Elegant Winter Park Hyatt Ballroom Wedding
November 21, 2018

We love the timelessness of today’s elegant winter Park Hyatt ballroom wedding. Aurora and Anil planned a classic DC wedding that was fit for any season, but the touches of gold and emphasis on greenery really popped in December. The bridesmaids were elegant in black gowns and the groomsmen matched in their tuxedos. Bouquets of greenery and white flowers were simple but beautiful and complimented Aurora’s lace detailing on her gown. Our favorite moment was the sparkler exit from the ceremony before heading over to the Park Hyatt for the reception; this was a fun surprise when dealing with early sunsets in December! A checkerboard dance floor and tall tree-like centerpieces really transformed the ballroom of the Park Hyatt. Thank you to Love Life Images for sharing this winter DC wedding with us today!

Kate Spade Inspired DAR Wedding
July 23, 2018

Brianna and Chris planned their colorful, Kate Spade inspired wedding in Washington, DC at Daughters of the American Revolution. Brianna unfortunately and very unexpectedly was diagnoses with cancer a month before her wedding last Spring. And so their wedding was beautiful, but it was also an extremely emotional day; it was full of love and happiness as family and friends gathered together. For their wedding, they wanted it to feel fun, happy and just very “them.” A close friend officiated their wedding, which was an intimate ceremony under the portico, an area that Brianna and Chris fell in love with when touring the venue. Their heartfelt vows to one another left no dry eyes among their guests as they witnessed this special wedding ceremony.
Brianna wore a fitted lace bridal gown by Modern Trousseau. She carried a lush bouquet of white peonies and orange ranunculus. Those who know Brianna, know that she has an upbeat and infectious personality. It was only fitting that she chose a fun color palette; it included shades of orange, peach, teal, white and gray.
After the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktail hour in the DAR library. Following that, a family style dinner on two dramatic tables in the O’Byrne Gallery. One of the highlights were the Kate Spade inspired place settings, alternating peach, pink and teal plates down a dramatic table, set over a soft gray linen. Eight Tree Street floral design used high and low centerpieces down the two tables for a beautiful tablescape, leaving room for platters of delicious cuisine from Design Cuisine. Thank you to Bright Occasions for sharing this colorful wedding with us today!

Romantic Leesburg Virginia Wedding
April 9, 2018

Happy Monday! Are you guys ready for a full week of amazing DC area wedding inspiration? We are kicking off today with a romantic Riverside on the Potomac wedding. You know we love a good proposal story and so we just had to share Cory and Annie’s story!

Cory’s sister, Lauren, told Annie that she won four tickets to a dolphin show at the National Aquarium and asked the two of them to go with her. When they checked in they told them the dolphin encounter under Estrain was only for two. Cory and Annie went first. They did the usual dolphin tour and then went with the trainer to meet a Dolphin named Spirit. They were taught how to have Spirit roll, wave and dance with her flippers. She even came out of the water to kiss Annie!

At one point she thought they were playing with them for too long so she went to get Lauren and Paddy so they could have a turn. Suddenly the trainer said,”No, you have to wait because the dolphin wants to throw you a buoy!” When she turned around the dolphin had already swam across the pool, got a buoy from another trainer and flipped it up to her. She caught the buoy, turned it around and it said, “Annie, will you marry me?” She then turned around to look for Cory. He was on his knee with a beautiful ring. Just when she thought he had executed the best engagement ever, he still had something else up his sleeve. Their families were waiting in a restaurant to celebrate!

The pair were married last summer at the gorgeous Virginia wedding venue, Riverside on the Potomac. They achieved the perfect rustic romance in their chosen barn setting with the help of the team at Bright Occasions. Some of our favorite elements would have to be the four tiered nearly naked cake and the floral installation by Edge Florals. Thank you to Kate Fine Art for sharing this lovely Virginia wedding with us today!

The following DC wedding vendors contributed to this lovely Riverside on the Potomac wedding:

Wedding Planner: Bright Occasions | Photography: Kate Fine Art | Venue: Riverside on the Potomac | Florals: Edge Florals | DJ: Chris Laich | Catering: Smokin Willys | Officiant: Say I do Your Way | Videography: Kevin Joel | Beauty: Stylist to Go | Cake: Honey Bee Pastry Shop

Photography – Deb Lindsey Photography

With a background in photojournalism from 17 years as a photo editor at The Washington Post, Deb Lindsey is quite the pro! She began shooting weddings in 2001 and left her job at The Post in 2010 to concentrate on weddings full time.  Deb approaches weddings in the same way she covered news assignments. She wants to tell the whole story of the day and be as unobtrusive as she can. She looks for moments, emotion, action and details. Her ultimate goal is to create beautiful photos — clean, uncluttered images, full of love and joy and featuring natural light whenever possible. You can check out some of Deb Lindsey’s amazing work in this tropical meets urban rehearsal dinner inspiration and this spring courtyard wedding!

Floral Design – Petals & Promises

If you’re looking for stunning florals that will compliment your wedding day, look no further than Petals & Promises. Utilizing lush foliage, fruiting branches, and sumptuous blossoms, Petals and Promises gathers the finest flowers from farms around the globe. Local and seasonal flowers are resourcefully incorporated into each design. Blossoms and stems are carefully selected and then transformed into stunning arrangements, custom designed for your event. Added bonus: Lisa of Petals & Promises has an affinity for beautiful ribbon and has a collection of antique ribbons. She enjoys pairing the perfect hand dyed silk ribbon with a beautiful bespoke floral bouquet. What could be better than that!? Look at how stunning the florals are in this romantic Jane Austen wedding inspiration and this cheery and bright Virginia wedding.

Rentals – The Lighting and Sound Company

Every good wedding needs light and sound. I mean, come on, could you have an awesome dance party without killer sound?! Would your guests be able to see all of the effort you put into the design without light?! No way! The Lighting & Sound Co. is made up of designers & technicians who are incredibly passionate about quality events and forming lasting relationships with clients, and we promise your production needs will be met with nothing less than perfection. It’s their promise that we’ll always be available to answer questions, or just chat about ideas, and that they’ll arrive on time with the best equipment & crew available.

Calligraphy & Stationery – Type A Invitations

The aesthetic of your event begins with your invitation suite. It’s the first feeling your guests get for your wedding. Because of this, you want to make sure you are presenting a stunning invite. That is what Type A Invitations strives to provide you with! Based just outside of Washington, D.C., Type A Invitations has a different approach to wedding invitations. They create whatever you want, even if you don’t know what that is. That’s right, there are no books or pages that you have to flip through to hope you find “it.” They know it took long enough to lock down “the one” (you know, your fiancé). They believe that no one should have to keep swiping left when it comes to planning their dream day! We are obsessed with the work they did in this Southern charm vineyard wedding.

Swoon Worthy Arena Stage Wedding
August 9, 2017

Barbara and Alex hosted an Arena Stage wedding this past spring, and their beautiful day was a family affair that was full of love. Combined, they have 5 children who were all part of the wedding party; Barbara’s son walked her down the aisle while one of her daughters sang At Last by Etta James. Don’t miss their adorable family photo. During the ceremony, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. We can absolutely see why! Their heartfelt vows were witnessed in this special wedding ceremony. Surrounded by family and friends, these two said “I do” in a beautiful setting.

We are absolutely in love with the bride’s blush bridal gown. It was perfectly paired with a lush bouquet of seasonal white and blush blooms by B. Floral Event Design. The floral design for this wedding was to die for. We are in love! The modern architecture of Arena stage was softened by their romantic color story and décor elements. These included textured greenery, blush and gold rentals, and pink floral centerpieces. The planning team with Bright Occasions repurposed the textured greenery ceremony backdrop to display the wedding cake later in the evening! We love this double use of their backdrop. It was such a stunning element of their wedding! Being able to get versatile uses out of design elements really makes your wedding budget stretch so much further. Thank you to Lissa Ryan Photography for sharing today’s absolutely stunning Arena Stage wedding with us.

A Second Chance at Love
June 5, 2017

Get ready for one of the sweetest weddings we have ever featured on United with Love! Margaret and Gene are senior citizens who found a second chance at love later in life. Theirs was an unexpected romance, as the two were set-up via Gene’s daughter Katie, who later became Margaret’s Matron of Honor. This couple is as sweet as can be and so in love! Their wedding filled us with joy and we are really excited to share that joy with our readers today.

Margo from Bright Occasions had the pleasure of working with this couple for their DC hotel wedding at the Hay Adams.  Their wedding celebration was full of warmth, love and support from their sweet families. Margaret chose to wear a gold wedding dress complemented by her gold birdcage veil. She carried a bouquet of spring florals with a pretty palette in shades of pink, peach, blush, lavender and spring green. It is so easy for us as a wedding blog to get wrapped up in an abundance of details and décor when showcasing events but what we love the most about today’s real wedding is how absolutely happy the couple is on their big day. Thank you so much to Kate Fine Art Photography and Bright Occasions for sharing this adorable Hay Adams wedding with us today!

How To: Pick a Wedding Planner
March 2, 2017

As you know, we always suggest hiring a wedding planner when prepping for your DC area wedding celebration! Although we have some of the best wedding planners in the DC area, we wouldn’t suggest hiring one if we didn’t really mean it. Hiring a planner can be helpful in so many different ways. It can help cut down on your own stress levels, which is fantastic, but most importantly, it can allow for you and all of your friends and family members to celebrate and have a good time without worrying about a thing. You are able to focus on spending this special time with those who matter most to you. What can be better than that? We know you’re wondering how to pick a wedding planner! Have no fear, we’re here to help.

We realize that you don’t always know where to start when you being the process. Because of this, we have compiled some advice from DC area wedding professionals to help you on how to pick a wedding planner!

Sarah Culver Photography

How should I decide between the different company styles?

“Think about how the company’s brand and aesthetic matches with yours. There are planners who are experts at creating a super feminine, airy, elegant look while others are more modern, edgy and bold. Where do you envision your wedding taking place? Some planners are amazing with ballroom receptions, while others are pros with tented weddings, barns and vineyards. You should also love your planner’s personality, since you will be working together very closely over the course of a year or more!” – Sarah, Sarah Kazemburg Events

“Couples need to assess in which areas they can best use the expertise of a planner to find the best fit. If you need a planner’s design skills, then you need a planner who excels at design. If your needs are more in the logistics of the planning process and pulling your best event team together, then you should look for a planner who has excellent project management skills. I think finding the right match personality wise is important. How does the planner present him/herself at an in-person meeting and via online communication? Does it mesh with what you want out of your planner?” – Vicky, Event Accomplished

“In the DC area, we have so many talented event and wedding planners; I firmly believe there is someone for everyone. I suggest starting with the basic question of what do you most need help with?  Do you want someone with a lot of experience at different venues in the area in order to help you choose the location? Do you need someone who has a strong network of wedding professionals and can help you hire your team (photographer, caterer, etc.)? Or do you feel lost when it comes to a budget and are hoping a planner can set you on the right path? How about design for the wedding? Do you have a specific vision or are you hoping a wedding planner can help bring different ideas together? Another thing to consider when choosing a planning company is whether you want to work with an independent planner or a team of wedding planners; wedding planning companies often range from 1-5 planners in the DC area.” – Margo, Bright Occasions

What are the different fee structures? What is the difference between commission based and a flat fee?

“Our pricing is set on a sliding scale based on the overall size of the wedding, planning services needed, and budget. We offer a variety of packages from Partial Planning to Full Wedding Weekend Planning; these depend on the needs and budget of the client. If you feel that you can not afford your dream planner’s full wedding planning packages, ask if they offer design or partial planning options. Each wedding offers a unique set of challenges and vendors, so we offer custom packages to ensure we are able to properly care for our clients. ” Tabitha, Roberts & Co Events

“I believe most planners in the DC area charge a flat fee vs. commission. However, there may be planners in DC and other markets that do the opposite. Ultimately, in setting pricing, we chose to do a flat fee to cover services rendered. We felt that we would probably be doing a similar amount of work for our planning clients, regardless of their overall budget. So rather than charging a percentage or commission based on budget, we charge a flat fee based on our level of work.” – Margo, Bright Occasions

Katelyn James Photography

Does a planners design aesthetic or portfolio really matter?

“I think the most important factor in hiring a wedding planner is if you like them and you trust them. These two things are a must. Don’t worry so much about their personal design aesthetic, or if they have worked at your venue before. Determine if you want to talk to this person a hundred or so times in the next 6-12 months. Also, make sure you trust them! If so, and you are comfortable with their fee structure, hire them! If not, don’t hire them!” – Janice, Bellwether Events

“A planners design aesthetic is important to consider when choosing who you want to work with. Couples should focus on the wedding aesthetic and style represented in a planners portfolios and social media posts.  Most wedding planners curate their online presence to fall in line with the type of weddings that they excel at producing. If the wedding planner’s body of work within their website is more modern, edgy, or minimalist; they are likely not the best fit for a southern garden wedding. Also, couple’s should ensure that planners have more than just stylized photo shoots in their portfolio. While styled photo shoots are beautiful, they are not an indicator of the planner’s ability to succeed in planning your event. Look for multitudes of real weddings on the planners Facebook, Instagram, and website galleries to ensure they are seasoned in actual events.” – Tabitha, Roberts & Co Events

“I think design aesthetic and portfolio does matter to a degree. You shouldn’t choose a planner to copy another wedding they did. Alternatively, don’t discard a planner for not having exactly the wedding design of your dreams. However, it’s a great idea to get a sense of their style to see if it’s a fit with your own. If you are looking to do something more minimalistic, then a planner with really over the top designs may not be right for you.

On the other hand, if you want a very styled soiree with no detail left untouched, then you would probably connect with a planner whose work includes a lot of details. I feel personality and style are very important. While you don’t need to be best friends with your planner, you should feel comfortable working with them. And you should be on the same page when it comes to different style decisions. Ultimately, you should trust your planner to carry out your vision and manage your dream wedding day.” – Margo, Bright Occasions

“Yes, your planner’s design work should speak to you and make you feel confident they can execute your perfect wedding day!” – Sarah, Sarah Kazemburg Events

Michelle Lindsay Photography

What questions should you ask your potential planner candidates?

How does the planning process and communication work?

What is the typical wedding budget you work with?

How many weddings do you take per weekend?

Do your services focus more on planning, logistics and organization or design and creative direction?

How do you select the vendors for our wedding?

What are you favorite types of weddings to plan?

How will we communicate throughout the planning process?

How would you describe your design style?

What does a typical wedding day look like for you/us?

How far in advance do most clients book a planner?

“Most full planning clients book Bright Occasions between 10-14 months out from their wedding date. We will continue to book planning clients up to around 6 months out from their wedding. Coordination clients often book Bright Occasions for a month-of coordination service between 2-4 months out from their wedding. Since we take a limited number of weddings per weekend and month, we take coordination requests if available.” – Margo, Bright Occasions

“Full Planning: 1+ year out; Month-of/Event Management: 6 months out.” – Sarah, Sarah Kazemburg Events

And there you have it folks! Happy planning! We’ve got more Washington DC pro wedding advice and tons of local wedding vendors to help ease the process!

Incorporating the literary element of the DAR into the seating chart and guest book was a great way to bring the entire event full circle. The table lamps in the library could also be scary for some, but we love how they were incorporated into the low centerpiece style and used to accent the clean white and blue color story!

DC Whittemore House Wedding by Duhon Photography

In an effort to create a remembrance area for those who could not be present at their Whittemore House wedding; Randy and Chris created a Day of the Dead table. We often see these at weddings as the perfect way to have those we love nearby on such a special moment in the couples lives. What we love so much about theirs, are the nod to humor having prayer candles to our favorite Golden Girls anchoring the loving setup. Creating a personal tribute with a splash of humor, is what makes a memorable wedding to us!

Modern Contemporary Arena Stage Wedding by Astrid Photography

Sleek and contemporary floral arrangements by Loda Floral Designs perfectly complimented the all glass and metallic feel of Arena Stage for Eric an Michelles wedding. We love how they paired decor elements that didn’t compete with the reception, but instead elevated the already unique space to a new level of sophistication.

Elkridge Furnace Inn Brunch Wedding: Jamie + Taylor
November 30, 2016

Maryland sweethearts Jamie and Taylor planned a beautiful Maryland brunch wedding at Elkridge Furnace Inn this past spring with the help of Margo of Bright Occasions. Their garden ceremony and brunch reception was a personal and fun celebration that included Jamie and Taylor’s favorite things woven throughout. One element of brunch weddings that we enjoy are the plethora of activities, great food, and games that are often available for guests in lieu of dancing. During their cocktail hour and reception, a variety of wedding lawn games including bocce ball, croquet, ring toss, lawn darts and even a personalized corn hole set were present for their guest’s enjoyment. For dessert, in a nod to their weekly frozen yogurt date, the couple opted for an ice cream bar with their favorite toppings. Not to leave out the cake lovers, a tiered confection was topped with an adorable topper of a bride and groom skiing since they themselves are avid skiers. Coffee bean favors were given to guests to complete their brunch theme and love of coffee. All these fun personal accents really tied together the beautiful brunch wedding, and a big thank you to Brittany DeFrehn Photography for sharing this Maryland wedding with us today!
