Newseum

By far one of the most innovative and unique wedding venues, the Newseum has a plethora of options for you to choose from should this be “the one.” Perhaps you’d like to host your nuptials in the Knight Conference Center and terrace, where the breathtaking views of the US Capitol and surrounding city can be explored, or if that’s not enough, you can take over the entirety of the museum for a top-to-bottom, unforgettable extravaganza. The Newseum is happy to host Wolfgang Puck Catering, which makes for scrumptious rehearsal dinners and wedding receptions.

Toolbox

A Pilates studio isn’t always your first thought when you think perfect wedding venue but maybe it should be! With their gorgeous wood floors and exposed brick walls, we can’t help but be in awe of this space. Not only is it a Pilates studio, but it is also an art studio and so there is always fantastic decor already up on the walls. With the capacity for a seated dinner for 140 or a cocktail style reception for 250, this space is super versatile and unique!

Fathom Gallery

When choosing to wed at Fathom Gallery, you have lots of different spatial options. Inside the gallery, you will find exposed brick and local art, cultural and digital and interactive design. Love the idea of a gallery wedding but want an outdoor ceremony? They have a roof deck with lush greenery and budding pear trees! You can also host your reception on their grounds after holding your ceremony in any of DC’s amazing churches.

Sonoma

We love the vibe at Sonoma Restaurant and Wine Bar with their modern chic interior and low lighting. They have a wide variety of spaces to choose from that will fit in with your wedding aesthetic whether it is a small and intimate affair or a larger 200 guest reception! And don’t get even us started on the food! With tons of options that range from brunch to dinner, you can’t go wrong with any of their seasonal meal choices. Yummm, now we’re hungry!

One Eight Distilling

Named for Article One Section Eight of the constitution (which provided the establishment of a district to serve as the nation’s capital), this unique venue is an actual distillery that produces spirits with locally sourced ingredients. They strive to combine the time-honored traditions of distilling with modern innovation. Their stylish facilities accommodate upwards of 300 guests and can bring a modern rustic feel to your big day! Plus, how many people can say they got married at a distillery? How unique!

Nationals Park Wedding Portraits Dani Leigh Photography (18)

Nationals Park

The home of the Washington Nationals can make for an incredibly fun and whimsical wedding venue. You can have the wedding ceremony behind home plate and treat your guests to batting practice in the cages during cocktail hour or the reception! Don’t forget about the Racing Presidents! If you’re lucky, they might even stop by to say hello. You don’t necessarily need to utilize a baseball theme to host your wedding here; you can still maintain an elegant aesthetic while hosting your big day in a unique space like this one!

Arena Stage

This theater hosts a plethora of productions that focus on the American spirit. What could be better for a wedding in the nation’s capital?! This unconventional venue can help you to create a theatrical event that you (and your guests) will never forget! Wed in their intimate Kogod Cradle and have breezy cocktails on their rooftop terrace. With their amazing views of the waterfront in the Grand Lobby and Molly Smith Study you can set a dramatic tone for your reception. We can’t get enough of this multipurpose venue.

corradetti_glassblowing_venue_baltimore

Corradetti

Corradetti Glassblowing Studio & Gallery

Nestled in the heart of historic Clipper Mill in Baltimore, this Glassblowing studio and gallery is the perfect space for your special day! Corradetti boasts 3,300 square feet in their studio, complete with bamboo hardwood floors, exposed brick, and high ceilings that creates a contemporary design plan infused with old world charm. The gallery side of the space includes vibrant blown glass artwork that has all been made on site which creates an original ambiance that can’t be easily recreated anywhere else.

Pinstripes

The idea of getting married in a bowling alley doesn’t immediately scream class, but Pinstripes is not your average bowling alley. They don’t serve hot dogs for $1.00 and pitchers of beer. This unconventional venue has a beautifully appointed ballroom, a private event entrance, and beautiful reception rooms that create an intimate experience. Picturesque views of the C&L Canal, luxurious bowling lanes, bocce courts, and a cozy outdoor fire pit allow couples to craft an unforgettable and completely unique (and not to mention fun!) wedding celebration. Oh and we can’t forget to mention that their food and drink are definitely a far cry from the bowling alleys you’re used to!

2941

This hidden gem is located in Virginia and boasts lush landscaping, koi ponds, waterfalls, world-class artwork, and a lakeside view. What more could you want for your wedding? Oh wait fantastic food! Because 2941 is first and foremost a restaurant, you know that they will provide you with some amazing sips, bites, and full meals that truly are works of art.

Hill Country

This unique rustic venue is one of our favorites because Hill Country is first and foremost, a barbecue restaurant. With its long sharing tables and electric, fun atmosphere, Hill Country is a relaxed alternative to grand ballroom settings. Choose from all of your BBQ favorites including brisket, ribs, pulled pork, and more and don’t forget all the fixins! Have them as sides or as hors d’oeuvres.

The Market at Grelen

We love this Virginia wedding venue for its 360-degree mountain views, luscious gardens, and locally sourced food. The grounds include an expansive Stone Terrace, a lawn overlooking berry fields, a Greenhouse filled with seasonal plants, and a gorgeous Orchard Overlook Tent.  All of these areas capture the natural beauty of the surrounding nursery while maintaining a simple yet elegant aesthetic. What a perfect setting to celebrate your love!

Murray Hill

Not your typical barn wedding setting, Murray Hill elevates the rustic feel that often comes with this type of wedding venue. This fifty-even acre estate overlooks the Potomac River and the Catoctin Mountains and features a stone manor residence with charming antiques and glowing fireplaces. With a beautiful outdoor garden and pool, you even have space that is perfect for cocktail hour. The barn is open on one side to a large green space that makes it perfect for lawn games, vintage furniture, and lounging while the interior is a blank canvas that you are able to completely transform to create the vision you want for your big day!

Springfield Manor

Springfield Manor Winery & Distillery truly is a versatile venue in that they have two distinct spaces that convey very different vibes. With an elegant ballroom and terrace, the large venue can accommodate a large number of guests up to 299! Their barn, however, is one of our favorites! It has rustic beams and beautiful farm tables that create a romantic setting and the glass panel doors expand the view and allow for a flow onto the adjoining patio.

Woodend Sanctuary and Mansion

President Lincoln’s Cottage

This historic venue provides many different packages that are perfect for your wedding! Their veranda provides a historic and memorable setting for intimate weddings. The use of the indoor space is incredibly beautiful as well. Depending on the package chosen, you can utilize the Cottage, the Education Center or both!

W Hotel There are many great rooms at the W Hotel that you can choose for your reception or rehearsal dinner, but we love the Altitude Room and POV, the hotel’s rooftop lounge complete with stylish decor and city views. Take in the Washington Monument from any of the floor to ceiling windows while sipping on a delicious cocktail in this swanky environment.

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) This historic landmark boasts an array of beautiful spaces for a wide variety of events. With its views of the Washington Monument on the portico, and its indoor elegance and character in O’Byrne Gallery, this space makes for a memorable wedding venue. The Connecticut Board Room overlooks the White House Ellipse and would make for a beautifully intimate rehearsal dinner space with its gold-leaf moldings and crystal chandeliers.

6 Unconventional Wedding Venues in DC
November 5, 2014

One of the hardest parts of having a wedding in Washington DC is that there is just too much choice! This is so true for finding a wedding venue. There are countless locations and unique spots to have your wedding. In addition to the number of options for wedding venues in DC is also the cost. Finding a wedding venue that fits your needs and your budget is not as easy as you might think. Sarah, owner of Pollyanna Events, has done research for a few clients and she is sharing it with us! She researched unconventional wedding venues in Washington DC that you might not have necessarily thought of as wedding venues. You know, those non-traditional type of spots! The best part of her list is that these are all wedding venues that fall between the $2,500-$9,000 price tag. So, now you can find a wedding venue and stay on budget! Take it away, Sarah…

Washington DC can have a reputation of being quite expensive and mainstream when it comes to weddings, but does it really have to be? I pondered this after being asked by many of my clients if an offbeat wedding venue for a decent price existed. I decided to take on the challenge. I mean, after all, the venue is one of the most important parts in planning a wedding, so it has to be perfect!

There are endless options for your typical DC venues such as monuments, museums, historic buildings, or buildings with political significance that are beautiful venues for weddings, but many of these locations can be upwards of $12,000 (or more)! For some of you, that may be half your wedding budget. The venues you don’t often hear people talk about are unconventional, those off the beaten path that might not be typical for a wedding in DC. I’ve compiled a list of a few locations you may not have thought existed in DC. like lofty, industrial spaces filled with character that a couple who wants a unique setting, may be searching for.

Here is a list of pretty awesome wedding venues in DC that are affordable, unconventional and off the beaten path:

Loft at 600 F

Thank you so much, Sarah for your list of unconventional venues! Hopefully you’ll be back to check a few of these spaces out and find an affordable wedding venue along the way. Be sure to check Sarah out at Pollyanna Events.

Favorite Affordable Venues in the DC Area
August 22, 2013

I saved the best for last! Although, now that we are at the end of our Washington DC area wedding venue search series it means that summer is coming to an end. How sad?! That’s OK though, we love a good fall wedding in the DC area around here too! Today, we are talking budget and venues. These are the best wedding venues within the “affordable” category. I know that what is and isn’t affordable is different for each couple. So, for the purposes of this post we asked a few of the best wedding planners in the DC area their favorite affordable venues and gave them a criteria of 120 guests for a total wedding budget of $20,000 or less. (The average cost of a wedding in the DC area is around $35,000 and the average size guest list is little bit over 100 guests, so that’s how we got to 120 guests for $20,000.)

I know it can seem hard to have a wedding in the DC area for this price range and this guest list size, but the truth is that it can be done and it is done all the time – quite beautifully, might I add! (And, couples are married for a lot less than this too!) If you are on a strict budget in the DC area, you need be creative and spend money only on the things that matter the most to you and skip the rest! (Check out our list of 10 things to skip to save money on a DC area wedding!)

In addition, to the standard advice of getting married on a Friday in the off-season or having a brunch instead of a sit-down dinner, there are a few other things you can do to find an affordable wedding venue in the DC area. You will want to look for venues that have a very low rental fee, such as parks and government-owned spaces. Luckily, the DC area is home to many of these venue options! You can also look for venues that offer a lot for your money, so venues that are all-inclusive and whose rental fee includes tables, chairs, linens and perhaps even, food. In this case, the less you have to bring in the better and the more affordable! Also, venues that allow you to bring in your own alcohol are great options, because it is generally cheaper to buy your own booze.

Here is what the wedding planners in DC had to say about their favorite affordable wedding venues in the DC area…

“With a budget of $20K, the Washington Navy Yard Catering and Conference Center in Washington, DC is a great choice. The food is phenomenal and for around $50 per person your client can enjoy plated service, champagne toast, wine served with dinner, and a wedding cake. The staff is great there and the food is great also.”  Tara, owner of Perfect Planning

“Our favorite budget location in Washington, DC is Stroga in Adams Morgan. Stroga has beautiful bones and a cost effective price.”  Cindy, from A. Dominick Events

  • Also on United With Love: Real weddings at Stroga

“I love the Arts Club of Washington in Washington, DC, as it is gives back to the community! The food is great and they are super flexible with everything there. They have their own tables, chairs and linens. Plus, I got married there!”  Katie, owner of Elegance & Simplicity

“Hands down, the answer to this is St. Francis Hall in Washington, DC. It truly is a hidden gem in DC! It is big enough to accommodate 200 guests, a band and a dance floor. It has a ton of free parking in the area, and it has tables and chairs on site. Plus, it is very pretty!”   Janice, owner of Bellwether Events

  • Also on United With Love: Real weddings at St. Francis Hall

“The Mount Vernon Inn in Mount Vernon, Virginia. The price for this property is beyond reasonable, and couples get so much for the money. Plus, the venue is charming enough that minimal additional decor is required. It’s probably my number one recommendation for couples on a budget.”  Stephanie, owner of Pretty Entertaining

“I love Jefferson Patterson Park in St. Leonard, Maryland. The rental fee for 120 guests would be $650! Plus, it already has picnic tables included!”  Rebecca, from Blue Canary Events

“Oxon Hill Manor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. It has a reasonable rental fee, which includes tables and chairs. You can bring your own alcohol and any caterer as well.”  Courtney, owner of A Sweet Soiree

  • Also on United With Love: Real weddings at Oxon Hill Manor

“The Bolger Conference Center in Potomac, Maryland offers great prices on rentals, catering and alcohol packages. There are also hotel rooms on-site and a bar for your after-party!”  Janice, owner of Bellwether Events

  • Also on United With Love: Real weddings at the Bolger Center

“The Middleburg Community Center in Middleburg, VA. It’s really affordable and there is a built-in stage, high ceiling, a cute patio, and the rental fee includes tables and chairs”   Vicky, owner of Event Accomplished

A few votes for NMWA…

“National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC. The museum’s relatively neutral color scheme makes it a blank canvas to work with when designing decor. It has a stately, elegant feel and guests can enjoy perusing the galleries during the event should they wish.”  from Teresa at Rex & Regina Events

“National Museum of Women in the Arts. There are very few places in the city that you dine with Frida! Katie, owner of Elegance & Simplicity

“National Museum of Women in the Arts. It is a beautiful space that isn’t too massive .” Laura, owner of Engaging Affairs

“National Museum of Women in the Arts. The combined grandeur and versatility of the space are unparalleled.” – from Elizabeth, owner of Elizabeth Duncan Events

And two for the Newseum…

“The Newseum in Washington, DC. Their skyline views of DC and the Capitol Building are the best! And catering by Wolfgang Puck makes for a super culinary experience.”  Courtney, owner of A Sweet Soiree

“The Newseum. The view, the terrace, the contemporary space, and delicious food from Wolfgang Puck Catering all make this a great venue.”  Vicky, owner of Event Accomplished

“Baltimore Museum of Industry Even though it is a very cold and industrial place, I have done of my prettiest weddings there. It’s a challenge to soften the space and make it beautiful but it’s so worth it!” – Diana, owner of eventi planning & design

  • See on United With Love: Real weddings at the Baltimore Museum of Industry

“Baltimore is the city for awesome museum venues! Baltimore Museum of Industry, The Walters Art Museum, B&O Railroad Museum, and, of course, American Visionary Art Museum!”  – from Rebecca at Blue Canary Events

“My favorite museum by far is the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD. I adore its weird and quirky barn and first floor space for the ceremony. On the third floor you have a huge blank canvas with exposed brick and a somewhat industrial/loft-life vibe so your reception can have any design or decor you want.” – from Janice, owner of Bellwether Events

heart-2

George Washington Masonic Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia. This location has so many unique places inside to host ceremonies and receptions; the staff is phenomenal; you can be very creative in the space for decor setup; it is located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria providing your guests with history and provides easy access to the City and other areas within the metropolitan area.”  Tara, owner of Perfect Planning

Favorite Non-Traditional Wedding Venues in DC Area
August 8, 2013

Time for the fun stuff! Next up in our Washington DC area wedding venue search series are the non-traditional wedding venues – the ones you might not know about or haven’t thought of as a possible wedding venue. Basically, the wedding venues that aren’t your typical hotel ballroom. We asked a few of the best wedding planners in the DC area their opinion. What are their favorite not-so-typical wedding venues in the DC area? Where do they tell their clients who want a non-traditional wedding to check out? Here’s what they had to say…

“The Mead Center for American Theater (Arena Stage) in Washington, DC. The library space offers more rustic wooden columns set along the modern glass walls.” – from Cindy at A. Dominick Events

“When I first heard about Stroga Yoga in Adams Morgan in Washington, DC as a special event venue, I was skeptical. But once I saw it in person, I could see the immense potential. Yes, there are challenges, like the caterer’s area and the parking, but it also has a ton of character if you are looking for a venue that is more off-beat.” – from Janice, owner of Bellwether Events

“Powerhouse (in Georgetown in Washington, DC) is now tops on my list in terms of non-traditional spaces. It is urban and chic and the exposed brick is a neutral foundation for designing decor.” – from Teresa at Rex & Regina Events

“L2 Lounge in Washington, DC was host to a wedding we planned last year and it was such an unexpected treat that guests really loved. It is tucked away in a secret corner of Georgetown near Kafe Leopold, which also does the catering for the evening. It has four smaller rooms, which allow for each one to feel like a unique part of the evening from dinner to dancing and the ceremony. The lounge-club feel gives weddings a touch of sexy while also still being modern and fun.”  from Tabitha at Roberts & Co. Events

“Clarendon Ballroom in Arlington, VA. I have seen some really spectacular events at the Clarendon Ballroom. Everyone thinks it is just a nightclub, but the chef there is fantastic, the staff (different than nightclub) is professional and attentive, and it really takes guests by surprise when they see an 80-inch mahogany bar built-in! Also great acoustics for entertainment!” – from Amanda at Engaging Affairs

“George Washington Masonic Memorial. It’s sits at the top of the hill in Alexandria, Virginia but for whatever reason people never know what the building is. And once they find out the can tour the upper observation deck and lookout over Alexandria, they are pleasantly surprised.” – from Courtney at A Sweet Soiree

“I do love weddings at home if the space allows. There is so much flexibility.” – from Vicky, owner of Event Accomplished

“Patapsco Female Institute in Ellicott City, MD. Talk about unusual venues – it’s an old girl’s school, except it’s really the ruins of it! The walls are (mainly) still all there, but not the roof! You’re completely open air (although it can be tented), and there are actual rooms – just no ceiling on those rooms! Gorgeous trees all around, a huge front marble staircase, and about a million ways you can set it up!” – from Rebecca at Blue Canary Events

“Charlie Palmer Steakhouse (The rooftop at 101 Constitution). Who would have guessed that the top of an office building would be an ideal setting for a wedding, but the incredible view of the DC skyline and the fabulous team at Charlie Palmer Steak make it a top choice.” – from Elizabeth, owner of Elizabeth Duncan Events

“Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, DC. It is surprisingly elegant for a scientific building!” – from Laura at Engaging Affair

“The Bumper Car Pavilion at  Glen Echo Park in Glen Echo, Maryland. This venue is relatively affordable and it can easily be made elegant, whimsical, you name it. The other really great benefit of having a wedding at Glen Echo is the tremendous number of great photo ops. The various building exteriors offer lots of unique options, and of course the streetcar and the carousel are both wonderful as well.”  from Stephanie, owner of Pretty Entertaining

“In Arlington, Virginia, The Hendry House is a gem of venue that people don’t seem to be aware of. This sweet craftsman home is tucked away in a North Arlington park and has beautiful grounds that can accommodate anywhere from an intimate party of 40 in the house to 200 when a tent is used on the grounds.” –  Sara, owner of Bella Note

“I planned a wedding at Nationals Park in Washington, DC. It was a non-traditional venue to say the least. The wedding ceremony was done just behind home plate, with fireworks on the Jumbotron when it was over. The cocktail hour included guests taking batting practice in the batting cages. And the Racing Presidents visited us during dancing. It was unforgettable!” – from Janice, owner of Bellwether Events

Favorite Historic House or Library Wedding Venues in the DC Area
July 23, 2013

Sure, the DC area has its fair share of hotels and vineyards, but it is the nation’s capital, after all! We live in a historic area, so naturally there are many manors, houses, libraries and otherwise historic wedding venues in the Washington DC area to choose from when planning your wedding. You don’t have to be a history buff though to love the idea of a wedding set at a charming manor house or library!  To go along with our DC area wedding venue search series this summer, I asked our amazing crew of wedding planners what is their favorite historic house, manor or library wedding venue in the DC area. Here is what they had to say…

“The Carnegie Library at Mt. Vernon Square in Washington, DC. I love it’s beautiful Washington DC architecture, it’s extremely versatile with many options for set-ups. It’s in a great location and the staff is wonderful to work with.” – from Margo, owner of Bright Occasions

“Decatur House on Layfayette Square in Washington, DC. The renovations are stunning and provide a clean backdrop for any decor. The Decatur House allows for a very unique outdoor experience so close to the White House.” – from Cindy at A. Dominick Events

“Decatur House on Layfayette Square in Washington, DC. They recently renovated and it is one of the easiest and most versatile locations in DC proper. It has a museum, a carriage house with enough room for sit-down reception along with a courtyard which is perfect for tenting. You walk outside and the White House is there! Does not get much more DC than that! – Katie, owner of Elegance & Simplicity

“Meridian House in Washington, DC. It has beautiful outdoor gardens, but also a lovely indoor option. I adore the gardens, outside patio, and the different look of the rooms in the house. It allows couples a lot of versatility with their design! – from the ladies at Engaging Affairs

“Meridian House in Washington, DC. It is a DC staple and its Linden Grove is just super special! They have tables and chairs already on-site, which is a huge help and with the right headcount the flow of the event can work really well.” – from Laura, at Events in the City

“Meridian House in Washington, DC. It is one of my favorite locations in the area. The house has stunning, high ceilinged rooms that are beautifully laid out, which are wonderfully complimented by the Linden Grove and gardens in the back. Tenting the garden makes excellent use of that space, but just using the indoors of the house (perfect for an intimate winter wedding) is a great option as well. I love the variety of options that Meridian House provides for couples getting married there! –  Sara, owner of Bella Notte

“There are so many in this area – DAR, Decatur House, Josephine Butler Center, Dumbarton House and Peabody Library to name a few. I will have to go with Meridian House as my favorite. The Linden Grove is just so cool!” – from Janice, owner of Bellwether Events

“I am in love with the Dumbarton House in Washington, DC. One of my favorite events over the years was an al fresco dinner on the slate patio without a tent. Guests enjoyed the architecture of the historic home while being able to have dinner in a cool fall evening. The backyard of the home is perfect for an intimate ceremony with minimal decor needed since the house is beautiful in its own right.”  from Tabitha at Roberts & Co. Events

“Dumbarton House in Washington, DC. It is an ideal setting for a garden wedding.” – from Elizabeth, owner of Elizabeth Duncan Events

  • Also on United With Love: Real weddings at the Dumbarton House

“I just love Oxon Hill Manor in Maryland. I love the area around the house, from the fountain to the gardens to the huge patio. I love the inside as well! It has a gorgeous bridal room and beautiful marble floors. Plus, it’s so close to National Harbor, so out of town guests can stay close by!”  – from Rebecca at Blue Canary Events

“Thomas Birkby House in Leesburg, Virginia. I love the Birkby House for a few reasons: First, it’s an historic property and it has the expected beauty and charm in spades. Second, the owners have clearly given a lot of thought to how best to use the property’s space. Everything flows well and is easy to use. Third, the owners and staff are professional and accommodating.”  from Stephanie, owner of Pretty Entertaining

“The George Peabody Library in Baltimore, Maryland. It technically can accommodate up to 200 but 150 is more comfortable. The space is jaw dropping! As everyone makes their way into the reception from the cocktail hour, I love to stand at the entrance and listen as guests as they are shocked and wowed by the beauty of the space.” – Diana, owner of eventi planning & design
