Surprise Proposal at Bluemont Vineyards
June 7, 2019

Katie originally thought that she was taking part in a photo session that her boyfriend, Michael, had “won”, but little did she know that it was a photo shoot of her proposal! The day before this lovely couple’s one year and seven month anniversary, Michael made Katie the happiest girl in the world when he asked for her hand in marriage. Michael arranged a perfect wedding proposal at Bluemont Vineyard. He spent months planning and preparing a moment that he knew would live on forever in both of their hearts and minds.

Michael flawlessly assembled an amazing cover story that Katie totally bought. To set the scene of the surprise, he told Katie that he won his company’s annual March Madness tournament bracket pool. Every year they give out extravagant gifts, like spa days, an Xbox, or Apple Watches. When Michael told her that he had won a photo session, it did not seem too far-fetched for Katie.

After some forged emails and conversations, Katie was 100% on board with the cover story of a photo shoot. Michael went on to meticulously plan the shoot to include a surprise marriage proposal. He discussed how they overall execution with the couple’s photographer KPC and Co.  On the day of the proposal, Katie didn’t think anything of it when she was asked to face the opposite direction, count to three, and turn around. Katie was so taken surprised and shocked to see Michael down on one knee, that she didn’t even hear a word of the proposal speech Michael had memorized for her. After the proposal, Michael had one more surprise up his sleeve. He slipped their families into Bluemont’s tasting room and surprised her with a quaint celebration.

From Katie: Michael told me he had won his company March madness bracket and the prizes to choose from were an Apple Watch, Xbox or a two hour professional photography shoot. He knew (obviously) I would try to persuade him into the photo shoot which he finally agreed to after a couple of days of nagging! We agreed to do it at Bluemont Vineyard where we had our first date. We started taking pictures and all was going as normal. At one point, our photographer Lori asked me to turn and look towards the grapevines as she wanted to capture Michael walking up behind me and wrapping his arms around me. Once Michael had come up behind me she said “okay Katie, turn around and saying something funny to make him laugh!” I turned around and there was the love of my life, on one knee with the most unbelievably brilliant ring I’d ever seen. I was completely full of emotion and joy as this is the moment I’ve dreamt of since I was a little girl. He had this beautiful speech he was trying to say but I couldn’t help but cut him off and say “YES!!!” before immediately diving down to hug him. After we spent a few minutes relishing in the moment, we agreed to go meet the photographer inside the main winery to take pictures of the ring. I walked up the stairs to the main floor, turned the corner and heard “CONGRATULATIONS!” Again, to my complete shock and surprise, was both Michael and I’s families with champagne in hand and a beautifully decorated area complete with signs, balloons, food and cake. When I say this day was the most special and surreal moment in my life, it’s the truth. I couldn’t have imagined a better way to begin my life with my soulmate.

From Michael: Planning a proposal should be fun, exciting, meaningful and a little nerve-wracking (in a good way). That is, unless you want to push the envelope, and orchestrate a complex story line involving multiple parties, weeks of planning and hundreds of details that need to be executed flawlessly. In that case, planning a proposal should make you feel like Danny Ocean from Oceans 11, planning the most unforgettable moment instead of the ultimate casino heist. The most special person in your life deserves to feel just how special they are to you; so the proposal was the perfect time for me to do just that.

I tricked her into thinking I won my companies March Madness Tournament; which had a few awesome prizes to choose from such as a private photoshoot. I created a series of fake emails, fake companies and A LOT of fake golf outings to help support the story line and buy myself time to execute the plan. I had already chosen the date, time and location but made sure to let her “choose” as we continued through the process and the fake emails kept pouring in. I worked closely with the photographer, who deserves an Oscar for her performance, and the special events coordinator to map out every single detail of the visit. I even brought out the colored pencils and drew pictures, maps and decoration design layouts to get everyone on the same page. Most importantly, I was able to get both of our families to come celebrate with us as a second surprise once we walked into the winery to wrap things up with the photographer.

The effort, stress and countless hours spent planning and coordinating the moment I was finally going to ask my best friend to marry me was worth every single piece of it; a million times over. Seeing the love of my life’s eyes light up as I was down on one knee, and her pure state of shock, was honestly the most rewarding experience of my life.

Homespun Bluemont Vineyard Wedding
July 19, 2017

Today’s Bluemont Vineyard Wedding is DIY done right! The bride, friends, or family crafted almost every detail. Every piece of Tiara and Mark’s day was touched with love; you can tell it was a team effort to bring this beautiful day together. Tiara wore the same garter as her mom did  on her wedding day. Her aunt made it! Her mother utilized her talents as a florist to contribute all of the flowers. They’re so pretty and go perfectly with the aesthetic of Bluemont Vineyard.

Throughout Tiara and Mark’s relationship they have traveled many miles to see and be with each other because Mark is stationed in Italy for his job in the Navy. All of the guests were given pieces of paper to make paper airplanes to toss during their recessional after their I Dos. This was such a fun and unique way to represent all the miles of their relationship! The very last detail that we wanted to share from this homespun wedding were the boxes. Both of their mothers each placed a note and a bottle of wine in a box to be opened on their one year and three year anniversary. Finally, the couple placed their own bottle and notes for their 5 year anniversary! How adorable! Thank you to Photography by Marirosa for sharing this wedding with us today.

Modern Orange Wedding at Bluemont Vineyard (Part 2): Leah + Evan
March 21, 2012

It’s time to share the modern celebration that followed Leah and Evan’s idyllic ceremony from Kristen Gardner Photography. They recruited their talented family to help with all the little details and incorporated places they’ve traveled to together as well as tributes to their vineyard location throughout their fun vibrant reception!

It is hard to pick just one detail from the day but, I will say that the final look of our reception venue really took our breaths away. It was such a special feeling to see how our vision came together so perfectly for us.

Our table names were personalized by the names being based on places Evan and I have traveled to. Our families were extremely helpful and crafty in many of the details. My aunt made all of the table and place card holders, table runners, and napkin rings by hand. My mother in law handmade the wine cork wreaths, flower pomanders and welcome bags.

Leah’s advice to other DC-area couples:

Always ask your venue what vendors they recommend and have had good, positive experiences with in the past. We couldn’t have asked for any better from all of our vendors. Meet as often as you can with your vendors keep in contact, whether by email or phone, confirming the confirmed. You don’t have to spend a fortune – make sure to tell your vendors your budget and how they can get you as close to what you want within it.

Modern Orange Wedding at Bluemont Vineyard (Part 1): Leah + Evan
March 21, 2012

It may have felt like summer in DC lately, but we’re fast forwarding to fall today. Leah and Evan picked a color palette of orange and green for their Bluemont Vineyard wedding to honor the season, and the unbelievable view they had of it in action from their ceremony site. Their fresh and modern details popped against the rustic backdrop of Virginia wine country and Kristen Gardner was there to capture it all! And don’t miss their reception, right here, too!

From Leah: Our wedding style was modern, clean elegance in a rustic setting. We wanted our wedding to have formal touches but at the same time be very comfortable and casual. Evan and I met and went to college in the NC mountains which is where we originally wanted to get married before moving to NOVA. When we visited Bluemont Vineyard for the first time we were automatically reminded of all of our memories in NC and knew that this would be the perfect place for us to get married. Besides me always liking bright colors, we chose orange and green to highlight the beginning of fall and knew they would accompany nicely with the venue.

Rustic Wedding at Bluemont Vineyard in Virginia: Krista + Jonathan
April 18, 2011

You guys, I’m kind of in love with today’s featured Virginia wedding.  The bride, Krista, worked with Tabitha from Roberts and Company Events to bring her wedding vision to reality all while her military groom was deployed in Iraq!  Krista and Tabitha considered every detail for this fall vineyard wedding, from the happy yellow, teal, and gray color palette to the beautiful rustic details throughout the ceremony and reception.  Cassidy Duhon captured the stunning images, from the lovely outdoor ceremony to a fun s’mores bar at the reception!

Rustic-Virginia-Vineyard-Wedding-Bluemont-Vineyard

From Tabitha: Krista and Jonathan were married on November 20, 2010 at Bluemont Vineyard in Virginia.  Jonathan was recently deployed in Iraq and helped Krista with planning the wedding via Skype and quick phone calls when they were able to actually speak.  Their color palette was gray, yellow and turqouise and they wanted a rustic homemade feeling.  They wanted a small party of 80 guests with a mid day reception and a very light feel.  We put a lot of personal touches into the wedding such as striped straws, made games for the kids, and had an outdoor “photobooth” with props.  Krista planned surprises for guests and her husband to be like a cigar bar for the men and a smores bar at the end of the night for the guests.

From Krista: We both really wanted something that just fit “us” – nothing too fancy or too traditional.  I saw a picture of a gray and yellow bridal party a while ago and really loved it, but I also really love teal.  With a November wedding date, yellow dresses (though so cute) were out of the picture, so we had gray bridesmaid dresses, gray suits for the guys, teal ties, and then yellow, teal, and gray touches throughout the reception.  We wanted something that felt like it just fit, something relaxed yet dressy, laid back but fun.  I sent Tabitha, our planner, so many photos I had found for inspiration, and she did an amazing job turning the inspiration photos into an awesome look and feel for the reception 🙂

Our wedding was at a vineyard and we really wanted to incorporate that somehow we used empty wine barrels in the reception area (including one for the cake), and we had a wine ceremony to incorporate our parents (and wine) into the ceremony.  For our table numbers, we had pictures of us holding up that many fingers in photos from Hawaii. (Jonathan just got back from a year-long deployment to Iraq a few months before the wedding, and he had vacation time when he returned but not around the wedding, so we kind of had a pre-wedding honeymoon in Hawaii.)  We had a table with pictures of my grandparents’ wedding they’re now happily married for over 60 years!  We also had two memorial candles made for close family members (on both sides) that have passed away over the last few years.

Our main priority was to have a wedding that just felt like us, and for everyone to have fun!  I really loved the idea of a photo booth, and it was one of the most fun parts of the wedding even if it was a little splurge we have awesome pictures of friends and family with ridiculous accessories!

I also really like surprises so we had a few surprises built into the day from little gifts to our parents, to a surprise cigar bar for the groom, to an amazing smores bar.  In planning and budgeting, the priorities were the venue, food, and photographer we really wanted a unique venue that felt right, and a photographer who could capture all the feelings, moments, and more.  I really loved the idea of a photo booth, and am so glad we did it our guests had so much fun with it.  We also really wanted a delicious cake and really good food.  Later in the planning I decided to kind of splurge and get makeup and hair done, and I’m so glad I did.

Krista was also kind enough to pass along some really great advice for other couples getting married in the Washington, DC area:

Find vendors you really trust and enjoy working with.  Accept that there are going to be some struggles/issues in the planning from guest list drama to other tiny little things that seem huge at the moment but months after the wedding you’ll have trouble remembering those once huge problems.  We tried to DIY as much as we could and our planner helped keep us close to the budget.  Focus on the things that are important to you, not family or friends or tradition; accept that you can’t make everyone happy, but it’s your wedding and you’re the one who is going to remember most of the details.  On venues, I had this huge list of maybe 30 venues, and I visited maybe 20 of them…one will feel right.  Ok, maybe two will feel right.  But one will just seem to fit better, and then you can build on the venue.  When friends and family give advice, listen, but don’t feel the need to actually do everything they say they’ll understand in the end!

From Erin: When we were planning our wedding, we knew that we wanted it to be a fun and care free. We wanted to balance a timeless elegant feel befitting a wedding with the openhearted love and joy that Dan and I feel when we are together. We had to make decisions about where we wanted to spend our money and where we wanted to DIY. We chose to splurge on food and drink.

Rustic Vineyard Wedding Dessert Table

In addition to the yummy wedding cake, we also had a dessert table filled with desserts baked by our family in honor of our Italian heritage including three recipes passed down from departed loved ones Italian Sesame Cookies for my Great-Grandmother, Pizzelle Cookies for Dan’s Grandmother, and Cannoli for my Grandmother & Grandfather. Fittingly, we also used our dessert table to display wedding photos of our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents.

Each place setting had a burlap silverware pocket that was sewn by my mother and accented with lace and ribbon that matched the invitations. And the wood chargers used in the center pieces were hand crafted by the Daniel’s father.

Erin’s wedding planning advice for other DC-area couples:

One of the best things about our wedding was the individuality we put into it. Together with our vendors we were able to put together a memorable day unique to us that all our guests seemed to enjoy wholeheartedly. We would encourage any couple planning their wedding to make the day their own. There are lots of traditions, lots of obligations, and lots of feedback whether you want it or not, but in the end, the day is a representation of the bride and groom and should express their love and life together. People left our wedding smiling and saying, “that was so Dan and Erin.” What more could we have wanted?

Rustic Vineyard Wedding Ceremony in Virginia: Erin + Daniel
February 2, 2015

Classic meets casual elegance for Erin and Daniel’s vineyard wedding in Virginia and, let me tell you, it is simply stunning. When you have a crafty couple inspired by the colors and warmth of autumn, you know it’s going to be a good one, folks! Think rich hues of cranberry and an outdoor wedding with an incredible view all beautifully captured by Cynthia Shipp Photography! I love, love, love that they had a Celtic hand fasting ceremony, too! Stop by later this morning for the second half of their rustic affair!

Virginia Vineyard Wedding Cynthia Shipp Photography

From Erin: When we first started dating, we both enjoyed wine tasting and exploring different vineyards in the Northern Virginia Area. It seemed kismet when we looked at Bluemont Vineyard after getting engaged and the only date they had available in October was the day that we met three years prior, October 4. We loved the view and the rustic appeal of the remodeled barn with beautiful overlook of Loudon County. We knew we wanted a rustic, vintage feel, yet still elegant and timeless. We chose a selection of neutral tones (beige, cream, and sage) with a pop of wine to add warmth and depth.

Our favorite memory of the wedding was a rather large one our ceremony! Our ceremony was written with our reverend (who is also my aunt!). Every aspect and word choice was a deliberate representation of our love and the life and bond we are creating.

Rustic Vineyard Wedding Reception in Virginia: Valerie + Jason
April 30, 2014

As the weather starts to warm up here in the Washington DC area, I’m starting to miss the crisp, cool days of autumn (I know, I know we just got through the worst winter ever!), and Valerie and Jason’s vineyard wedding in Virginia just may have triggered those nostalgic feelings! Did you see their outdoor wedding ceremony at the vineyard?? Be sure to check that out first. The crisp colors, captured by Brett Simpson Photography, warm me right up, and I just love the idea of making homemade strawberry jam favors for your guests. (And if you’re planning on making jam favors, be sure to check out our free printable wedding favor jar labels!)

From Valerie: The reception hall was a converted barn on a mountainside overlooking a beautiful valley and vineyard. The decorations incorporated a rustic charm to accentuate the colors of fall and the vineyard we were apart of.

Some of our handmade and personal details included sunglasses on each ceremony seat with tags saying “Don’t be blinded by our love 10.19.13”, 4-ounce jars of strawberry jam at each place setting made by me with tags reading “Jammed packed with Love”, and glow sticks on the dance floor for the guest to enjoy next to a sign which read “You lite up our day now light up our night.”

Our signature drink was a hot or cold apple cider spiked with rum named the “Mason Dixon” due to the fact that the groom’s family was from the north and the bride’s from the south.

Valerie’s wedding planning advice for other DC-area couples:

Take time for yourselves! Your wedding day is all about the two of you as a couple, make sure you get what you want from it, the wedding process can be stressful at times but at the end of the day you are marrying the one you love. Your engagement will fly by no matter how long it is and your wedding day will be over before you know it. Take the time to cherish these moments and enjoy your new life as husband and wife

Rustic Vineyard Wedding Ceremony in Virginia: Valerie + Jason
April 30, 2014

Warm autumn colors are an intrinsic part of today’s Virginia wedding at a beautiful vineyard. The seasonal inspired details are captured by Brett Simpson Photography in a way that just makes you want to cozy up as you scroll through their charming rustic fall fête filled with pops of reds and oranges (and plenty of pumpkins, too!). Valerie and Jason’s romantic, yet relaxed, vision for their beautiful day is just overflowing with love and I’m totally smitten. And as a special treat, we also have their wedding trailer video from Villatoro Productions (Warning: Grab a tissue!) Come back later this morning to see the reception.

By far our favorite memory of the day was our first look among the vines with our bridal party by our sides. We chose to see each other before the ceremony to ease our nerves and to ensure we had plenty of time to get the pictures we wanted.
