Rustic Chic Hendry House Wedding
July 5, 2017

We hope everyone had a fun filled 4th of July! Did you enjoy the fireworks from somewhere unique? Tell us where in the comments!

Today’s Hendry House wedding features some of our all time favorite things! We’re suckers for a soft fall color story, a gorgeous setting, and Rockland’s BBQ. Bellwether Events, one of UWL’s very own DC area wedding vendors, created a rustic chic dream! From the lace and illustrated flower touches to the stunning floral and greenery arch that provided a backdrop for the ceremony, we are swooning over the flower filled details. The bridesmaid’s berry dresses and the wood farm tables added to the natural aesthetic of the day and had us wishing for crisp fall days. Okay, maybe not yet… we’ll keep summer a little longer, but we certainly aren’t dreading sweater weather! Thank you to Bellwether Events for sharing this rustic chic wedding with us today.

Rural Rustic Northern Virginia Wedding
February 13, 2017

These two lovebirds are the epitome of a DC power couple! Benji, a Senior Director at NEC, met Stacey, Director of Strategic Partnerships at the US Chamber of Commerce and former Press Secretary for Virginia Governor McDonnell and Chief of Staff for Congressman Eric Paulsen, at a barbecue hosted by a mutual friend. And they rest, they say, is history! Because of their political backgrounds, the pair opted for a slightly patriotic feel to their big day. They did so through gentle hints of smokey blues and deep reds. They even added donkey and elephant symbols in the escort cards, indicating the guests’ meal choices. How fun and adorable are those?!
We also couldn’t be more in love with the venue that they chose for their rustic reception. Instead of a rustic barn feel, the couple opted for a rustic wine cellar as their backdrop; Rappahannock Cellars has such a unique look with the barrels lining the walls that we can’t stop staring! And don’t miss out on those stunning grounds. The couple’s were able to get in some amazing rural shots. In addition to the awe we are feeling over the venue, Stacey and Benji’s wedding day attire must not be overlooked! From the sentimental locket of Benji’s recently departed father worn on the inside of his eye popping blue jacket to Stacey’s stunning Reem Acra gown with a skirt that is absolutely to die for, this couple celebrated in style and sentimentality. Thank you so much to Sara of Sincerely Pete Events for sharing this beautiful Northern Virginia winery wedding with us!

Comment below on your favorite DC area rustic wedding venue!

Ksant Photography in Tented Virginia Countryside Wedding

Hill Country

This unique rustic venue is one of our favorites because Hill Country is first and foremost, a barbecue restaurant. With its long sharing tables and electric, fun atmosphere, Hill Country is a relaxed alternative to grand ballroom settings. Choose from all of your BBQ favorites including brisket, ribs, pulled pork, and more and don’t forget all the fixins! Have them as sides or as hors d’oeuvres.

The Market at Grelen

We love this Virginia wedding venue for its 360-degree mountain views, luscious gardens, and locally sourced food. The grounds include an expansive Stone Terrace, a lawn overlooking berry fields, a Greenhouse filled with seasonal plants, and a gorgeous Orchard Overlook Tent.  All of these areas capture the natural beauty of the surrounding nursery while maintaining a simple yet elegant aesthetic. What a perfect setting to celebrate your love!

Murray Hill

Not your typical barn wedding setting, Murray Hill elevates the rustic feel that often comes with this type of wedding venue. This fifty-even acre estate overlooks the Potomac River and the Catoctin Mountains and features a stone manor residence with charming antiques and glowing fireplaces. With a beautiful outdoor garden and pool, you even have space that is perfect for cocktail hour. The barn is open on one side to a large green space that makes it perfect for lawn games, vintage furniture, and lounging while the interior is a blank canvas that you are able to completely transform to create the vision you want for your big day!

Springfield Manor

Springfield Manor Winery & Distillery truly is a versatile venue in that they have two distinct spaces that convey very different vibes. With an elegant ballroom and terrace, the large venue can accommodate a large number of guests up to 299! Their barn, however, is one of our favorites! It has rustic beams and beautiful farm tables that create a romantic setting and the glass panel doors expand the view and allow for a flow onto the adjoining patio.

Woodend Sanctuary and Mansion

Conveniently located just outside the city in Chevy Chase, Maryland, Woodend mansion makes for a stunning backdrop for your nuptials. With indoor and outdoor space, you are able to create just the rustic feeling you are going for in their charming grove and tented terrace.

President Lincoln’s Cottage

This historic venue provides many different packages that are perfect for your wedding! Their veranda provides a historic and memorable setting for intimate weddings. The majestic lawn, mature trees, and verdant gardens lend an air of enchantment, while the Cottage makes for a striking backdrop for a seated ceremony. For outdoor events, a tent may be erected on the lawn of the Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center or adjacent to President Lincoln’s Cottage. The use of the indoor space is incredibly beautiful as well. Depending on the package chosen, you can utilize the Cottage, the Education Center or both!

Castle Hill Cider

Just outside of Charlottesville, Castle Hill Cider uses a wide variety of locally grown apples to make their organic hard apple cider. You could host your wedding ceremony and reception overlooking their apple orchards and meadows in a large picturesque barn. The options are truly endless at this unique location that combines natural beauty and rustic charm! If you aren’t sold, check out this real rehearsal dinner at Castle Hill Cider. Just stunning!

Rock Hill Plantation House

Set in the undulating countryside in Stafford, Rock Hill is a gorgeous wedding venue that boasts southern hospitality and relaxation. If you ask us, that is just what you need on your wedding day! With a cute gazebo for an intimate ceremony and an elegant carriage house reception, you can’t go wrong with a rustic chic day at Rock Hill.

Elegant meets Rustic Virginia Wedding

Riverside on the Potomac Virginia wedding - Timmester Photography (54)

Riverside on the Potomac is on of our favorite rustic venues because of how incredibly versatile the grounds are at this Loudoun County gem. The groom wanted a large affair in a rural setting surrounded by nature, whereas the bride wanted a small wedding at an elegant setting, such as a country club. together, they opted for a super elegant rustic vibe with crip linens, flowing vines, and touches of gold and mercury glass. There were so many personal elements on this wedding, photographed by Stephanie Messick Photography, and you know how we love the addition of those! The groom’s mother made a guest book signing quilt and the bride’s father created all of the woodworking decor details that created this wedding’s homey rustic atmosphere. The couple continued to stay true to their personal style, with red and blue color accents in the barn and cowboy boots under the bride’s gown.

When this bride and groom began to plan their special day, they knew they wanted a relaxed atmosphere with a very chill bride. Their parents, on the other hand, wanted a more formal affair. Elegant meets Rustic Virginia Wedding: Sara + Brian
August 2, 2016

Brian and Sara met for a simple drinks date, which turned into a long night of talking and a whirlwind romance that neither saw coming! After dating for about a year, Brian decided to propose by hanging a ring on their dog Sophie’s collar. He used Sara’s late mother’s diamond to create a one of a kind heirloom engagement ring. And well, it’s no surprise, Sara said yes!

The planning of their Loudoun County wedding then went into full force. Brian wanted a large affair in a rural setting surrounded by nature, whereas Sara wanted a small wedding at an elegant setting such as a country club. The couple chose Riverside on the Potomac in Northern Virginia and they began mixing rustic and elegant in the design plans to create the perfect pairing. Both the bride and groom had lost their mothers, so they created a variety of sentimental pieces to add to the day, some of which included a table filled with special quotes and pictures and a mother son dance that honored all the “mothers” who have helped raise them. Sara’s good friends made mini desserts for all the guests to enjoy and the band played for hours while every single guest danced. Thank you to Designed Perfectly Events and Timmester Photography for sharing this beautiful Virginia wedding with us today!

Riverside on the Potomac Virginia wedding - Timmester Photography (18)From the Bride: “Brian wanted a rustic wedding that was in a nature setting. I wanted your black tie country club wedding–talk about opposites! We settled on a formal affair in a rustic setting with a beautiful scenic background. I liked more blush/muted colors with some pops of navy so our flowers were mainly pinks, greens and whites, table clothes neutral and gold and small pops of navy throughout–such as in the escort wall and bridesmaids dresses. The colors of the wedding were gold and navy. “Riverside on the Potomac Virginia wedding - Timmester Photography (19) Riverside on the Potomac Virginia wedding - Timmester Photography (22) Riverside on the Potomac Virginia wedding - Timmester Photography (24) Riverside on the Potomac Virginia wedding - Timmester Photography (23) Riverside on the Potomac Virginia wedding - Timmester Photography (28) Riverside on the Potomac Virginia wedding - Timmester Photography (30)

“We skipped a cake and a first dance. I’m not one for the “traditional” wedding formalities or all attention on me (a hard one when it comes to weddings 🙂 )! A friend of ours made hundreds of bite sized desserts for us to share with our guests–talk about amazing friends! We splurged on the band, the food and the flowers. Good music and good food makes a good party. “

“Brian and I lost our moms several years ago so it was important to us to somehow incorporate them into the wedding. At the ceremony we had our fathers come up to each light a candle in honor of our mothers while the song “the prayer” played in the background. At the cocktail hour, we had a table set with pictures of our mothers plus other close family members who had passed. I found meaningful quotes and my friend helped me to print them on rustic materials (such as an old wooden crate) to display amongst the pictures. My favorite quote was, “we didn’t realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun.” At the reception we did a special mother son dance where we called up all the women in our lives who have helped to fill the roll of mom since our mothers have passed. Each got to dance briefly with Brian while the song “never alone” played in the background. It was a fun and touching way to remember our mothers while also recognizing those who have been so good to us.
As for cultural touches, Brian is catholic an I’m Jewish so we decided to have both a Rabbi and a Priest at the ceremony. They worked great together and we got a ton of compliments from each side saying how they learned so much about the others faith.
“

Advice from the couple: “Just remember to have fun throughout the evening. There is always something that will not be just as you expected, but try to concentrate on the stuff that goes right. And…hire a good wedding planner. Mine was amazing and I never even knew what was going wrong at the time.

Also, a piece of advice I got before the wedding–‘at some point in the night, just stand back and look at all the people, love and fun in the room.’ It really was amazing to step away for a minute and see the joy of the day. ”

Maryland Rustic Farm Wedding: Liz + Will
May 16, 2016

When this bride and groom started planning their Maryland wedding ceremony and reception, they knew that a laid back atmosphere and chill vibe was crucial to the entire day. They paired their relaxed vision with their parents desire for a more formal reception to create a rustic wedding that was perfect for their guests. A couples often find out, compromise is a huge part of planning a wedding. From the parents vision to the preferences of each the bride and groom, coming up with a plan for a day that guests and the couple will love is so important! Liz and Will created their perfect setting with an outdoor cocktail party that included a bluegrass band and wedding lawn games, coupled with a fully stocked bar of their favorite libations. We especially loved the unique reception centerpieces that were a mix of textures including wood branches, moss, and lush colorful florals against burlap runners. Thank you to Kim Newton Events for sharing this fun, rustic wedding with us today!

From the Bride: “My groom and I are laid-back people who just would have ended up with a grill and a tent if we had planned by ourselves. My parents have been to enough classy events that they also had a vision of something more refined. When those two visions were put together, I feel like we got the best of both and I was really happy with the temporary world that was created.”

“In order to find their table, we had an old palette with hooks set into it. Each person had an old-fashioned key with a tag hanging, which included their name and their table assigned by whoever said the quote. My mom constructed the whole system and completed the calligraphy on the keys. Keys were a theme that ran throughout the event. It is the minor league team who hosted our rehearsal dinner, the symbol of a shared family sorority, and the name of the school that I work at. “

“The most important part of our wedding was that our guests had a fun-filled and well taken-care-of experience while still maintaining a laidback atmosphere. In order to do this, we held an indoor/outdoor cocktail reception complete with games and a live bluegrass band. My dad strongly advocated that more bartenders don’t add too much to the budget, but can make a huge difference. Walking into a wedding and immediately waiting in line can change the tone of the evening. Along with our families, and friends we just love to dance at weddings. We kicked off the dancing with a few songs before dinner.. “

“Each table had a quote from a favorite book or musician of ours. I had been collecting passages from books for years and my husband is both a literature and jam band lover. We tried to pick quotes that related to our relationships at that particular table. Will‘s parents actually chopped down a tree from their yard and cut the logs into slices. My mom then wrote the quotes in calligraphy and decoupage them onto the slices. Matt, our very talented florist, did a great job incorporating these pieces in with the flowers.”

Best advice from the couple: “Get a videography. My dad twisted my arm to get one and there were so many times throughout the night that I just remember thinking, “This is so amazing. I’m so glad it’s being taped.”

Multi-Cultural Rustic Maryland Wedding: Najia + Brian
April 27, 2016

Brian and Najia set out to create a calm, romantic oasis in the middle of the forest at their Maryland wedding venue, Thorpewood. Surrounded by their family and loved ones, they wanted to come together and share a personal piece of their heritage and life within their ceremony. They combined their varying cultures, Brian being Jewish and Najia’s Pakistani roots, with a multicultural ceremony and  dress change for the reception. The bride wore a western style ball gown to start the day before changing into a stunning midnight blue Pakistani dress for the reception. We absolutely loved the henna designs on her hands, arms, and feet, and that their talented photographers at Procopio Photography were able to capture her henna ceremony before the wedding. After the ceremony they moved into the rustic lodge for a reception catered by Canapes. Each piece of the wedding, from the attire to the books in the decor, were carefully chosen by the couple to ensure that the wedding felt personal and touched with their spirit. Thank you to Procopio Photography for sharing today’s rustic Thorpewood wedding with us!

From the Bride: “We wanted an outdoor wedding that was that really spoke about us and it being very personal bringing the vibe and calmness that represents us. Combining our varying cultures and styles but more importantly making it a calm, romantic gathering of friends & family to celebrate our union.”

Rustic Barns at Hamilton Station Wedding: Carly + Brian
April 13, 2016

What can we say about Carly and Brian’s Northern Virginia Barn wedding? Well, for starters we wish we had been on the guest list because they look like a couple who know how to have a great party! The couple have been dating since college, for over 9 nears, and their friends and family were so excited to finally be able to celebrate them as newlyweds! When trying to decide what was most important in the planning stages they knew one thing was for certain, they absolutely must have the perfect wedding reception band.  The couple are Carbon Leaf super fans, so they went for a big leaf and reached out to them to play at their wedding. Although they said it was a small splurge on their budget, for the bride, seeing the band as she entered the ceremony playing her processional music was a unforgettable moment and worth every penny. We love how they prioritized the details that were the most important to them and were able to have something so special as a part of their wedding day. A big thank you to United with Love vendor guide member Birds of a Feather Photography for sharing this rustic Hamilton wedding with us today!

From the Bride: “Our vision was primarily to have a big, celebratory party. We had been dating since college (2006) at James Madison University (GO DUKES!), so our friends and family knew we were basically married already. We wanted a simple ceremony in a place we felt comfortable, followed by a rockin’ party where everyone would have an amazing time.”Barns at Hamilton Station Wedding Birds of a Feather photography (65) View More: http://birdsofafeatherphotos.pass.us/carly-and-brian-wedding View More: http://birdsofafeatherphotos.pass.us/carly-and-brian-wedding View More: http://birdsofafeatherphotos.pass.us/carly-and-brian-wedding View More: http://birdsofafeatherphotos.pass.us/carly-and-brian-wedding Barns at Hamilton Station Wedding Birds of a Feather photography (76) View More: http://birdsofafeatherphotos.pass.us/carly-and-brian-wedding View More: http://birdsofafeatherphotos.pass.us/carly-and-brian-wedding

“Our priorities were photography, food, and music. We were really picky with our vendor choices, which was a little exhausting at times. But when we found them, without question, we were absolutely in love with the choices we made, and they combined to make our big day everything we hoped it would be.”

“Our splurge was 100% getting Carbon Leaf to play our wedding, which was a dream come true. We’ve had some disappointing interactions with musicians we really like in the past, but Carbon Leaf are all as personable and good-natured people as they are amazingly gifted musicians.”

Personal touches: “In choosing our vendors, we put emphasis on finding people with which we could take a hands-off approach, and who we trusted to use their skills to provide us with a final product we knew would be amazing. We were able to let them be creative, and do their thing, and it was great! I had a TARDIS, from Dr. Who, in my bouquet as my “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” I’m a pretty huge nerd, so this was my way of slipping that part of myself in there.

Brian, the groomsmen, the ring bearer and his dad all wore ties with the Kennedy clan tartan, as his family is of Scottish ancestry. The box for the rings was Brian’s grandfather’s, which his mom had refinished and his nephew, the ring bearer, carried. Carly’s aunts from Massachusetts brought down the conch shell they blow to get everyone gathered at family events- that was especially fun as Brian’s family didn’t know what was happening when everyone started blowing it!”

Favorite Moments from the Bride: “The whole day was kind of a big, happy blur for me. My mom sang a silly song to me as she walked me down the aisle. My sister and her friends trying to make more noise at their table than Brian and I’s friends from college at dinner. Seeing everyone in one place at one time, feeling the warmth and love in the room and just a glow of happiness over everything- it sounds cheesy, but that feeling is what I remember most.

From the Groom: “Being up on the deck with my groomsmen when Carbon Leaf started to play Life Less Ordinary, acoustic, out on the lawn where the ceremony was going to take place. It just hit me like a ton of bricks that over a year of planning and preparation was officially coming to fruition.”

Tips and Advice: “Step back and let your vendors do their thing. I got overwhelmed early on and decided that they were the experts, and they would do their best work if we got out of their hair. It was totally the right decision, and I wish I had realized that earlier on before I got so stressed out! Also, day-of coordinator! I was so relaxed the day of and was able to enjoy it because I knew Kelley had my back and everything was awesome. It was nice not to have to think about anything except having a good time!”

From the Groom:  “I know it’s incredibly cliche, but it’s true: make sure you take a few spare moments to really soak it in. For all the work, time, and money you put into such a big event, it’s ultimately your big day. It really does fly by, so grab a couple seconds here and there to look around at all the people who’ve come to join you in celebration, and enjoy what you’ve accomplished.”

“We had an incredible wedding and were so fortunate that so many stars aligned for us to have what was, essentially, a perfect day. We can’t thank our team enough for providing us with stunning services, and our friends and families for coming out and partying with us.”

Rustic Bohemian Glenview Mansion Wedding: Samantha + Dan
April 6, 2016

Samantha and Dan chose a perfectly quaint Maryland wedding venue, Glenview Mansion, for their rustic meets bohemian wedding. They wanted to carry out their vision of a unique wedding and found inspiration in all of their favorite things! The couple’s bunny Cappuccino is such a big part of their lives that they wanted to make sure he was present on the wedding day in spirit. They incorporated Cappuccino by naming their wedding signature cocktail, “Cappuccino’s Cocktail,” after him; the drink was made of spiced apple cider. They also had an adorable bunny stamp on their wedding invitations and ceremony programs as a small personal touch. Although married in the heart of the fall season, they went for a non traditional color palette for the big day weaving in the brides favorite color, blue. Navy bridesmaids dresses paired with wild pink florals complimented the gentlemen in blue suiting. We loved the mixture of fall decor accents, such as pumpkins, against the unique color pops. Thank you to Amber Kay Photography for sharing today’s rustic meets bohemian Maryland wedding!

From the Bride: “Our vision was an elegant, romantic, fall garden wedding with a beautiful, historic mansion as the focal point. My favorite color is blue, so we chose navy bridesmaid dresses, and navy suits and light blue ties for the groomsmen. Dan wore a navy suit and a blue bison plaid tie, with a blue thistle boutonniere. Our Save the Dates and wedding invitations incorporated different shades of blue, and the ceremony programs were printed on blue card stock. Pink was the accent color, which we used in the bouquets, and the Chuppah flowers incorporated both blue and pink.

We really tried to carry out our vision for the wedding in just about every detail- our photographer’s style of pictures (romantic, light, airy), the bohemian-inspired floral designs, the framed vintage pictures, the elegant historic venue, the ceremony location in the garden with a rustic Chuppah, the colorful beautifully presented food, my bridal look (soft romantic makeup, vintage-inspired jewelry and dress, soft up-do), the rustic simple naked cake, the handmade guestbook, etc.”

“My favorite moments were our first look (I had to make it down a million stone steps without falling to reach Dan!) and walking down the aisle with my dad.”

“The white birch Chuppah used in our wedding ceremony was handmade, we ordered the parts from an Etsy store and assembled the Chuppah ourselves. The wine glass that we drank out of for the wine blessing was my mother’s glass used at her wedding. I also  personally handmade our guest book, the white bird cage card holder, the ceremony programs, and collected all of the picture frames used throughout the mansion of our friends and family.”

Tips from the Bride: “Take the time to research vendors outside of your immediate area. We found the most amazing photographer in VA about an hour from where we live, but it was so worth it!

We found it extremely valuable to have a wedding planner, especially for day-of coordination. Elegance and Simplicity kept us on track and made sure everything went as planned, which meant that we could enjoy our wedding without having to worry about any of the details or timing of things.”
