Lincoln Memorial Marriage Proposal: Kate + Kevin
April 16, 2015

I am just absolutely in love with this Washington DC marriage proposal! There’s just something about being able to watch it unfold with these gorgeous photos from Kelci Alane Photography that make it so incredibly romantic. Kevin e-mailed Kelci about a month before his proposal in need of a photographer. They met at the Lincoln Memorial to go over logistics. Thankfully, the weather held up and Kelci was able to blend in with the crowd”whew! Everything went perfectly, and as you can see my loves, Kate (great name by the way!) was so surprised. Love it!

Constitution Gardens Marriage Proposal: Susie + Kevin
March 20, 2015

In honor of today being National Proposal Day, we are celebrating with this Washington DC marriage proposal. So, grab your tissues because this one comes with a super cute story featuring childhood sweethearts captured by Boraie Photography. When Kevin met Susie for the first time, they were five years old. They reconnected after college and the rest is history! Kevin decided to pop the question and chose Constitution Gardens on a lovely Saturday morning, full of sunshine. Susie’s close friends were invited to hide and watch the proposal unfold. They made their appearance after Susie said “yes,” and as you can see, the photos had beautiful results!

Wedding Marriage Proposal in Georgetown: Carmela + Jimmy
January 23, 2015

Warning: Grab a box of tissues because this Washington DC marriage proposal caught on camera is the sweetest thing you’ll see all day! Jimmy surprised Carmela with a puzzle piece scavenger hunt in Georgetown that started at Dean & DeLuca and ended at the Old Stone House. Elizabeth Fogarty Photography was on hand to capture Jimmy get down on one knee and all the sweet moments following!

From Carmela: That Sunday was a busy one. We started our day off normally by going to mass at Georgetown and then walked over to meet some friends for brunch, but little did I know that after our brunch plan Jimmy was running around DC to set up the proposal. When I returned home, I texted Jimmy that I was back and asked where he was. He responded with “Check out the mirror when you get a chance.” Confused, I walked over to our full-size mirror and on top was a puzzle piece with a little envelope that said, “Let’s change it up today.” I opened up the envelope and inside was a note explaining that there were 3 more puzzle pieces I needed to find in DC and those will lead me to him. Clue 1: Our first date (And in case I didn’t remember, he included a Dean & Deluca business card behind the clue)

I arrived at Dean & Deluca and text him asking if he was there. All he replied was “nope.” So I was left to try to wander the store for clues or something that stood out. I was almost at the back of the store when I got to the sushi counter and found behind the glass a package of two puzzle pieces and a clue wrapped in a red bow. I immediately grabbed it and read the clue. The clue said “Do you remember our first date? “I loved that date. We shared so many memories since then and I want to tell you them. “Next location: 1) Google the coordinates; 2) Meet me there at 7pm”

The coordinates led me to the Old Stone House in Georgetown. This was the location where I first admitted that I liked him and he admitted that he felt the same way. When I texted him that I was one block away from the Old Stone House, I already saw a crowd outside. I thought it was odd, but as I got closer, I noticed that it was only him and a photographer inside the back garden. At this point, I definitely realized that this was not a scavenger hunt towards a fancy dinner: something a little bigger was happening.

He held up the last puzzle piece and began telling me that it was 7 years since we first met at Georgetown and many other happy memories.  He led me down a rose petal covered path up to the bench where we spent an evening chatting and he continued his speech. Then got down on one knee and pulled out a box from his pocket. He asked me to marry him… and I said “YES!”

Military Wedding Planning Advice
November 12, 2014

Being the nation’s capital and all, you know that we love our military brides and grooms! We adore and appreciate our of our active military and veterans, and especially our engaged military and their families for their sacrifice and dedication to this country. (And, it isn’t just because of those handsome grooms in uniform, although that does help!) We’ve featured lots of different types of military weddings over the years and this week we are taking it one step farther. In honor of this year’s Veterans Day, we are having a special military wedding week – we are talking all things weddings and military!

military-Wedding-Cake-Cutting

Photo Credit:  Melissa Arlena Photography from Margo and Mike’s Marine Corps wedding in Virginia

From what I’ve learned so far, there aren’t as many rules and regulations to a military wedding as one might think, just more traditions and things to be aware of when planning a military wedding. With this in mind, I asked some of the top wedding planners in DC, MD and VA for their best advice for military weddings. What do they tell their military couples? Is there anything special or particular that our brides and grooms in uniform should look out for or be aware of when planning their wedding? Here is what they had to say…

INSURANCE

I would advise the client if they were active duty to get wedding insurance. You never know with deployment.” – Vicky, owner of Event Accomplished

“As you plan a military wedding, I would strongly suggest in investing in wedding insurance. If the wedding date has to be moved due to deployment or special assignment of the bride and/or groom, you want to make sure there is minimal financial loss.  Most vendors and venues will honor deposits made and move dates around, but what if not all of the vendors hired are available on the new date? Wedding insurance is priceless in this instance.” – Shawn, owner of TreBella Events

INVITATIONS

“Be mindful of military titles, which typically include rank and branch of service, when wording your wedding invitation. The format and the wording of the invitation are the same, but the use of titles is different. Military titles should not be abbreviated. When officers’ names are used alone, the name of their branch of service is noted on the line beneath their names. When their names are used with their spouse’s names, the branch of service is not mentioned.  If their ranking is a captain or higher, officers in the army, air force or marines will use their military titles before their names. Navy and coast guard officers with a rank of commander or higher also use their military titles before their names.” – Kawania, owner of Howerton + Wooten Events

ATTIRE

“Military weddings aren’t that different from any other weddings. There’s actually no official protocol to follow. There are, however, a lot of fun traditions that military couples may choose to incorporate, such as attire. Men may choose to wear their full dress uniform instead of a tuxedo or other suit. Women may do the same, but most brides and bridesmaids opt for traditional wedding apparel. Also, military personnel in uniform may not wear flowers, so no boutonnieres for those dashing gentlemen!” – Stephanie, owner of Pretty Entertaining

DISCOUNTS

“I always tell all of my clients that are in the military to ask for military discounts from their vendors.  We are a very pro military family town (in the Washington DC area) and I know our firm gives 10% discount off all our services to folks in the military.” –  Katie, owner of Elegance & Simplicity

“Don’t forget to ask every vendor if they offer a military discount, as most of them do or will if asked. – Courtney, owner of A Sweet Soiree

VENUES

“While a lot of venues have flexibility, if you’re having a military wedding on the base or academy grounds, book your military chapel a full year out. These venues are open to: a dependent of a graduate; an officer or enlisted person assigned to the academy complex, or his or her dependents; or a faculty or staff member, active or retired, or his or her dependents so they get busy, and fast.” – Candy, of Candy + Co. Events

“Take advantage of venues that are on military bases. For example, Fort Myer (in Arlington, VA) has a beautiful chapel and officer’s club for events.” – Courtney, owner of A Sweet Soiree

“Couples who are military will have many great customs and traditions they may want to include. From a logistical standpoint, if they are active duty, flexibility with date will be a big factor when choosing the venue and vendors. In addition, to thinking about the details and logistics is attire. Grooms may want to wear their military dress uniform for all or part of the wedding day, such as for photos and/or the ceremony.” – Margo, owner of Bright Occasions

“If you are having your wedding on a military base, be aware of the entry policies. Everyone should carry their ID with them, because you will likely be asked for it before entering the base. So if you’re a bridesmaid, don’t accidentally give it to your date while you’re taking pictures between the ceremony and reception!” – Heather, owner of HJ Planners

“If the wedding is held on a military base, usually IDs are required for all guests and to allow for plenty of time to account for going through security check points. – Vicky, owner of Event Accomplished

“Military couples may choose to marry at a chapel on base and/or hold their reception at the officer’s club. Remember to book these facilities early in the planning process, as they tend to be in high demand.” – Stephanie, owner of Pretty Entertaining

SWORDS, SABERS AND SEATING

“Military weddings are a little bit different. Essentially couples need to be aware that each branch of the armed forces has different wedding customs that apply. Besides the groom wearing his military dress (if he’s a member of the military) two things that we find most common in all of the military weddings are that: (1) If the groom is wearing a saber or cutlass (with his white gloves) for the ceremony the bride will stand to the right of him instead of the left (to avoid contact with the blade though this blade does come in handy when cutting the cake!); and (2) Special accommodation should be made to seat guests according to rank (i.e. all high ranking officials should be seated in positions of honor at both the ceremony (first two rows) and the reception (close to the couple).” – Candy, of Candy + Co. “If there are sufficient number of military members in the wedding party, then the newly married couple may exit the wedding ceremony through an arch of ceremonial weapons. Officers hold a sword or saber; enlisted personnel hold a ceremonial rifle.” – Stephanie, owner of Pretty Entertaining

“If you plan to cut your cake with your sword or saber, ask your caterer to thoroughly clean it before putting it back in the scabbard. Otherwise, the sugar from the cake could ruin the blade and the scabbard.” – Heather, owner of HJ Planners

Wedding Floral Needs, Options and Advice
October 17, 2014

Its been a big wedding flower crash course here in DMV this wee! But, before we leave you for the weekend, let’s do one more advice post for wedding floral week here on United With Love. (Rememeber, very shortly we’ll be back with even more wedding floral advice for all of our couples planning a wedding in the Washington DC area. We have so much great advice from the best wedding florists in DC, Maryland and Virginia, that I couldn’t just leave it at one week! So, stay tuned because I’m planning a whole second week.)

For today, let’s talk about specific floral needs, quantities, locations and more. If you know what you need, and what the options are when it comes to flowers, then you can plan and budget a little bit better. There are so many choices of where and who to adorn with flowers on your wedding day, so I asked our expert wedding floral designers in the Washington DC area what they recommend to their clients. Where do they typically see floral arrangements being placed? And, most importantly, where should brides and grooms invest their floral dollars, as in what will have the biggest impact? Here is what they had to say¦

This is a hard question, because weddings are truly unique nowadays. We are seeing a lot of cocktail receptions, which don’t require the usual escort table or reception centerpieces. Not every wedding has a traditional wedding party, so even bridesmaids’ bouquets are not guaranteed. he important piece is to identify what needs decor and go from there. – Liza, owner of Studio DBI

You want to invest your money in what will be in all your photos (the bouquets), and where guests spend the most time (the reception). If it’s in your budget, it’s worth it to splurge on a dramatic escort table piece, as this is the first thing your guests see at the reception and can set the tone.  Gerry and Rebecca, owners of Petal’s Edge Floral Design

Typically, you start with the bridal party, which usually includes, the bride, bridesmaids, groom, groomsmen, parents, grandparents, ushers, ring bearer and flower girl. We have seen a great deal of ˜grooms women’ and ˜brides men,, which is a female on the grooms side or a male on the brides side. You may want to consider flowers for the hair and other special people, such as readers, the officiant or family members you want to recognize. The ceremony and reception items will of course depend greatly on the location, but you will want arrangements at the altar, on the huppah, or the space you will be designating to say ˜I do,’ flowers down the aisle, petals, a runner, unity candle, presentation bouquets or flowers for Mary in Catholic weddings or for in memory of a family member, wreaths or swags for the front doors. The reception can be as simple as candles on the table up to a garland of flowers down the table and floral chandeliers hanging above. You should always have something on the escort card table, possibly the guest book table, an entry table, buffet stations, fireplace mantels, cake flowers, a toss bouquet, an arrangement for the ladies room, the list can go on and on depending on the space, the budget and your willingness to get creative.  Shelly, owner of B Floral and Event Design

Depending on how important flowers are to the couple and their budget, I recommend the following: bridal bouquet, boutonnieres, bridesmaid bouquets, ceremony flowers, centerpieces, escort card table. Additional floral design items might include, personal flowers for family or children, bar arrangements, cocktail table arrangements, bride and groom chair flowers.   Alicia, owner of Alicia Jayne Florals

Personal flowers for the entire wedding party, and most importantly inspirational altar pieces and/or backdrops. Your guests are seated waiting to see you, but until that time, use your backdrop or altar pieces to evoke emotion – It’s your day, and your stage-make it great!  Jennifer, owner of J. Morris Flowers

These are the main areas we touch on and there are countless more depending on where your venues are: Bridal bouquet (a must!); attendants bouquets; flower girl accoutrements, i.e. pomander, hair wreath; groom’s boutonniere; groomsmen boutonnieres; any other personal florals for mothers, fathers, special people to recognize; nuptials decor to include framing area for couple (This may include draping, arch, chuppah, pedestals with floral, or mandap.); chair/pew decor; entry area; placecard/escort table; cocktail tables; reception; centerpieces; cake/dessert table; and toss bouquet   Christi, president of Bergerons Flowers

Here are the basic pieces that we start out with: Bouquets for brides/bridesmaids; corsages for moms/readers/grandmothers and some children; baskets/wreaths/pomanders for flower girls; boutonnieres for fathers/grandfathers/groomsmen/brothers/readers/etc.; ceremony decor; aisle decor; cocktail hour tables; escort card table; mantels; door wreaths; centerpieces; cake flowers; and buffet arrangements. Other special items would be bar and bathroom flowers, stairway railings and florals for pathways/arches.  Katie, owner of Elegance & Simplicity

Bouquet, and boutonnieres are the most photographed, noticed and enjoyed. Ceremony flowers are the least important due to the fact that guests are so enthralled with the couple and wedding party, so that this is the first place to cut back. The ceremony is also the shortest period of time during the entire event. The cutbacks can be made unless the clients are having a Jewish ceremony, which would require a chuppah. Chuppahs are a very high end design item. Centerpieces are the next most important design element, as guests will be staring at these for many hours. The centerpieces will greatly impact your photographs. You can skip the place card, cake, mantels and guest book, if budget is of concern. Holly, owner of Holly Chapple Flowers

“In addition to the typical requests (bouquet, bridesmaids, ceremony, reception, escort card tables etc,), cake flowers are a popular request. Also, if the budget permits aisle decor for the church are a nice element. – Lisa, owner of Petals and Promises
