Tented President Lincoln’s Cottage Wedding
April 30, 2020

Olivia and Eric hosted their President Lincoln’s Cottage wedding on the venue’s historic grounds known today as the Armed Forces Retirement Home. It was a casual yet elegant affair. It felt like a private home wedding held at this historic venue once was a retreat for the notable president. Olivia wore her grandmother’s veil, and a veil that has been worn by many women in the family. The stunning cathedral length veil with a lace trim was the perfect accessory to her simple yet elegant BHLDN gown. For flowers, Sidra Forman sourced locally grown blooms and created centerpieces from Queen Anne’s Lace as a nod to where the bride grew up on the Eastern Shore. They also chose to infuse the celebration with loved foods they grew up with. Oysters and crab cakes from the shore, barbecue as a nod to where they both went to college in Memphis. And after the ceremony, Eric sabered a bottle of Champagne with a saber that belonged to Olivia’s father. So many wonderfully thoughtful touches and we appreacite Margo of Bright Occasions for sharing them with us today.

Rose Gold National Museum of Women in the Arts Wedding
December 17, 2019

Monica and Steve were married this past May at the National Women in the Art’s Museum. Monica wore a structured Anne Barge gown that is absolutely to die for, and Steve stunned in a classic black tuxedo. The groomsmen attire followed the groom while the bridesmaids sported floor length light grey gowns to compliment. The pair chose not to do a first look, which made the ceremony all that much more special.

The reception, beautifully designed by Margo of Bright Occasions, wowed us! The florals were lush seasonal blooms of mostly white and blush, with touches of grey foliage and greenery. They kept the tables neutral with an ivory striped textured linen, which made the rose gold chargers really pop, and also coordinated well with the rose gold striped invitations. Platinum rimmed glassware and champagne chiavari chairs kept things more fresh and modern with mixed metals. And the petite cake brought in a textural element that went well with the stationery and linens. A highlight was when Steve and his band took the stage for a few songs, while Monica and guests danced and sang along.

Sleek Black and White DC Wedding
November 25, 2019

Amy and Mario were married this summer at the Carnegie Institution for Science, a perfect backdrop for this sleek black and white DC wedding. Amy & Mario met while taking a Chinese proficiency exam at the University of Maryland, and after graduating have been working and living in Asia as teachers (Taiwan while engaged and recently moved to another city in China). Mario and his family are from Taiwan, while Amy is from the DC/Maryland area. Many of the guests traveled abroad for this special day. Washington, DC was such a great city for this couple to get married and welcome their international friends and family.

On the big day, Amy wore an off-the-shoulder Carolina Herrera gown, and Mario a black tuxedo. Their wedding party paired perfectly in black floor length gowns of their choice for the ladies and classic black tuxedos for the men. Their ceremony took place in the beautiful rotunda at Carnegie, set against the large floor to ceiling doors. Décor was kept to simple greenery planters in the four niches surrounding the ceremony space. Reception centerpieces were lush white florals with touches of greenery, romantic tapered candles and black votive candles, adding just the right amount of modern touch to this elegant wedding reception.  Their two tier textured buttercream cake was displayed in front of the double doors overlooking the city during cocktail hour. And to end the night, guests were given delicious local artisan chocolates as favors! Thanks to one of our favorite DC wedding planners, Margo of Bright Occasions, for sharing this classic wedding inspiration with us today.

Modern Meets Rustic Torpedo Factory Wedding
May 29, 2019

Christine and Zak’s summer wedding combined a beautiful color palette of dusty blue, white, green, gray and gold. Favors were copper mugs for Moscow Mules, the couples favorite drink – yum. What a fun way to incorporate a little glimpse into their lives through their wedding favors!  The Torpedo Factory was transformed with cane back chairs and tables were sleek and minimalist. We adore the gray stoneware plates that paired perfectly with gold flatware and greenery heavy centerpieces. Thank you to Bright Occasions for sharing this modern meets rustic Torpedo Factory wedding with us today.

Advice From the Pros: 2019 Wedding Trends
May 14, 2019

Today we’re talking wedding trends! Yearly trends are some of our favorite things to explore over here on United with Love. As we come up on summer weddings in the DMV, we wanted to share some thoughts on the 2019 trends for the upcoming “busy season” from some fantastic DC area wedding planners. Although… if you ask us, the “busy season” is all year round in the wild world of wedding planning! Keep reading for ideas on what you can include on your big day.

What 2019 wedding trends are you most excited for and how can couples include them in their wedding day?

Zaida Gonzalez Photography via Geometric Modern Wedding Inspiration

While pink and gold are going no where, (certainly not in a more stylistically traditional city like DC,) I am seeing alternative metallics like copper and silver, and a move from blush to either peach or dusty rose. I am also seeing richer jewel tones making their way back into the color palettes as an accent option. Natural materials are still very popular: everything from marble and stone to wicker and bamboo. Fabrics look more natural; folks are generally staying away from shiny fabrics like satin. Couples and designers are also looking at ceilings and floors more than before, ensuring that weddings are customized from top to bottom; not just in the middle part of the venue. – Janice, Bellwether Events

One of my favorite wedding trends for 2019 is everything is leaning towards geometric designs. You can incorporate that with different style tables like rectangular, squares and rounds all together… A backdrop for your ceremony made with hexagons or triangles. Or an interesting food display with different shapes. – Katie, Elegance & Simplicity

We are all about the “guest experience” for 2019! This means interactive food stations, creative guest books such as a silhouette artist cuttings that double as favors, and neon light backdrops bringing back the era of photo-booths with Gif-booths! – Tabitha, Roberts & Co Events

I do love that the Pantone color of the year is Coral; a bold happy color and I’m hoping clients will use them throughout their decor and embrace this fresh color. – Vicky, Event Accomplished

Clapp Studios via Bold Colorful Wedding

Creative and fun dessert stations, either in addition or instead of wedding cake. They could be interactive like an ice cream sundae bar or tie-in where a couple grew up like a “Pittsburgh cookie table” I love that vibrant colors are still on trend. Couples can choose to include a more fluid color palette with more of a range and variety of colors that go together vs. a strict 1-3 color scheme. I love that earthy/natural elements will continue to be on trend. There is something so beautiful and fresh with incorporating greenery and botanicals in the wedding design. It works in outdoor weddings as well as in door wedding and bringing the “outside in.” Ratan accents are trendy and could be used as chargers or in furniture rentals. – Margo, Bright Occasions

Why Hire a Wedding Planner?
February 28, 2019

Are you considering hiring a planner for your DC area wedding but are still on the fence? We know it can be a big investment! And when you have so many vendors to hire, it can be difficult to justify another expense. If you’ve read United with Love in the past, you know how important we think wedding planners can be! Not only do they help guide your through a process you’ve probably never been through before but they do so much more. They can lower your stress levels, offer guidance, handle vendors and even save you time and money. And trust us, as wedding planners ourselves, that is not all we do. Don’t believe us? Take it from some of the best DC area wedding planners! Keep reading for their advice on why you should hire a planner.

And if you’re looking for more info on planners, check out our Wedding Planners vs Coordinators vs DIY post to see which is the best fit for you!

Kurstin Roe Photography

In your opinion, what is the most valuable aspect of hiring a wedding planner or coordinator? Why should brides and grooms spend the money?

My clients appreciate two key aspects of working with me: first, saving time during the planning phase, because I’ve planned weddings in DC for 17 years and I have a wide network of contacts. They don’t get lost in analysis paralysis. Second, my clients regularly tell me that they have very little stress, not only during the planning, but also on the wedding day, because they know I have their back. They can turn almost any challenge over to me and I’ll tackle it on their behalf. – Janice, Bellwether Events

Michelle Lindsay Photography via Tented Virginia Home Wedding

Peace of mind. This is one of the biggest days of your life, why should you leave it to chance? Many clients feel like they have planning experience, but they have never planned a wedding and weddings are a special beast altogether. The planner can help you build a vendor team that fits your budget and vision — far better than any team you could assemble via google searches. They are experts at what they do and can help make the process more efficient, less stressful, as well as be there to troubleshoot issues when they inevitably arise. Flowers are beautiful, but they wilt the next day. A band may sound incredible, but it is only for a few hours. A planner invests his or her time in you and advocates for you for months and months and also makes sure you and your family and friends don’t have to lift a finger on the day of the event. Isn’t that worth the investment? – Teresa, Rex & Regina Events

Love Life Images via Intimate Dumbarton House Wedding

A seasoned planner with years of experience has likely seen whatever plans you dreamed up for your big day in real life, and can better help you either bring them to fruition or navigate any issues that might come up and avoid them. Being versed in everything from people management to event execution will make sure that you have support for wedding problems that might be tricky and your “friends and family” don’t have the answers to. – Tabitha, Roberts & Co Events

Elizabeth Fogarty Photography via Chic Ballroom Wedding

Avoiding potential mistakes or missteps. During the planning phase, we can help avoid costly mistakes and avoid making a decision that would result in an uncomfortable situation for your guests experience. – Vicky, Event Accomplished

Jessica Latos Photography via Charming Woodend Sanctuary Wedding

The most valuable aspect for most couples is that typically when a client hires a wedding planner before they hire vendors, planners save them at least the amount of money they spent on the planner themselves by pointing them in the right direction. Hiring the wrong venue or the wrong vendor can set couples back by hundreds or thousands of dollars in each category. Planners help create realistic budgets that show you were you should be spending your money based on a budget designed around typical weddings in the DC area (not what some online budget calculator has with no logistical parameters built in). – Katie, Elegance and Simplicity

Emily Clack Photography via Kate Spade Inspired DAR Wedding

In terms of wedding planning, a good wedding planner can streamline the process and save the couple so much time and money. And if a couple is decided to plan the wedding without a planner, I would still recommend a coordinator. At the end of the day, a coordinator will take over the event management and that allows the couple to enjoy their day. Which in my opinion, is truly priceless. – Margo,  Bright Occasions

As you can see, hiring a wedding planner can truly help the whole wedding process stress free and smooth. Stay tuned for monthly installments of more planning tips, tricks, and past experiences from our amazing United with Love wedding vendor family! Happy planning everyone!

First Date Inspired Engagement Session
February 22, 2019

For today’s engagement photos, we’re going to do things a little differently. This couples wedding planner, Margo of Bright Occasions, got both sides of the couple’s first date story, which is great because this is a first date inspired engagement session. We want to showcase that day through their eyes! Keep reading for the story below. For their engagement photos the two chose to stroll around Old Town Alexandria with their photographer Elizabeth Fogarty. As a nod to their first date, they pair even grabbed some ice cream; how cute did those photos turn out?

Alexandra’s Side: We decided to meet up at Nicecream on a Monday evening. I was coming from work (teaching ballet) and didn’t have time to go home and change so I had to get ready at the studio. While I was changing, I pulled on my jeans and heard a huge ripping sound, and to my horror, I looked down and saw that I had ripped my jeans right by the zipper! I knew I couldn’t wear these pants on the date (so much for looking cute yet casual!) so I had to wear my jogger pants. Because of my jean incident, I was running late so I text Mark to apologize and would be there soon. When I arrived, he was waiting outside Nicecream and my first thought was, “Wow he’s cute!” He was very cool and understanding about my lateness and we laughed about my ripped pants story. We had great conversation at Nicecream and it seemed like we both didn’t want to end the date, so we walked to Northside Social to grab some tea and continue chatting. At the end of our date, Mark walked me to my car and asked if I was free next weekend. I was thinking, “YES! This is great!” I didn’t go home wondering when I would hear from him again. It was a great first date!

Mark’s Side: We met at the Nicecream Factory in Clarendon on Monday May 22nd, I was nervous to meet her and wondering if our chemistry would be as good in person as it was over our messages. She was running a little late (I’ll let her tell that part of the story, haha) which actually helped me calm down a little bit. When we met, I was drawn to her smile and our conversation continued to flow easily. We went for post-ice cream tea at Northside Social and carried on talking for a couple more hours; after walking her back to her car and saying good night, I smiled, turned around, and said to myself, “that’s how a first date is supposed to go!”
