Snowy Vineyard Wedding in Virginia: Kate + Greg
January 3, 2012

Happy New Year everyone!  I hope you had a wonderful and relaxing holiday!  We’re ready to get back to business with a gorgeous wedding from Sam Hurd Photography to help kick off the new year.  We haven’t had much snow yet this winter, but today’s wedding proves that you can’t always trust Mother Nature to follow her own traditions.  Kate and Greg were married in late October, just when a surprise snowstorm decided to drop by the DC area!  Kate and Greg had already planned a lovely wedding with natural and rustic details at Bluemont Vineyard and while the snow might have been unexpected, it only made the day even more beautiful and special.

From Kate: When we set out to plan the wedding, we knew we wanted people to walk away saying, “That was so Greg and Kate.”  We integrated all of the things we loved into our special day: nature, antiques, things that were hand made, and simplicity.  We did not want to take away from the meaning of that day, so we kept the color palette neutral and natural and instead focused on the colors we expected to arise from a fall wedding at a vineyard.  Little did we know, mother nature had the most beautiful white snow in store for us.

Our favorite memory is seeing one another for the first time on the day of the wedding.  It had been a stressful day up until that point.  Plans were changing and people were scrambling around.  While the snow was beautiful, it caused chaos up until the final moments.  When we saw eachother for the first time that day, it all disappeared.  We remembered why we were there and if only 5 people showed up, the day was going to have the same results.  It was a great moment to share with one another minutes before the ceremony began.

We aren’t religious, but we wanted our ceremony to be different another moment where people walked away and thought, “Wow. That was so Greg and Kate.”  We chose a handfasting ceremony, which is a ceremony in which the hands are literally bound together.  That’s where the term “tying the knot” comes from.

While many of our guests may not consider it a “detail,” the snow was our most favorite aspect of the entire day.  While the pictures most definitely speak for themselves, we felt warm and excited at the idea of snow in October.  And we were getting married.  Between the nerves and excitement, it certainly didn’t feel as cold as it looks.  We were so fortunate that everyone was able to make it safely in the unexpected weather, but we were told often that it was the most beautiful wedding anyone had ever seen.  While we’d like to take the credit for most of that, we know that the snow had a lot to do with it.

We also incorporated a lot of meaningful decor into our reception.  Our centerpieces and “guest log” were cut from trees at my grandmother’s house in upstate New York.  Although we didn’t have a cake, we had my grandmother and grandfather’s cake topper from their wedding displayed at our pie table.

We put a lot of trust into many aspects of our wedding day.  The bridesmaids were allowed to pick whatever dresses they wanted.  We found two of the vendors were from craigslist and never met with them prior to the wedding.  The florist was told to put out whatever flowers she thought were pretty.  While many of the details mattered to us, we instilled a lot of trust in the people around us.  Had we not allowed ourselves to trust vendors new to the business, or our friends to be fashion forward, the day wouldn’t have been the same.  The trust that we have in one another spilled over onto the trust we had that others would support our love with their talents and judgement.

Kate’s advice for other DC-area couples:

Upon our engagement, we received the advice that every couple receives: “Ask for help;” “Do not try to do it all on your own;” “Enjoy the engagement, it’s such a fun time.”  We didn’t listen, and we now wish we had.  Most of our wedding was DIY.  We spent months on end digging through thrift stores for milk glass vases, or knick knacks for the gift table.  We often denied time with our friends and instead were glued to the glue gun for weekends at a time.  Our advice is to ask for help, and to know it’s okay to not take on everything yourself.  Cherish your newlywed moments, they really are as important as everyone says they are.

As a special treat, we have the wedding video from Villatoro Productions so now you can see more of their snowy day! Enjoy!

Beautiful and Natural Outdoor Vineyard Wedding in Virginia: Libby + Joshua
June 20, 2011

Today’s Virginia wedding literally took my breath away the first time I saw it each detail is just more beautiful than the last, from the stunning baby’s breath bouquet to the gorgeous burlap and birch chuppah to a touching handmade wedding ketubah.  Libby and Joshua were married last May at Bluemont Vineyard in Virginia, which proved to be the perfect backdrop for the natural, laid back vibe that Libby and Joshua wanted for their outdoor wedding.  Libby worked with Holly Chapple Flowers on all of the floral arrangements and to bring her wedding vision to life, while enlisting Madalina Lesan Photography to capture the memories from the big day.

From Libby: We wanted the wedding to be beautiful, outdoors, laid back, and for it to feel like us.  I fell in love with the idea of baby’s breath and incorporated it throughout the wedding.  The wedding needed to be outside and big enough to fit all the poeple we wanted there.  Being able to have everyone there was a priority for us.  I loved everything about our wedding, and so many people told us that it was a perfect representation of us as a couple, and I loved that.  I just really kind of fought for my vision, which I would recommend to other couples planning their weddings.

My cousin is a graphic designer and made our beautiful invitations.

I fell in love with the idea of a baby’s breath bouquet.  I loved that I had baby’s breath, my groom’s boutonniere was baby’s breath, and my little flower girl had a baby’s breath kissing ball.  I also love toile but I didn’t want a lot of it in the wedding because it is more me than it is us.  Our flower girl wore an amazing toile pillow case dress from etsy that I loved, and she was my toile element.

My maid of honor hand painted our ketubah (jewish wedding contract).  It was based on a picture of us from one of our road trips, which we love to take.  I think it was the most beautiful and unique ketubahs I have ever seen, but I am obviously partial.

Joshua and I didn’t wear shoes!  My husband had to borrow his brother’s sandal to break the glass at the end of the ceremony.

My chuppah.  I ordered the beautiful poles online.  Burlap acted as our table runners, so we decided to cover the chuppah with it too.  I love how the open sides symbolize us opening our home to loved ones.  I also loved having our brothers and friends hold the chuppah poles, as it symbolizes the support they have and do offer us on our journey.

A definite highlight was the slideshow my husband surprised me with.  He had our friends and family contribute pictures and videos.  There is a picture of us sitting on the floor of the barn watching the slideshow.  I loved it.  Our wedding was a true celebration.  Everyone was so on board and just seemed to believe in us and want to celebrate with us.  It was a total love fest.

Flower Girls and Ring Bearer Photo Inspiration
March 21, 2019

We all know that sometimes ring bearers and flower girls can steal the show as they walk (or run, or scoot, or crawl) down the aisle. They’re just too darn adorable! These days there are so many options for your flower girls and ring bearers. Traditionally, flower girls carry buckets of petals to toss as they head down the aisle; ring beareres carry a pillow or box with the wedding bands in them. But what else can they do or wear? We asked some of our favorite DC area wedding photographers to give us their best flower girl and ring bearer photo inspiration. Personally we love when they’re carrying signs or small versions of the bridal bouquet. Then again, we do love a good tradition. Either way, you can’t go wrong. We hope they brighten your day as much as they did ours!

6 Steps to a Perfect Wedding in Loudoun
March 5, 2019

You’ve finally found the love of your life, your best friend, your person — and there’s no better feeling than taking the next step with them. We know how eager you are to plan the wedding of your dreams, but we certainly don’t want any of these big decisions keep you up at night! To help, Visit Loudoun has assembled a little guide to help make sure that you’re absolutely in love with every detail of your special day. Before you walk down the aisle, check out these six steps to the perfect wedding in Loudoun County. You’ll find that Loudoun’s historic charm, craft culture and vibrant countryside make it the most romantic location to get married. And don’t forget to register for their Weddings in Loudoun Open House Weekend this weekend, March 9th and 10th! You can even map your stops beforehand to make the whole process stress free. Hope to see you there!

The Venue

Some wedding venues book up years in advance, so locking down all your celebration locations is great place to start. Whether you want an elegant wedding with winery views, rustic-chic nuptials in a remodeled barn or a traditional church ceremony, Loudoun’s got it all. Wedding venues in Loudoun offer the perfect setting for guest lists both intimate and infinite.

The Date

It’s always the “season of love” in Loudoun! Save the date for a spring or summer ceremony when the flowers are in full bloom at Oatlands Historic House and Gardens. Alternatively, aim for an autumn wedding as the leaves begin to turn against the Blue Ridge Mountains at Bluemont Vineyard. Or, why not wed in winter at Mt. Defiance Distillery’s “wow”-worthy barn? The evolving Loudoun landscape provides timeless beauty and serves as a stunning backdrop, no matter the month!

The Dress

Once the venue and date are set in stone, the dress moves to the top of the list. Whether you go lace or beaded, long-sleeved or sweetheart, mermaid or princess, the shops in Loudoun have got you covered. At Le Reve Bridal House, you can shop ‘til you drop with the feeling that you found “the one”. After finding the dress, you’ll need new bling to keep up that wedding “glow” on your big day. Take a day to stroll through designer shops at the Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets or wander through Loudoun’s downtown streets to discover the one-of-a-kind piece that will complete your bridal vibe!

The Drinks

Picking drink options can often be a challenge… but, for Loudoun County weddings, it’s one of those “good-problem-to-have” challenges. Do you go with beer, wine or maybe specialty cocktails? While the choice is up to you and your spouse-to-be, just know that the options are endless in Loudoun. We’re talking 40+ wineries, 30+ breweries and several distilleries. Then again, why choose? To us, the perfect combo is something like a few cases of vino from Breaux Vineyards, growlers from Ocelot Brewing Company and bottles from Catoctin Creek Distilling Company. Thanks to Loudoun’s craft beverage scene, you’ll be ready to hit the dance floor with your friends, family and loved ones!

The Food

Of course, dancing up a storm means working up an appetite. So, what kind of feasting do you want your wedding to feature? Luckily, Loudoun’s chefs to bring serious culinary chops to the table, whatever your palate prefers. Go casual with comfort food from Monk’s BBQ or dine in decadence with a menu from Magnolia’s at the Mill. If there’s a unique twist to your taste, try The Conche’s specialty treats. Check out their Vendors page to plan a mouthwatering wedding that will keep you full ‘til your first anniversary — bon appétit!

The Stay

Your wedding day will be fun, but busy. (They don’t call it “your big day” for nothing!) So, planning your escape to a sweet oasis for two at the end of the night is maybe the most essential detail. Take your pick of a cozy haven like Fieldstone Farm Bed and Breakfast, a luxury resort like Lansdowne Resort or a convenient retreat like the Comfort Suites. No matter where you choose to crash, Loudoun’s amenities will keep you rested and relaxed in wedded bliss.

Hopefully this six-step wedding planning guide has you off on the right foot. However, we also cordially invite you to attend our Weddings Open House Weekend to explore the best of Loudoun’s venues and vendors first hand! Then, check out our Weddings Page to take full advantage of Visit Loudoun’s complimentary services. We can help ensure that your wedding is the best day of your life… and know it’s just the beginning of your happily ever after.

Elegant Loudoun Barn Wedding
September 27, 2017

Jen and Justin said their I Do’s and celebrated with family and friends at Shadow Creek Weddings, a newer Loudoun County wedding venue in the heart of Loudoun County. This sweet couple met in college six years ago and got engaged in 2015. Justin proposed to Jen while they were at the always gorgeous Bluemont Vineyards with their families. Their wedding day began with an intimate ceremony at St Peter’s Episcopal Church. The couple exchanged personal vows and rings solidifying the years to come as husband and wife.

They planned for a classic meets quaint wedding design. This paired perfectly with the more sophisticated, rustic nature of the venue. The florals from Rick’s Flowers had touches of english garden and design elements reminiscent of a southern manor home. Jen chose whitewashed cake stands, personalized seed packet favors, and floral accents that would continue the southern elegance theme throughout. Much of Jen’s family traveled from England, and other family members came from Gibraltar. In honor of their far traveled guests they offered a traditional English dessert alongside mixed desserts. They also sent off their guests with s’more favors. Thank you to Bethanne Arthur Photography for sharing a look into this elegant Shadow Creek wedding!!

Favorite Moments from the Bride: “My first favorite moment was when I got down the aisle and finally got to see Justin’s face. He was smiling from ear to ear, and I definitely saw a few tears. This was also a slightly funny moment because my dress was long and I hadn’t walked on carpet before. It kept catching on the carpet so I had to kick it forward, and my dad was really worried I was going to trip. However I made it down the aisle without tripping!

Saying our vows was also a very emotional and memorable moment. We had gone over the vows and their meanings in our pre-marital counseling classes at the church so when we finally got to say them to each other it was very special. We plan to frame our vows with some of our wedding pictures. My dad and I’s first dance was very special because he had been working very hard on it. My mom made him go to dance lessons since, even though he loves music, my dad is a terrible dancer. He was so nervous about the dance and getting everything right, and it ended up being absolutely perfect and we both had a lot of fun. “

From the Couple: “While we were planning our wedding the most important thing to us remembering that the most important thing was that we were getting married. Justin and I have been together for six years, and engaged for two of those years. It sounds cheesy, but while we were excited about celebrating our special day with our friends and family, we were really most excited about being married and spending the rest of our lives together.”

“The biggest splurge we had was our food. Justin and I enjoy spending our weekends cooking different types of meals or eating at unique restaurants. We are BIG foodies, so we wanted to make sure the quality of the food was going to be amazing. A la Carte Catering had an amazing quality of food and was very open to all of our requests. “

About the Cake: “So I am well known among my friends and families for my cake baking and decorating. However, I did not want the stress of making my wedding cake, so I was more than happy to hand that responsibility over to our caterer. They made us a delicious lemon raspberry cake that was simply decorated with fresh flowers and our custom Mr and Mrs Weiser topper. They also made us a Baileys chocolate cake as a grooms cake, which is a southern tradition. The topper on the grooms cake was Justin’s parents wedding cake topper. I did end up making one cake, which was our fruit cake. It is traditional in England to have fruitcakes at weddings so my mom and I made one for our wedding and I decorated it shortly before the wedding day with simply white fondant flowers. “

Advice from the Couple: “First of all, always remember that your wedding is about more than just a day, it’s about a marriage. This sounds simple, but it’s important when you are getting bogged down in details and start getting stressed out. Also, when you are planning on a budget decide what is the most important to you. We wanted a good caterer and photographer. Our food was amazing and Bethanne captured the day perfectly so we will always remember it. Also be open to accepting help from people. My mom and sister helped out a lot with the decor, I had a family friend address all of our invitations for us, and one of my bridesmaid’s husband videotaped the wedding for us. They all did an amazing job, and it felt so special coming from people who care about us so much. ”

See it all captured in breathtaking images by Pinwheel Collective right here…

When you get engaged, buy every wedding magazine you can. Then after a few weeks, cut yourself off from all of it. You don’t want to question your decisions every time you discover some cool new wedding detail on Pinterest.

May 4, 2015

Oh, my lovely readers, prepare to be floored by some serious pretty on this gorgeous spring morning in the Washington DC area! This sophisticated affair takes my love of barn weddings in Virginia to an entirely new level. Elegant blush and gold details meet a rustic outdoor setting for Jessica and Creigh’s vineyard nuptials. Elegant Rustic Wedding Reception in Virginia: Sara + Brett
March 24, 2015

When nature’s beauty meets rustic stylings, the result is the laid-back elegance of today’s wedding in Virginia. Sara and Brett celebrated their “I Do’s” under the dreamiest of barns! (But first: make sure you check out their traditional outdoor wedding ceremony!) Think draped curtains, string lighting, and chandeliers. Not to mention, lots of pretty (and country-fied!) floral designs! Lelia Marie Photography was behind the lens to capture every sweet moment. Aren’t we lucky!?

From Sara: My vision for my wedding was elegantly rustic. Simple beauty with natural elements. We let the natural scenery of the vineyard guide the design of the stable.

We made sure to incorporate pink and ivory pumpkins filled with tons of beautiful flowers at the center of every table surrounded by twinkle lights to make the transition of the outdoor ceremony overlooking the bright green Loudoun Valley to the stable seem seamless.

With the wedding being at a winery I wanted our guests to take home a favor that they would actually enjoy. Handmade satchels of wine mulling spices seemed perfect!

Sara’s wedding planning advice for other DC-area couples:

Take your time! You can never be too organized. Don’t pressure yourself with a short engagement. I never really understood how much time and planning was involved until I was in the middle of planning one myself.
