Wedding Floral Needs, Options and Advice
October 17, 2014

Its been a big wedding flower crash course here in DMV this wee! But, before we leave you for the weekend, let’s do one more advice post for wedding floral week here on United With Love. (Rememeber, very shortly we’ll be back with even more wedding floral advice for all of our couples planning a wedding in the Washington DC area. We have so much great advice from the best wedding florists in DC, Maryland and Virginia, that I couldn’t just leave it at one week! So, stay tuned because I’m planning a whole second week.)

For today, let’s talk about specific floral needs, quantities, locations and more. If you know what you need, and what the options are when it comes to flowers, then you can plan and budget a little bit better. There are so many choices of where and who to adorn with flowers on your wedding day, so I asked our expert wedding floral designers in the Washington DC area what they recommend to their clients. Where do they typically see floral arrangements being placed? And, most importantly, where should brides and grooms invest their floral dollars, as in what will have the biggest impact? Here is what they had to say¦

This is a hard question, because weddings are truly unique nowadays. We are seeing a lot of cocktail receptions, which don’t require the usual escort table or reception centerpieces. Not every wedding has a traditional wedding party, so even bridesmaids’ bouquets are not guaranteed. he important piece is to identify what needs decor and go from there. – Liza, owner of Studio DBI

You want to invest your money in what will be in all your photos (the bouquets), and where guests spend the most time (the reception). If it’s in your budget, it’s worth it to splurge on a dramatic escort table piece, as this is the first thing your guests see at the reception and can set the tone.  Gerry and Rebecca, owners of Petal’s Edge Floral Design

Typically, you start with the bridal party, which usually includes, the bride, bridesmaids, groom, groomsmen, parents, grandparents, ushers, ring bearer and flower girl. We have seen a great deal of ˜grooms women’ and ˜brides men,, which is a female on the grooms side or a male on the brides side. You may want to consider flowers for the hair and other special people, such as readers, the officiant or family members you want to recognize. The ceremony and reception items will of course depend greatly on the location, but you will want arrangements at the altar, on the huppah, or the space you will be designating to say ˜I do,’ flowers down the aisle, petals, a runner, unity candle, presentation bouquets or flowers for Mary in Catholic weddings or for in memory of a family member, wreaths or swags for the front doors. The reception can be as simple as candles on the table up to a garland of flowers down the table and floral chandeliers hanging above. You should always have something on the escort card table, possibly the guest book table, an entry table, buffet stations, fireplace mantels, cake flowers, a toss bouquet, an arrangement for the ladies room, the list can go on and on depending on the space, the budget and your willingness to get creative.  Shelly, owner of B Floral and Event Design

Depending on how important flowers are to the couple and their budget, I recommend the following: bridal bouquet, boutonnieres, bridesmaid bouquets, ceremony flowers, centerpieces, escort card table. Additional floral design items might include, personal flowers for family or children, bar arrangements, cocktail table arrangements, bride and groom chair flowers.   Alicia, owner of Alicia Jayne Florals

Personal flowers for the entire wedding party, and most importantly inspirational altar pieces and/or backdrops. Your guests are seated waiting to see you, but until that time, use your backdrop or altar pieces to evoke emotion – It’s your day, and your stage-make it great!  Jennifer, owner of J. Morris Flowers

white-bridal-bouquet-Alicia-Jayne-Florals-Birds-of-a-Feather-Photography

Photo Credit:Birds of a Feather Photography; Floral Design: Alicia Jayne Florals

These are the main areas we touch on and there are countless more depending on where your venues are: Bridal bouquet (a must!); attendants bouquets; flower girl accoutrements, i.e. pomander, hair wreath; groom’s boutonniere; groomsmen boutonnieres; any other personal florals for mothers, fathers, special people to recognize; nuptials decor to include framing area for couple (This may include draping, arch, chuppah, pedestals with floral, or mandap.); chair/pew decor; entry area; placecard/escort table; cocktail tables; reception; centerpieces; cake/dessert table; and toss bouquet   Christi, president of Bergerons Flowers

Here are the basic pieces that we start out with: Bouquets for brides/bridesmaids; corsages for moms/readers/grandmothers and some children; baskets/wreaths/pomanders for flower girls; boutonnieres for fathers/grandfathers/groomsmen/brothers/readers/etc.; ceremony decor; aisle decor; cocktail hour tables; escort card table; mantels; door wreaths; centerpieces; cake flowers; and buffet arrangements. Other special items would be bar and bathroom flowers, stairway railings and florals for pathways/arches.  Katie, owner of Elegance & Simplicity

Bouquet, and boutonnieres are the most photographed, noticed and enjoyed. Ceremony flowers are the least important due to the fact that guests are so enthralled with the couple and wedding party, so that this is the first place to cut back. The ceremony is also the shortest period of time during the entire event. The cutbacks can be made unless the clients are having a Jewish ceremony, which would require a chuppah. Chuppahs are a very high end design item. Centerpieces are the next most important design element, as guests will be staring at these for many hours. The centerpieces will greatly impact your photographs. You can skip the place card, cake, mantels and guest book, if budget is of concern. Holly, owner of Holly Chapple Flowers

“In addition to the typical requests (bouquet, bridesmaids, ceremony, reception, escort card tables etc,), cake flowers are a popular request. Also, if the budget permits aisle decor for the church are a nice element. – Lisa, owner of Petals and Promises

Wedding Floral Meeting: Who and What to Bring?
October 15, 2014

Welcome back to wedding flower week! We are just getting started, but hopefully you are learning lots from our wedding floral design experts in the Washington DC area. I know that I am! As I said, we haven’t done much in the way of wedding flower advice, other than wedding flowers in the DC area by season, so I’m personally really excited to go through this wedding floral design process with you. We giving you everything you need to know about having the gorgeous blooms you crave for you wedding! Next up, we are discussing what you should bring to your wedding floral meeting. (Hint, it involves some time on Pinterest, which I doubt will be a problem!) And, not just what should you bring, but who should you bring? Maybe you’ve heard to not bring a lot of people, but why?? We talked to the best wedding florists in DC, MD and VA and got their advice….

From Michelle and David’s wedding in DC

In terms of who you bring, that can be tricky. The one person who should be there is the person who will make the decisions regarding the decor. This can be one member of the couple, both together, maybe even someone else like a mother. One mistake we see people make is to bring more people than they really want the opinions of! A real estate show we saw said it best people bring their friends and family to support them, but the friends and family see their role as protecting them. This can make for a little contentious of a situation as you may hear criticism you weren’t prepared for!  Gerry and Rebecca, owners of Petal’s Edge Floral Design

“Share you Pinterest page and bring along a trusted friend or family member.” – Lisa, owner of Petals and Promises

“As a floral and event designer, my desire is to meet with the bride and the person responsible for payment. The ultimate goal is to listen to the couple’s vision of their wedding and together create an entire environment, including flowers and many other elements.” – Janice, owner of Serendipity Bridal & Events

Bring color swatches, mood boards, Pinterest boards and inspirational images with you to the meeting, so the designer can get a feel for what you want on your wedding day. Having your partner join you is always helpful if they are interested in the floral design aspect of the wedding as well as your event planner. Last, but certainly not least, may be the person footing the bill If parents are involved in covering the cost of the flowers and they would like to know what they are paying for, then it is always a good idea to invite them to the consultation. They can decide to join you or not, but at least you’ve included them.  Alicia, owner of Alicia Jayne Florals

To the meeting, bring any inspiration you might have (Pinterest board, fabric swatches, images of other decor pieces, invitations, etc). As with any other vendor meetings, limit the number of people you bring with you. Flowers and decor are not for everyone, so bring someone who is excited about the creative process.  Liza, owner of Studio DBI

pink-blue-nautical-wedding-flowers-Serendipity-Bridal-and-Events

Floral Design: Serendipity Bridal & Events

You should bring any photos or Pinterest boards (We LOVE those!), special items that you want included (i.e. family heirlooms) are perfect for us to see and get a vision of who you are as the special couple! Bringing one or two people with you is fantastic. But, bringing a posse is overwhelming for the couple and is a sure way to get information overload and bring confusion to your decision-making process. Definitely bring those who want to be there though! Someone that isn’t interested in the decor can keep you from enjoying the time where you get to share your excitement with us. We want you to enjoy the consultation, because it’s fun and rewarding and we have set aside that time to help you.  Christi, president of Bergerons Flowers

You should bring anyone that is supportive of YOUR ideas! The person should give an honest opinion, but respect the fact that you are the bride and/or groom and you hold the the most important opinion.  Shelly, owner of B Floral and Event Design

Typically, the bride and/or groom comes to the consultation alone, but is sometimes accompanied by the partner or mother of the bride/groom that has a particular interest in the overall wedding look. It’s all about who the bride/groom is comfortable with and who they want to allow help make the very important decisions of the day. – Holly, owner of Holly Chapple Flowers

Try not to bring too many people, it only makes the process that much more difficult when there are too many opinions. It  is best to just bring yourself and your fiance’/parent/planner, if that. Too many cooks spoil the pot!  Jennifer, owner of J. Morris Flowers

Send the florist your Pinterest page before meeting and bring a layout of your wedding reception space if the florist has not been there before. Don’t bring an entourage of people with a lot of opinions to the meeting. This will not help you make decisions. We normally recommend that you come with the least amount of people – you, your fiance and anyone else who might be part of the funding of the wedding flowers (i.e. Mom or dad).  Katie, owner of Elegance & Simplicity

How to Find Your Wedding Floral Style?
October 13, 2014

Welcome to the first post in what I’m calling wedding floral week here on United With Love. You know that I love giving practical wedding planning advice to help couples in the Washington DC area plan their local weddings, and, well, flowers is just one of those topics that we haven’t gotten too deep into…yet. (We have done wedding flowers in the DMV by season.) So, now is the time! I asked the top wedding florists in DC, MD and VA to lend their expertise, and we are going to be dishing out all week week long and then some! Flowers are gorgeous,  as we all know, and they have the magic to transform any wedding into a stunning affair. But, most of us aren’t florists and we have no idea where to start. Flowers can prove to be a costly wedding mistake, if you don’t do your research and team up with the right florist. I can’t wait to help you learn a little bit more about wedding planning and flowers. I know I’m going to be learning right along with you!

First up in the advice category, we are going to talk about wedding flowers and your style. Specifically, how can you find your wedding floral style? You’ve decided that you’d like flowers at your wedding, but what kinds, what types?! Where should you begin? Your Pinterest board is exploding with ideas and floral arrangements that you love, but you just don’t know where to start!? I went right to the experts and this is what the best wedding floral designers in the Washington DC area had to say about find a wedding floral style that works for you¦

citrus-wedding-ceremony-decor-Studio-DBI

Floral Design: Studio DBI

The best way to find your wedding floral style is to start looking at Pinterest and seeing styles that you like. Then narrow it down to colors and then to the time of year. Normally, start with a general pot of ideas you like, then add in your bridesmaids dresses, types of food, flowers you like and flowers you don’t like and then your budget. After that, your florist can help you determine the right style. This will only happen with an experienced floral designer that has worked in the space you are in. – Katie, owner of Elegance & Simplicity

One of the first questions that I ask is what is the style of the overall wedding and what atmosphere is the couple trying to create. Also, a couple’s attire usually does a good job of dictating the design direction. If their Pinterest boards all over the place, it usually has some underlying connections and it takes a trained eye to spot it. – Liza, owner of Studio DBI

There is no wrong style as long as you are choosing blooms you love in colors that will make your happy! Wedding magazines and Pinterest make choosing flowers and styles to show your designer quick and easy. Just be sure to show your floral designer clear photos within a theme, and keep the amount of photos anywhere between five to 10. A good designer will understand and pull together a custom look. – Jennifer, owner of J. Morris Flowers

The best tip to figuring out your wedding style is to look in your closet and your home. What colors do you favor? Do you like modern elements? Things that are classic? A blend of the two? – Gerry and Rebecca, owners of Petal’s Edge Floral Design

beach-wedding-flowers-Alicia-Jayne-Florals

Generally, after pouring over their images, I start to see a pattern of similar elements and we work to hone in on what those elements are to refine the style. I also like to give the couple a few options that will still stay within their style, but will allow our creativity to show through. No one wants a cookie-cutter wedding just like everyone else. I love to still add our touches to each design. – Christi, president of Bergerons Flowers

Pin pointing a couple’s style can be determined by allowing them to talk about their personal likes. Colors, seasons, the feeling and style of their wedding day whether it be romantic, chic, modern, country, southern, preppy, etc. – Janice, owner of Serendipity Bridal & Events

From years of experience, I can almost always find a common thread. For example, a particular flower or greenery will be consistently present in a client’s inspiration board or I will see a shape and a style from looking at a couple’s board. Clients that pull orchids, callas, and exotic flowers are typically more clean and contemporary. Clients that like wispy airy elements tend towards a more romantic vibe. – Holly, owner of Holly Chapple Flowers

Most of my clients have a Pinterest board or pictures of various wedding related items. Usually, there is a pattern or a common flower throughout the pictures and we build the designs off of that. I always suggest using Pinterest and just pinning what you like without thinking too much about what will go together and what will match. There will usually be a pattern and then your floral designer can help you pull together a cohesive design. – Shelly, owner of B Floral and Event Design

bright-colorful-bridal-bouquet-Elegance-and-Simplicity

Photo Credit: Katarina Price Photography: Floral Design: Elegance & Simplicity

I always try to get an idea of the couple’s background, how they met, where they live, what types of activities they are into and why they chose their wedding venue. This helps me to determine what kind of wedding day they hope to share with their friends and family, which then helps me to determine what floral designs would best suit them. For example, if the couple has selected a formal, high-end hotel as their venue yet all of their Pinterest and inspiration images include burlap, mason jars and a rustic country look, then I would try to bring them back to why it was they selected the formal hotel venue. There must have been something about the space that they were drawn to and then I would make suggestions for containers and designs that would compliment that space, as opposed to the rustic decor that would fit better in a barn or outdoor setting. Sometimes couples need some direction, as most have never even thought about flowers for an event until they begin planning their wedding and they are looking for help and guidance to make their day beautiful and memorable. – Alicia, owner of Alicia Jayne Florals

Inspired by Floral Cotton
May 24, 2012

Today we’ve found wedding inspiration in a not-so traditional floral element, cotton! Cotton is a great option to spice up your bouquet, boutonnieres and centerpieces – and it’s sure to have your guests talking. (You might remember this inspiration post that we did on ways to incorporate raw cotton into your wedding!)

We are lucky here in the DC area because we have a local company Floral Cotton, based in Maryland, that can help you add this natural product to your wedding. Florists, Gerry and Rebecca, at Petal’s Edge recently worked with material from Floral Cotton and Michelle Lindsay to brainstorm some modern and unique ideas and ways to use cotton at a wedding.

cotton-wedding-centerpieces

From Petal’s Edge: When you think of floral arrangements, cotton is likely not the first thing that comes to mind. Similar to other organic, but non-floral elements, that have become popular fruit, seed pods, succulents and berries to name a few cotton can add an unusual texture and style to floral arrangements.

cotton-and-green-wedding-flowers cotton-burr-wreath

There are several reasons cotton makes a great element for use in floral design, even outside of its luscious texture. Although it is primarily harvested in September and October, it is available throughout the year, because it is essentially a dried product that does not require refrigeration. Unlike other floral design products, while cotton is grown in other countries, it is unlikely to be imported in floral form making it a truly American product.

cotton-bouquet-for-weddings

cotton-bridal-bouquet

Cotton is delicate, which lends a light, ethereal look in a floral arrangement, but it is also sturdy. An all-cotton bridal bouquet, for example, is immediately preserved. Cotton is so versatile that it can be paired with both fresh, dried or silk flowers, and can play both center stage and supporting roles in designs.

So luscious and dreamy! I hope that you are inspired by all the different ways to use cotton at your wedding. Keep in mind, that cotton is also a great (and affordable option) for winter weddings when fresh flowers are the hardest to come by.

Inspiration: Non-Floral Boutonnieres
April 14, 2011

Last week, we brought you an entire color spectrum of beautiful floral boutonnieres.  I like to leave the flowers to the pros, but sometimes boutonnieres can be the perfect DIY element.  Boutonnieres, that is, that aren’t floral but rather fabric, paper, feathers or virtually any other material you can imagine!  DIY not your style?  The pros are pretty good at these non-traditional, awesome accessories too!
