bring you some amazing invitation tips and inspiration. And don’t forget to check out all of our amazing local DC area wedding couples who have some amazing paper goods of their own!

more-foil

First and foremost, you must know that an invitation suite does not just include a simple invite asking guests to attend your wedding. There are so many different items that are included in the suite that cannot be forgotten! The save the date generally goes out first and alerts your guest that a special event will be happening on such and such date and that they should block off that day (or weekend!) on the calendar. Generally, this is the first glimpse into your wedding for your guests so it’s a good idea to have it fit the overall theme and aesthetic of the day. A lot of couples like to go with a photo save the date created from those amazing engagement photos we know you took with a more formal invitation to follow. If you want to go with a cohesive set for your entire wedding suite, Basic Invite’s items are all part of a set, making it super easy on you! You can find everything from save the dates to wedding invitations and enclosure cards, wedding menus, wedding programs and even matching thank you cards to finish it off! They make it simple you won’t have to pick each item individually and hope that the work together – you know that each element will fit together perfectly.

basic_invite_23

Once you get to the actual wedding day invitation you want it to fit both your personalities and the day. If a couple is having a super modern wedding, they will want their invitations to fit the design plan so they might utilize a modern font and clean lines as opposed to a couple with a barn wedding who might include rustic elements like a burlap tie or a lacy accent. Whatever design you choose, Basic Invite has a set for you! They have almost unlimited colors with instant previews so you can see how everything is coming together throughout the process. Still not so sure if the design if right for you? No problem! They provide you with the ability to order a printed sample of your own invitation so you can see just what it will look like, even down to the tiniest detail, before you have to place your big order. You may think that seeing your invitation before you order hundreds isn’t a huge deal breaker, but it is. With so many options and details to pick out, you can never be too sure!

basic_invite_66

When it comes to your suite as a whole, don’t forget to include an RSVP card, an envelope for the initial send off and one to include for guests to respond back with, and any other wedding enclosure cards; these would include directions, rehearsal dinner info, registry info, and hotel room blocks. There are so many things to remember and we are so thankful that Basic Invite makes it easy with their incredible sets.

When the wedding day comes, sometimes couples forget how many paper items they might need. Don’t forget to consider menus, escort cards, ceremony programs, guest books and more! When the day is over and you are officially married to the love of your life, you might want to consider your thank you cards. If you would like for your thank you cards to match the rest of your set, Basic Invite has those too, and although they won’t relieve you of the task of writing all of those thank yous, you won’t have to worry about how they look! You know they will fit perfectly in with your all-around design plan.

Wedding Invitation + Day-Of Paper Goods Timeline
October 14, 2015

Good morning, my Washington DC area wedding lovelies! We have loads of practical wedding planning advice for you, so grab a pencil and some paper because you’ll want to take notes, quite literally! Today, we are talking about wedding invitations, save-the-date cards, and all of those little pretties that you’ll need for the day of your wedding like ceremony programs and escort cards. When should you order your wedding stationery? What about the menu cards? When you should send out the wedding invitations to your guests? How many invitations should you order? All of the wedding paper goods questions are are answered by local Baltimore-based wedding stationery designer Madeline, owner of mlc designs. Madeline is walking us through the wedding stationery and day-of-the-wedding materials timelines as well as providing some insider tips and advice that only a wedding professional would know! Take it away, Madeline…

The wedding invitation is the first glimpse of your wedding that your guests will receive. Consider it a sneak preview that will set the stage for what they can expect on your big day. How formal or coordinated you want to get with your wedding invitation is up to you. This is our handy guide that will help you to sort through the basics of your printed wedding design items.

Custom or DIY?

Once your overall wedding budget it set, it’s time to decide if you’ll be working with a designer for custom wedding invites or purchasing a pre-made invitation design. Working with a custom invitation designer will allow you to create a completely one-of-a-kind wedding invite, and will ensure the printed elements for your wedding will all complement each other perfectly. If custom designed invites are what you’re looking for, contact a stationery designer about 6-12 months prior to the wedding – giving you plenty of time to meet and start the creative process. If you want to order a pre-made design from an online shop, there is certainly more flexibility on time. You may want to consider ordering up 6 months out from your wedding. Remember, you will want to mail your invitations 6-8 weeks from your wedding, so you don’t want to count that time in your planning.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to think outside the box for a custom wedding invitation concept. A good stationery designer can use anything as a jumping off point: the lace of your dress, your city’s skyline, a color palette or from your favorite dress, you and your partner’s mutual love of Star Wars, you name it!

Save-the-Date

Save-the-date mailings have become quite standard in wedding planning these days. While they are not absolutely necessary, they are definitely a must for destination weddings or weddings that will be celebrated over a holiday weekend. A save-the-date invitation should include your names, date, location, event website and hotel info only. You can keep it fun and simple just what people will need to ˜save the date.’ Do not include your wedding registry details on your save-the-date – that’s what your wedding website is a great place for. Save-the-dates are typically mailed at least 6 months out from your wedding, or 8-12 months for destination or holiday weddings. As a custom stationery designer, I like to pick out my client’s wedding invitations first, so we can see what the main event will feel like then we go back and decide if we want a complimenting design for the save-the-date, or if we want something fun and different for the save-the-dates.

Tip: Do you want to feature a cute photo of the two of you on your save-the-date mailing? Factor in extra time to schedule a photography session and for you to pick out your favorites. Your wedding engagement photo session is a great option for these types of photos as long as you plan far enough in advance. Also, don’t forget to coordinate your photo session attire. We’ve had couples that want to use their wedding colors in the design and then they are wearing colors in their photos that don’t match at all of their wedding palette.

Invitations

Showtime! After the wedding invites have been printed and you’ve spent at least one day dreamily ogling your gorgeous pieces, it’s time to get these babies in the mail to your wedding guests. Traditionally, the wedding invitation is mailed 6-8 weeks before the big day, 8-12 weeks for destination or holiday weddings. Your RSVP date should be 3-4 weeks before the event – this will give your wedding caterer enough time for a firm headcount as well as you (or your designer) time to prep any day-of-the wedding details, such as ceremony programs and escort cards. If you’ll be having a calligrapher professionally address the outer envelopes of your wedding invitation suite, don’t forget to find out their deadline for the mailing list and make sure that you factor in time for their work. Also, there are some custom wedding invitation designers (like myself!) who offer the wedding guest addressing and mailing services for you just think of all of those hours stuffing and licking wedding invitation envelopes that you could use to Google for honeymoon destinations (That’s way more fun!).

Tip: Order 10-12 extra wedding invitations for keepsakes and for last minute changes or address errors. Also, before you send out your wedding invitations, consider adding a little number in pencil on the back of the RSVP card. You will be surprised how many of your wedding guests will return their RSVP card with out a name! Keep track of the numbers in your guest list file. You also want to make sure you take your sample wedding invitation suite to the Post Office to confirm the weight and cost of mailing your invitations.

Day-Of-The-Wedding Details

Ceremony programs and wedding menus and escort cards, oh my! While all of these items that will be used on the day of your wedding will have one clear cut due date, you’ll want to factor in time for assembly and production of elements that require wedding guests’ names and other variables. For example, you won’t have names for your escort cards until the wedding invitation RSVP’s are in. Weaving a cohesive theme throughout these components will really make your event shine in the eyes of your wedding guests. Here are some other ideas to consider getting printed for the day of your wedding: Custom welcome bags to greet your guests in their hotel rooms, signage for your caterer or bartenders, tags for your wedding favors, cocktail napkins, and a unique idea for a wedding guestbook. If your wedding is in an outdoor or remote locale, consider well-placed signage to help point your guests in the right direction such as from the parking lot or to the restrooms. The possibilities really are endless on your wedding day! But like all wedding decisions, don’t let the possibilities overwhelm you! Decide what’s most important to you and your partner and go from there.

Tip: Don’t forgot to have your wedding photographer capture all of these day-of-the-wedding details for you, Unfortunately, on the wedding day you may not get a chance to see them all! If your photographer knows what details and items are available ahead of time, they can plan accordingly and look out for these special items. If possible, you might want to set aside the day of the wedding materials, such as a program for you to save and also for your photographer to photograph. Lastly, make sure your photographer knows about any end of the night wedding elements that are important to you, such as a “just married” sign on your get-away car. You’ll want to make sure that your photographer sticks around until the end of the night and knows to take those photographs – this will ensure the photographer stays to the end to capture!

Thank You Notes

You might think that thank you notes for your wedding are something you don’t need to think about until after you get back from the honeymoon. Not so fast! Do yourself a favor and order your wedding gift thank you notes a couple of months before your wedding or along with all of your day-of-the wedding details. You’ll likely get some wedding gifts sent to you well before your big day (especially around bridal shower time!) and it’s absolutely okay to send a prompt thank you note when the wedding gift arrives, even if your wedding hasn’t happened yet. You’ll thank yourself later for this head start on thank you note writing. If you work with a wedding stationery designer, you can match your thank you notes to the look of your wedding invitations or even use a cute photo from the wedding day! (What about holding up a bunting or banner that says “thank you” and then having it made into thank you cards?) If you go with notecards that match your wedding stationery, I always suggest using your names or initials rather than a general “thank you.” Also, consider ordering extra cards – won’t it be nice to have personalized stationery on-hand to use when giving a gift or writing a note to someone after your wedding?

Tip: Contrary to popular belief, married couples do not have a year after the wedding to send thank you notes for gifts received. According to etiquette expert Emily Post, thank you notes should be sent within three months of receiving the wedding gift. Plus, won’t it feel good to get them off your plate and enjoy the honeymoon phase without more wedding details?

Real Washington DC Wedding Invitations: Kate + Brian
January 22, 2014

You know we love celebrating this great city of Washington, DC and we love it even more when brides and grooms celebrate the city in their wedding details. Kate and Brian’s real wedding invitation suite definitely celebrates our nation’s capital and this city they feel in love in! You might remember Kate and Brian from their elegant country wedding in Washington, DC from a few months ago. If not, you can see their wedding ceremony here and their wedding reception here. Once you see their wedding and read their story, their wedding invitation suite will make sense! I was so in awe of their paper goods that I asked to feature them all on their own. Alisandra Photography was kind enough to shoot a few extra photos for us and Kate is giving us the backstory and their DC love story that inspired their invitations.

Washington-dc-inspired-wedding-invitations-Alisandra Photography

From Kate: We wanted personal, so we went straight to some of the people who know us best! The save the dates were created by one of Bryan’s groomsmen, Joshua Mikel. We really wanted something unique and personal and I did not want to use engagement photos. I gave him the date and location information, and a couple things that I wanted included — our dog, Ebbitt (named after the Old Ebbitt Grill!), the Georgetown skyline rising above the Key Bridge, and The Tombs sign. Beyond that, I gave him full creative liscence and this is what he came up with! It was one of my favorite parts of our wedding details.

More from Kate:  The invitations were designed and developed by my cousin, Erinn Dulin and her friend, Jose Renteria. I wanted the chalkboard theme to carry through the wedding a bit. Erinn also designed the seating charts and the menus for the tables. (You can see those here.) I gave her very limited guidance. I knew I wanted the chalkboard theme and also that I didn’t want them to be traditional and formal. The font is a mixture of type font and actual handwriting, which Jose did.
