Blushingly Romantic Leesburg Ballroom Wedding
March 27, 2017

Today’s sweet and romantic wedding is one that began with a beautiful love story. Emily and Stephen met in high school and 10 years and two kids later declared their love for each other at the stunning Landsdowne Resort in Virginia. We love the pretty in pink textured florals and the bride’s light and airy blush gown. Some of our favorite wedding day details included the bridesmaid’s gold sequin gowns, the unique distressed wood guest book, and the various DIY elements that brought the day together. We often get asked how couples can DIY some of their items to save money without losing the elegance of the day. Emily and Stephen did this beautifully with their picture frame table numbers which can be recreated with a cute picture frame and number stickers of your choice! Thank you Megan Schmitz Photography for sharing this romantic ballroom wedding with us today!

Dramatic Purple Virginia Wedding Reception: Megan + Chris
June 5, 2013

After their sophisticated, outdoor wedding ceremony, Megan and Chris upped the drama and glamour for their reception, captured by Kristen Gardner Photography! Moody lighting and luxurious florals really stole the show here, folks! Of course, the photo booth (turned favors and guest book, too!) was also a star. Check out their perfectly purple-hued reception and see for yourself!

Custom Wedding Coasters

From Megan: For the theme, we decided on a classic feel and chose purple and silver as our wedding colors. We added preppy touches with chevron throughout the stationary. We focused on having a sophisticated event with good food, lots of drinks and a packed dance floor!

Moody Reception Flowers Purple Wedding Thank You Signs

There were only a few DIY projects that we tackled. We got our Martha Stewart-on by creating signage, head table escort cards, the guest book and a seating chart display. The cocktail hour displayed numerous family wedding portrait photos. This personal detail meant the world to us. Those who couldn’t be with us on our wedding day were honored by the images. (The reason why I love photography!)

Megan’s advice to other DC-area couples:

My advice to future brides is to decide what elements of the wedding are a must-have, and then compromise on the rest. Its easy to get caught up in thinking that everything is as important as the next, but having a clear idea of what is truly important to you will keep you happy throughout the process. I would recommend giving control to your vendors. They are the experts in the field and are truly amazing at what they do.

Sophisticated Outdoor Virginia Wedding Ceremony: Megan + Chris
June 5, 2013

Megan and Chris wed in an outdoor Virginia ceremony sprinkled with purple hues and chevron details and captured by Kristen Gardner Photography. And if that isn’t enough, the flowers are not to be missed, either! Best of all, they chose Lansdowne Resort as their venue so they could spend an entire relaxing weekend with their guests. I love that idea!

 Confetti Ring Shot

From Megan: We both have large families and wanted to ensure our wedding was a large celebration. It was important for us to also spoil our guests and give them a weekend vacation too. Our venue Lansdowne Resort was chosen just for that reason. Everyone, including us, was able to show up to the resort, spend time together and relax. Family was the number one factor behind every decision we made!

My florist Holly, there are no words! We shared our vision with her and she created a masterpiece. The ceremony chuppah adorned with ribbons was a dream come true. It was the perfect way to mix our Jewish and Catholic religions. She created unique and personal arrangements that reflected our style to the tee.

Wedding Veil Inspiration
November 15, 2012

The veil. Are you wearing one on your wedding day? There’s certainly nothing that says “bride” quite like one and there seems to be a veil style for everyone today. Cage veils for the vintage-inspired, voluminous tulle varieties for the glamorous, cathedral length veils for the traditional and just about every length and style in between. Some let the tulle do the talking, others add lace, embellishments and fascinators to dial up the drama. We’ve rounded up a few of our favorite veils from Washington, DC-area brides to get you inspired today!

What You Need to Know About Rentals
June 5, 2012

Wedding rentals. It is one of those funny wedding terms that just gets thrown around. If you are planning a wedding in DC, Maryland or Virginia, or anywhere, really, chances are good that you have no idea what a “rental” is, much less how to get one. So, let’s start from the beginning and I’m going to share with you the few things you need to know about wedding rentals.

Table linens from Select Event Rentals

Rentals include anything and everything that you have to bring into your wedding location that isn’t already there, like extra furniture or linens and place settings for the tables. If you don’t plan for it, rentals can become a somewhat large and unexpected part of your budget for a wedding, especially in the DC area. Because of all of the other non-wedding events (conventions, political events, corporate meetings etc.) going on in the DC area, rentals are in high demand and can be, but aren’t always, pricey. You might be in for a huge surprise when you find out that your wedding location in DC, Maryland or Virginia doesn’t have the chairs you want, or the table linens that match your decor. You will have to add the rental cost of these items to your budget.

The most common rented items are:

  • Table Linens
  • Napkins
  • Chairs + Seat Cushions
  • Plates/China
  • Glassware
  • Chargers or Baseplates
  • Silverware or Flatware
  • Tables
  • Dance Floor
  • Furniture

This list of rentals could go on and on forever. I kept the list to the common rental items that couples planning a wedding in the DC area might need. If you don’t rent the items on the list above, you should be mindful of where these items are coming from and who is providing them (aka how those costs are being passed along to you).

Keep in mind that if you are having a wedding in a unique location, like a backyard, you’ll need to rent and bring in more items, such as a tent or bathrooms, than for a hotel ballroom or larger restaurant.

Wedding rental companies in the DC area have huge showrooms that you can visit to pick out your items. You will need to set up an appointment, provide a little bit about your budget and your wedding location, and they will preset suggested items for you in advance of a meeting. Check with your wedding location first about which rental companies are approved to work at your venue. Your wedding planner or venue coordinator can be a huge help here and can point you in the direction of some helpful, rental solutions and options.

Rentals from DC Rental

Decor vs. Priorities

One of the biggest drivers of wedding rental costs is your desired wedding theme and decor. If you want certain table linens and place settings, beyond what your venue or caterer is able to provide, then you will need to rent these items. Most venues have chairs, but the question is: do they have the chairs that you want to use?

Biggest Mistake

Look through your contract with your DC area wedding venue carefully and ask a lot of questions about what items they will and won’t be providing. Everything not on their list, you will have to rent. Some venues quote you their price for using their space, but they don’t include the extra costs for the items you will have to rent in order to have a wedding at their location. Suddenly, having your wedding at a certain location when you factor in the rentals might not be so affordable anymore. On the flip side, some venues have great chairs and beautiful plates so you won’t need to rent these items. Not having to rent extra items can be a huge money saver and a venue decision maker.

No matter where the items come from, be sure to factor rentals into your overall wedding cost. If you are looking for rentals, you can start your research with our comprehensive list of wedding rental companies in the DC area.

Intimate and Classic Leesburg Virginia Wedding (Part 2): Jennifer + Bill
March 7, 2012

Welcome back! If you feel in love with Jennifer and Bill’s intimate wedding ceremony this morning, we’re here to make you fall in love a little more! After the rings were exchanged, the duo invited their guests to enjoy an elegant dinner and dancing reception. A first dance, serenaded by a close friend, a handmade cake topper and a sparkler getaway brought their perfect day to a close.

Jennifer’s advice to other DC-area couples:

Hire a videographer! We did not hire one until the week before the wedding, and could not be more thrilled that we made that decision. You can’t be everywhere at once, so it’s been a blast looking back at the funny parts we missed. It’s also such an amazing real-life memory you can have forever. We plan to watch it on every anniversary! Also, when choosing our vendors, we honestly went with our gut. For the photographer, it was all about who we felt completely comfortable with. They will see you in the most awkward moments, the most intimate moments and will be a huge part of your day. The moment we met our photographer, we just knew she was the one. One piece of advice I also have given to several of my friends who are getting married is one that my makeup artist, Ryan Krasney, gave me on my wedding day. I was surrounded by my bridesmaids, mom, and various people while my makeup was started. I began to get overwhelmed listening to all of the background talking and realizing “This is it!” She said, let me take you into a room alone. She did, and it was the most calm, peaceful moment for me. I had time to just think about what that day meant and what was about to happen. I thanked her so much for doing that for me.

Intimate and Classic Leesburg Virginia Wedding (Part 1): Jennfer and Bill
March 7, 2012

Jennifer and Bill almost didn’t meet.  After connecting online and setting up a date, Jennifer almost cancelled  in favor of other plans until a friend convinced her to take the plunge.  She did and last March the couple sealed the deal with a classic reception at the beautiful Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg, VA.  They chose a vibrant color palette of blues and pinks and added a few rustic touches to reflect their laid back personalities.  Amie Otto captured all those details, along with the personalization infused into every element, starting with the intimate ceremony.  Check back later this morning for the rest of this elegant wedding celebration!

Amie-Otto-Photography-Classic-Virginia-Wedding-Landsdowne-Resort-5

From Jennifer: Our theme for the wedding was rustic elegance with a twist of wine! We’re a laid back couple with a love for finding the beauty in things we are passionate about. We wanted an intimate ceremony with the focus on who we are as a couple in our everyday lives.

Our ceremony was the most personal touch we added to our wedding. It was officiated by two very close friends, and our vows told the true story about our dating in a sweet and very fun way. It was solely about who we are as a couple and how we want to live our lives together, not about what the expectations of us were as a “married couple”. We also asked our friend, singer/songwriter Todd Wright, to sing my bridal entrance song, which was very non-traditional and more about my true feelings for my husband. He also sang an acoustic version of our first dance song, which meant more to us than anything.

Amie-Otto-Photography-Classic-Virginia-Wedding-Landsdowne-Resort-Ceremony

My favorite detail of that day turned out to be the adorable sign my flower girl carried. She couldn’t drop flowers, so I bought a sign that said “Here comes the bride” for her to carry. It was such a hit that many of my friends have since used one!

Our best man and I plotted a different delivery of the wedding rings. When the rings were requested, the last groomsman began passing a Virginia Tech lunch pail down the row until it got to the best man. He opened it and presented the rings. My husband loved it! We are both Hokies, and that just demonstrated the fun-loving couple we are and what we wanted to share with everyone that day.
