Flower Girls and Ring Bearer Photo Inspiration
March 21, 2019

We all know that sometimes ring bearers and flower girls can steal the show as they walk (or run, or scoot, or crawl) down the aisle. They’re just too darn adorable! These days there are so many options for your flower girls and ring bearers. Traditionally, flower girls carry buckets of petals to toss as they head down the aisle; ring beareres carry a pillow or box with the wedding bands in them. But what else can they do or wear? We asked some of our favorite DC area wedding photographers to give us their best flower girl and ring bearer photo inspiration. Personally we love when they’re carrying signs or small versions of the bridal bouquet. Then again, we do love a good tradition. Either way, you can’t go wrong. We hope they brighten your day as much as they did ours!

Elegant Spring Courtyard Wedding in Alexandria: Katie + James
December 23, 2015

Katie and James had a very personal wedding with lots of family-made DIY details in the courtyard of the elegant Hotel Monaco Alexandria in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, VA. Their wedding in Virginia was planned by the talented, Bellwether Events, who the bride credits to much of the success of their big day! Their outdoor wedding ceremony was filled with special moments, including the bride’s nephews coming down the aisle with cute flags to wave to the crowd. Then at their wedding reception, the details kept coming! Dinner was held outdoors in a beautiful courtyard where rustic wedding flowers flanked the tables and custom table numbers, designed by the groom and assembled by the bride’s family, made the space picture-perfect. The idea was that each table number represented the age of the bride or groom in the corresponding photo – so cute! The bride’s mom also helped to create the most darling adirondack chair escort cards, a nod to the bride’s upbringing in upstate New York. Even the wedding favors had a flair from the bride’s past! There were so many pretty and personal details to enjoy in their big day, I just can’t begin to pick a favorite! A special thanks to Washington DC area wedding photographer, Deb Lindsey, for sharing James and Katie’s oh-so personal wedding in Alexandria, Virginia!

From the bride: Honestly, the main vision I had in mind for our wedding was everyone (me, James, our families and close friends) having the best time ever. I remember saying time and time again during the wedding planning process was that I just want our wedding to be fun!  I knew I wanted a spring wedding as I think Washington DC springs are so pretty, and did not want to deal with the heat and humidity of the summer in DC! Once we set our spring wedding date, I started looking into color themes and really loved the grey tone paired with pink and coral, so that became the base from which we worked out a lot of the other color and wedding theme details.

The more we got into the wedding planning with our wedding planning Janice at Bellwether Events, the more I really enjoyed adding in DIY touches here and there where we could to really make it personal and give our wedding a more intimate feel.

In terms of wedding photography, we knew how important the wedding photos would be not only in the immediate sense, but in the long term. We wanted someone who took great photos, but also took interesting and unique wedding day photos. Something that wasn’t just your standard wedding photo! We were so, so happy to have our wedding photographer, Deb Lindsey, with us on our wedding day. Not only did the photos come out just wonderful, she was so easy-going and really made us feel at ease from our wedding engagement shoot all the way through to the end of our wedding day!

I think one of my favorite wedding memories were the little flag signs that my two youngest nephews carried out during the ceremony. My mom made them and they loved them!

ring-bearer-signs-virginia-wedding-Deb-Lindsey-Photography outdoor-weddings-virginia-wedding-Deb-Lindsey-Photography

It was very hot during our bride and groom and bridal party photo session before the wedding ceremony, and by the time we got back to the Hotel Monaco, I was so hot and dehydrated. I felt a bit like I was going to pass out. It’s silly to think back on now as I had almost everyone fretting over me – my maid of honor, my wedding planner, my mom, my brothers, the hotel staff and more. Everyone started walking out as the wedding ceremony began and eventually it was time for my dad and me to walk out down the aisle. I remember still feeling very faint (probably a bit of nerves, as well!) and my dad squeezed my arm as we were about to walk out and whispered in my ear, “Alright, this will be just like the Kentucky Derby. Before you know, you’ll blink and it’ll be over” It really put me at ease and that feeling only continued as the wedding ceremony continued. As we started saying our wedding vows, I saw James choke up at one point. I remember I immediately felt better! Like it was just him and me standing up there alone having a moment. After that, I was just on a cloud for the rest of the night!

We had several handmade and DIY wedding details that really made me happy to see on our wedding day. My mom is a retired teacher and thank goodness she still has that crafty gene in her! Many of the wedding DIY details came as a result of her suggestions. On top of that, James is a designer and he made our Save the Date invitations, along with several other details that we easily would have had to spend money on, like our table numbers a the reception. We decided to pick old photos of ourselves at the age of the corresponding table number. James designed the layout of the photos and then my mom, sisters-in-law and myself all assembled them.

Outside of everyone having fun, I’d say our main wedding priorities were a band and photography. We knew from the get-go we wanted a band and we spent a lot of time and energy on finding a great match that not only worked budget-wise, but would have a vast selection of songs and genre options to make sure everyone (from little nephews to parents!) would be on the dance floor dancing! Playlist, our wedding band, was an amazing addition to the wedding reception and we could not have been happier with their performance.

The second awesome memory from our wedding night is of my nephew dancing and singing his little heart out! Leading up to the wedding he had made it very known that he not only wanted to attend the wedding reception, but that he would stay up until the very end. I can’t even remember if he did make it to the end of the night, but I do remember him being handed the microphone by a member of the band and singing the song while a crowd circled around him dancing. It was such a fun moment and set a nice tone for dancing for the rest of the night!

wedding-dances-virginia-wedding-Deb-Lindsey-Photography

We also had a cute, little wedding favor that was a nice reminder of my hometown in upstate New York. We gave every wedding guest a little bottle of maple syrup that my mom, again, assembled from the local maple syrup farm.

Advice from the bride for other Washington DC area couples:

My wedding advice would be to look into and invest in a wedding planner if you feel as though it’d put you at ease during the process. Everyone always says that the ‘being engaged’ part goes by so quickly because you become so busy with wedding planning and I’d have to agree. We were so lucky to have our wedding planning (Janice at Bellwether Events) throughout the wedding planning process. Beyond just giving me a bit more time to step back and enjoy being engaged and excited for my upcoming wedding, she provided us with so many suggestions and ideas that I honestly can’t imagine not being in our wedding.

Lastly, don’t sweat the small stuff. Something that may seem big at the time might actually be quite small when you look back on the wedding day. I can’t even tell you how many things I just plain forgot to do that seemed like big deals to me at the time, but at the end of the day, I was still married to James and got to spend our wedding day with everyone I loved. That is the biggest detail there can be!

Just relax and enjoy the ride. It’ll be over before you know it!

Bright and Cheerful Spring Wedding Ceremony in Virginia: Sarah + David
November 9, 2015

It was kind of a gloomy, rainy weekend here in the Washington DC area, but today’s featured wedding in Virginia is anything but gloomy, as it is a wedding celebration of bright colors with even bigger smiles! Sarah and David wanted a simple and stress free Washington DC area wedding filled with love and laughter and they got just that! With the help of their wedding planner, Simplicity Events by Johanna, many of their details were taken care off, allowing the couple to relax on their wedding day. Selecting the Airlie Center as their wedding venue, in Warrenton, Virginia, a place where they could hold all of their wedding events in one location, made for easy maneuvering and simple solutions to their big day dilemmas. The groom also got involved in the wedding planning process of this big day, which you know we love! Their wedding color palette of navy blue and bright yellow was selected in part, because blue is David’s favorite color. The colors pop in the indoor wedding ceremony, which was designed with the feeling of a garden inside. The bride and groom looked stunning when they said “I do” as the little ring bearers announced them as husband and wife! A special thanks to their Washington DC area wedding photographer, Lelia Marie Photography, for sharing Sarah and David’s bright and cheerful big day with us!

From the bride: I wanted our big day to be very simple. I don’t love over the top, crazy fancy events where you feel like you can’t touch anything or you’ll mess it up. I wanted a laid back atmosphere for our wedding that still felt elegant. Blue is our favorite color, so we decided on blue with accents of yellow to brighten the color palette for our spring wedding.

The most important thing to me for our wedding was my bridal dress. It was really the only thing that I was worried about making a decision on. I wanted to make sure it was perfect. As for everything else, it was a pretty laid back process. i mostly wanted to make sure that my guests would be comfortable and that they would have a great time enjoying the events that weekend. We chose Airlie specifically because they could accommodate all of our guests and and hold our rehearsal dinner, ceremony, cocktail hour and reception all in the same location.

We chose to splurge on a beautiful string quartet for the wedding ceremony and cocktail hour and it made my husband so happy – it was worth it! It really added something extra to have live music for the wedding ceremony. {Editor’s note: Read our recent advice article on having string musicians at your wedding ceremony. } We also splurged on plantable wedding invitations. They were seed paper that you could plant and they grow wild flowers. I know a lot of my wedding guests thought it was very neat and planted them in their spring gardens.

Fun and Colorful Spring Wedding Ceremony in Maryland: Jennifer + Brock
June 29, 2015

If you are in the mood for a bright and sunny Monday morning, then you’ve come to the right place! Jennifer and Brock said “I do” in a beautiful pink and coral colored garden wedding ceremony in Maryland at the lovely Overhills Mansion. Their sweet wedding vows were certainly a highlight for this couple and we can’t get enough of the bride’s blushing smile that expresses their joy! Jennifer and Brock’s springtime wedding was filled with tons of light, color and fabulous DIY wedding details, but it was the moments between loved ones that the pair cherish the most from their wedding day. The colorful details, including a brightly colored bridal bouquet scream “celebration” as their big wedding day got underway! Britney Clause Photography did a beautiful job capturing each and every eye popping picture – thanks for sharing them with us!

From Jennifer: Our main wedding day priorities were for our wedding guests to have a great time, and for us to feel like the whole wedding really fit us personally. I am obsessed with pictures, so getting the right wedding photographer to capture our day was a must. We loved Britney’s ability to capture bold color and subtle light, and we wanted to work with her so badly that we consulted her calendar even before booking our wedding venue!

We are so glad we did a “first look” on our wedding day. It was really nice to have that time, just the two of us, to be excited about all the fun we were already having and all the excitement that was to come. All on our wedding day, we were just in awe of all the love surrounding us.

We were going for a fun, vibrant, elegant, backyard feel for our wedding. We wanted the wedding ceremony to feel very personal and relaxed, and be full of joy, laughter, and sincerity. For the wedding look, we wanted bright, saturated color, beautiful spring foliage and light, and an easygoing vibe.

coral-wedding-colors-maryland-wedding-Britney Clause-Photography garden-weddings-maryland-wedding-Britney Clause-Photography

To our surprise (given that we focused so much attention on the wedding reception in all our months of planning), the wedding ceremony was our favorite part. It was so sweet and heartfelt, from the ring bearer (my one-year-old nephew) coming down the aisle in a wagon, to our officiant recognizing the many wonderful people that have become a part of our lives over the years and the many places we have called home, to the specially selected poems we read and the wedding vows we surprised each other with. My favorite wedding day moment was when Brock choked up a little while reading his very sweet vows (though Brock is embarrassed by this!).

Sweet and Personal Spring Virginia Wedding Ceremony: April + John
February 20, 2013

Anybody feeling a little spring in their step as we inch closer and closer to March!? No? Well, I’m just going help you along today with this Virginia wedding from Kristen Gardner Photography. While April and John got married in September, the bright and punchy yellows they used will have you looking ahead to warmer months! But my most favorite thing about part one of this wedding day? The history behind April’s look. That dress? It’s her mother’s wedding dress, re-worked into modern day style. That veil? Her grandmother hand sewed it. Forget the yellow, that’s enough to put a spring in your step right there alone! And, come back in a little bit to see their reception.

Yellow Wedding Shoes

From April: I knew that I wanted lots of yellow (it’s my favorite color) and a beautiful outdoor ceremony. We had originally planned on a winter wedding and my fiancee wanted a city wedding, but we compromised on the history and elegance of Rosemont Manor. That allowed me to have yellow, a relaxed outdoor ceremony along with a beautiful historic building.

One of my absolute favorite things was my wedding dress and my veil. I wore my mom’s wedding dress, but we recreated it and made it modern. It was so special to wear her dress, but to also make it my own. My grandmother, who made my mom’s veil, also sewed my veil by hand – it was beautiful! I also wore my great-grandmother’s blue opal ring as my “something blue”.  John wore his late grandfathers cuff links.

My all-time favorite detail from the wedding were my bright yellow shoes!

My mom and I made all the paper cones for the flower petal toss at the end of the ceremony (which was so much fun to walk out to) and all the ceremony programs (handheld fans).

As part of the wedding ceremony, we had a ring blessing ceremony. We passed the rings through the congregation so that everyone could say a personal blessing or prayer over the rings. It is so great to look at our wedding rings and to know that they are filled with the well wished of our family and friends.

Purple and Green Spring Wedding in Virginia: Jessica + Jim
June 13, 2011

Happy Monday everyone! Today’s wedding has me wistfully thinking of spring and beautiful spring flowers.  Jessica and Jim were married last spring at the Stonewall Golf Club in Manassas, Virginia and chose a purple and green color palette perfect for their wedding season, all photographed by Amie Otto Photography.  Isn’t Jessica the most adorable bride?  I love the giant smile and pure joy on her face during the first look session below.  So cute!

From Jessica: I didn’t really have a plan or theme in mind when I started planning.  I knew I wanted an outdoor spring wedding and that was pretty much it.  Green and purple are my favorite colors and they complement each other well so they became the beginings of my color palette.  The whole thing just kinda fell into place on its own.

Jessica and Jim’s first look session is just so totally adorable¦ and it also happens to be one of Jessica’s favorite memories from the day!

I loved our first look moment that Amie Otto orchestrated.  It was a lovely moment between us before the ceremony and helped to calm our nerves about the day.

We incorporated a few personal details into the wedding.  My mom let me borrow her jewelry, which was lovely and simple (my taste).  The DJ played a good mix of music that included salsa and merengue to please all of my Puerto Rican Relatives who came from the island.

Our wishing tree was my favorite detail from the wedding.  I got the idea from a wedding website and made it my own.  I am happy to say that the tree is still alive, which is amazing since I tend to kill most plants that cross my path.  I also love how our cake looked.  EVERYONE cautioned us against having a chocolate cake.  I am so glad I stuck to my guns and just went for it. Not only did it look lovely but it tasted even better.

I couldn’t agree more with Jessica her chocolate cake by Wanda’s Cakes is absolutely stunning!  I love the floral accents incorporating purple anemones.

Jessica’s advice for other DC-area couples: Go with your gut.  Only you know what you like, so don’t let others try to talk you out of something you want for your day… or worse, talk you INTO something you don’t need.  Give yourself time to shop around and find the best vendors who can work with your budget.  You want to find those creative thinkers who are willing to work with you.  For example I found my flower vendor last and saw many different florists before I finally decided.  I am soooooo glad I found Linda and I was so impressed with how everything looked on the day.

Wedding Ring Shots: Part One
January 20, 2011

In honor of all those pretty engagement rings that were gifted over the holidays and will come in the next few weeks for Valentine’s Day, here are a few of our favorite ring shots from photographers in DC, MD and VA.  Ring photographs are something fun for the couple, a unique expression of their unity.  And, ring shots are a creative outlet for photographers when shooting a wedding, a chance for them to do something different.  I had a blast looking through the submissions and was loving all the creativity.
