Gold Gilded French Inspired Wedding
May 27, 2019

Today’s styled shoot features the brand new venue, Perry Belmont House. This beautiful Washington DC wedding venue sits on a corner near DuPont Circle and the history surrounding the house is amazing. It was built in 1909 by a Parisian architect and is filled with stunning gilded gold accents. The theme of today’s wedding inspiration was French princess meets Greece! The bold floral design was inspired by the stunning cascading pink floral called Bougainvillea, a flower that is everywhere on Greek islands. The petals down the staircase looked like a soft breeze blew the Bougainvillea flowers around. Such a pretty touch. Wanting to play off of the crisp hot pink/fuchsia, the team opted to integrate velvety blues and gold to accent. Blue is a stunning pop of color that evokes thoughts of the Greek isles.

Our favorite detail of the shoot has to be the unique wedding cake. The ribbon is made of sugar! We were absolutely blown away by how real it looks. The card on the place setting is Sonnet 116 by William Shakespeare, which is a fun little detail. Instead of doing a traditional menu card, they wanted each guest to enjoy a beautiful Sonnet to remember why they were there – for the love of two people. Thank you to Kurstin Roe Photography for sharing this French inspired styled shoot with us today!

Why Hire a Wedding Planner?
February 28, 2019

Are you considering hiring a planner for your DC area wedding but are still on the fence? We know it can be a big investment! And when you have so many vendors to hire, it can be difficult to justify another expense. If you’ve read United with Love in the past, you know how important we think wedding planners can be! Not only do they help guide your through a process you’ve probably never been through before but they do so much more. They can lower your stress levels, offer guidance, handle vendors and even save you time and money. And trust us, as wedding planners ourselves, that is not all we do. Don’t believe us? Take it from some of the best DC area wedding planners! Keep reading for their advice on why you should hire a planner.

And if you’re looking for more info on planners, check out our Wedding Planners vs Coordinators vs DIY post to see which is the best fit for you!

Kurstin Roe Photography

In your opinion, what is the most valuable aspect of hiring a wedding planner or coordinator? Why should brides and grooms spend the money?

My clients appreciate two key aspects of working with me: first, saving time during the planning phase, because I’ve planned weddings in DC for 17 years and I have a wide network of contacts. They don’t get lost in analysis paralysis. Second, my clients regularly tell me that they have very little stress, not only during the planning, but also on the wedding day, because they know I have their back. They can turn almost any challenge over to me and I’ll tackle it on their behalf. – Janice, Bellwether Events

Michelle Lindsay Photography via Tented Virginia Home Wedding

Peace of mind. This is one of the biggest days of your life, why should you leave it to chance? Many clients feel like they have planning experience, but they have never planned a wedding and weddings are a special beast altogether. The planner can help you build a vendor team that fits your budget and vision — far better than any team you could assemble via google searches. They are experts at what they do and can help make the process more efficient, less stressful, as well as be there to troubleshoot issues when they inevitably arise. Flowers are beautiful, but they wilt the next day. A band may sound incredible, but it is only for a few hours. A planner invests his or her time in you and advocates for you for months and months and also makes sure you and your family and friends don’t have to lift a finger on the day of the event. Isn’t that worth the investment? – Teresa, Rex & Regina Events

Love Life Images via Intimate Dumbarton House Wedding

A seasoned planner with years of experience has likely seen whatever plans you dreamed up for your big day in real life, and can better help you either bring them to fruition or navigate any issues that might come up and avoid them. Being versed in everything from people management to event execution will make sure that you have support for wedding problems that might be tricky and your “friends and family” don’t have the answers to. – Tabitha, Roberts & Co Events

Elizabeth Fogarty Photography via Chic Ballroom Wedding

Avoiding potential mistakes or missteps. During the planning phase, we can help avoid costly mistakes and avoid making a decision that would result in an uncomfortable situation for your guests experience. – Vicky, Event Accomplished

Jessica Latos Photography via Charming Woodend Sanctuary Wedding

The most valuable aspect for most couples is that typically when a client hires a wedding planner before they hire vendors, planners save them at least the amount of money they spent on the planner themselves by pointing them in the right direction. Hiring the wrong venue or the wrong vendor can set couples back by hundreds or thousands of dollars in each category. Planners help create realistic budgets that show you were you should be spending your money based on a budget designed around typical weddings in the DC area (not what some online budget calculator has with no logistical parameters built in). – Katie, Elegance and Simplicity

Emily Clack Photography via Kate Spade Inspired DAR Wedding

In terms of wedding planning, a good wedding planner can streamline the process and save the couple so much time and money. And if a couple is decided to plan the wedding without a planner, I would still recommend a coordinator. At the end of the day, a coordinator will take over the event management and that allows the couple to enjoy their day. Which in my opinion, is truly priceless. – Margo,  Bright Occasions

As you can see, hiring a wedding planner can truly help the whole wedding process stress free and smooth. Stay tuned for monthly installments of more planning tips, tricks, and past experiences from our amazing United with Love wedding vendor family! Happy planning everyone!

Timeless District Inspired DAR Wedding
November 8, 2018

Today’s District inspired DAR wedding is full of so many unique and stunning design details. We couldn’t take out eyes off of them! The wedding venue, Daughters of the American Revolution, inspired the wedding style as it is as classic and timeless as you can get in DC.

A custom venue drawing was included in the stationery, in addition to other DC monuments and cherry blossoms. Megan wanted a neutral palette that didn’t include a bright gold or any pinks. They went with matte champagne hues as well as silvers and a dusty lavender to pair with the whites, creams and ivories.

Guests entered the venue through the impressive doorway on 17th Street; for this entrance, they bride and groom wanted a big statement decor piece to make a killer first impression. They settled on a custom table with a Lucite frame that offered a welcome message and beverage when guests arrived. This stunning piece was flipped to feature the seating chart after the ceremony ended. The path to the ceremony location required guests to walk through the reception space, so they used a custom hard wall adorned with family photos to hide the dinner tables. This hard wall was later moved to be the back-bar on the terrace after dinner. We love this idea. Re-purposing unique design aspects is one of our favorite things to see! Thank you to Bellwether Events for sharing this classic DC wedding with us today!

Classic Navy and Gold Anderson House Wedding
May 23, 2018

If you’re looking to host an summer DC wedding, you can draw great inspiration from today’s Anderson House wedding. Hollie and Mark wanted their day to reflect their tastes; simple and classic, and they found the perfect venue with this intimate DC wedding venue.  From its striped awnings, opulent reflecting pool, and lush towering garden; its hard to image being right in the center of the bustling city when standing in the courtyard! The detailing of the house allowed their floral and decor scheme to stay simple, with a little pop of color using vibrant pink tulips and navy wedding menus and programs.

After marrying in the back garden, guests moved upstairs to enjoy cocktail hour. One of our favorite elements of this day was the show-stopping grand entrance by the couple. They descended the master staircase and went directly into their first dance, twirling on the dance floor under the venues antique glittering chandeliers. Isn’t that staircase perfect for a killer reception entrance?  Thank you to Kurstin Roe Photography for sharing this Anderson House wedding with us today and check back on Friday for an extra DC area real wedding to wrap up the week of inspiration!

Guilded Gold Fall DC Wedding
November 8, 2017

We are heading back to Carnegie Institution for Science for another amazing fall DC wedding today! We love this venue so much and want to showcase two amazing weddings from our one of our favorite DC wedding venues! Ken and Laura were married last fall in an intimate wedding with their ceremony at the iconic Cathedral of St. Matthews the Apostle downtown. The architecture and detailing of their church was a backdrop to their religious mass that was breath taking. Weaving a color story of navy, gold, with pops of burnt orange, they made the fall color story look glamorous and exciting!

When asked what the most important parts of planning a wedding were, having a great party atmosphere with delicious food was at the top of the list. Working with their caterer, Spilled Milk Catering they created drink and app pairings that were quite a hit!  They wanted to make sure that their guests felt welcomed and comfortable throughout the night. We also loved how the party animal escort cards were a twist on the seating assignments. It really add a light and fun element to the decor design! For their seating, a kings table anchored the center of the room. As a personalized note, each seat had a deep blue base plate created by Roberts & Co Events and Just Write Studios as a take away!  They wrapped the evening with dancing and a roaming bar cart with whiskey, scotch, and cigars. They even had home made spirits that the groom distilled himself! Thank you to Kurstin Roe Photography for sharing this beautiful fall DC wedding with us today!

Funky Fun Ice Cream Inspiration
May 24, 2017

When planning all of your DC wedding weekend activities think outside the box. You want to choose something that guests can really have fun with. Instead of a cocktail reception at the hotel when guests arrive, consider an afternoon ice cream and cocktail social to start the weekend! Who wouldn’t love to kick things off with something sweet? Two amazing DC wedding planners, Cheers Darling and Sara Muchnick Events partnered together to create this concept. They revealed it for some local wedding pros and we just love how this idea is so transformable. From bachelorette parties and bridal showers to pre and post wedding parties, this fun summer treat easily brings your favorite guests together.

On the lawns of DC Navy Yard, Ice Cream Jubilee set up an adorable ice cream stand and served fresh scoops alongside refreshing. fizzy summer cocktails. Having mini stations for ice cream, drinks, or games gives guests the ability to free flow throughout the space and mingle more readily. One element that makes this such a cool idea is the incorporation of a big ball pit and fun lounge area. This gives guests a place to congregate and break the ice; and don’t count out the killer photo op!  Lastly, as a takeaway, guests were given personalized ice cream scoops and treats as favors. These favors are simple, personal and tie back into the overall event concept. By choosing such a unique wedding favor, your guests are sure to remember your event as an awesome one!

Thank you so much to Kurstin Roe for sharing this awesome afternoon party with us. Make sure to look to the bottom for the full list of great DC wedding vendors who helped put on today’s ice cream social!

How To: Find a Hotel Room Block For Your Wedding
March 7, 2017

We know you have a million things to think about when planning your DC area wedding! We hate to add more to your plate, but having a hotel room block for your wedding is almost always a must. Reserving a hotel room block will take some pressure off of your guests and will ensure that most of them are staying close by on your big day. This is helpful for timing purposes, as well as guest convenience. And of course you know that we have some amazing local DC hotels to choose from! As an added bonus, most hotels may give you a small discount on the rooms for reserving a whole block, which may increase the odds that your friends and family can make it.

Stephen Bobb Photography

When should I actually get this room block reserved? We would suggest you do this as soon as you lock down your venue. You will want your guests to be near the ceremony and reception!

How do I choose which hotel in which to book the hotel block? If you are getting married in a hotel, it’s probably in everyone’s best interest that the block be in that hotel. If not, choose a nice one nearby. Couples generally choose the same hotel that they are planning on getting ready in and staying in on the wedding day.

Are there different types of room blocks I should know about? Yes! There are often two options you can choose from!

  • Guaranteed Blocks – Often called “closed room blocks,” guaranteed blocks is not one that we would necessarily recommend. The hotel will often require a deposit for this type of block so you may be held financially responsible for any rooms that are not sold. It might be the actual room rate or it might just be a percentage. This is called the attrition rate and can get pretty pricey pretty quickly.
  • Courtesy Block – Often called “open room blocks,” this is the one we would suggest going with, if you can. You generally aren’t responsible if a few of the rooms go un-booked. There is also going to be a cut off date. If your guests don’t book their room before that date, they probably won’t receive the discounted rate. This usually closes a month or more before the event. The only downside to a courtesy block is that you aren’t able to reserve a large numbers of rooms. If you think you will need more than the hotel allows, you should ask if they are open to releasing additional rooms once the first block is filled. if not, another way to get around this is to do another courtesy block at another hotel (or two!) nearby. This can also be helpful if you want to book rooms at different price points for your guests to choose from.

Kurstin Roe Photography

Should I ask about discounts and perks? Yes! Definitely check out what the hotel has to offer. Sometimes hotels have a comp ratio where if a certain amount of rooms is sold in your block, you may receive a room free. Save this for yourself or gift it to your parents or your maid of honor for all of their help and hard work! You can also ask if they will hand out your welcome bags for free or are willing to allow you space to have a post wedding brunch! Oftentimes, hotels may be willing to do this if your wedding reception is booked at the same hotel and most of your guests book there. Maybe the hotel will even keep the bar open late for your after party! It certainly can’t hurt to ask!

Should I try to negotiate with the hotel? Why not? Once again, it can’t hurt to try or ask. If you are planning on negotiating, make sure you ask to speak with a manager. Sales people aren’t always allowed to negotiate. Make sure you are polite, but firm. You want to keep your and your guest’s best interests in mind; the hotel, on the other hand, will keep their bottom line in mind. In order to keep your business, however, they may be willing to bend a bit!

Kurstin Roe Photography

In order to be prepared when you speak with a hotel associate about booking your room block, have some of these questions in mind:

  • Is there a minimum number of rooms you have to block?
  • Will my guests receive a discount of some sort for booking within the room block?
  • What will the end rate be (with taxes and fees) per night?
  • If all rooms become booked, is it possible to open up more rooms with the discount?
  • Do I need to put down a deposit? How much does it cost?
  • What is the cutoff date for reservations?
  • Is there a penalty if rooms remain after the cutoff date?
  • Are we responsible if a guest cancels their reservation? And are we responsible if there are additional charges incurred in the room due to damage, mini bar, etc.?
  • Can my guests book online or do they have to call to receive the discount?
  • Will reservations be accepted after the cutoff date at the discounted rate, pending availability?
  • Do you offer courtesy room blocks? If so, what is your room number maximum to receive this benefit?
  • Will all of these room be in the same area of the hotel?
  • Who will be my point of contact for the room block. Who can I talk to if there is any sort of issue?
  • Will you alert me when someone reserves in the room block?
  • Will I be alerted if all of the rooms are booked?
  • Is parking included in the rate or will that be an additional charge for my guests?
  • Can I drop off welcome bags for your staff to hand out when a guest in the block checks in? And, is there a charge for this service?
  • Are there any standard amenities? This may include breakfast, shuttles, wifi, etc.

Happy hotel hunting everyone!

Feathers and Jewel Toned DC Wedding
February 22, 2017

Because Jordyn and Max chose a February wedding date, they let that direct their design aesthetic for their Four Seasons Georgetown wedding. They pulled in which tones of burgundy, plum, and gold to evoke a lively yet slightly warm wintery vibe. The addition of the pheasant feathers also inspired the couple’s design choices as they added them into their various florals and menu cards. This touch made their wedding especially unique! Not only do we heart their amazing color palette and and design choices, but we also can’t get over the small details. Just look at the amazing items they incorporated into their tablescape and decor. The textured base-plates and laser cut name cards are absolutely amazing! We love when couples opt for items like these; they really elevate the design of the whole day and are sure to impress the guests.

We also love that, instead of a traditional guest book, they opted to have guests write wisdom and wishes to place in wooden boxes that housed wine bottles. These three bottles were all labeled to be opened on different anniversaries down the line. This is such a cool idea that extends their wedding day for years to come and allows their guests to be  a part of it. Thank you to Kelley Cannon Events for sharing this amazing local DC wedding with us!

Contemporary Fun Pi Day Wedding: Erin + Jay
November 9, 2016

Now that we are able to clean up the pieces after the election, we thought what more would our readers want to see than a bright cheery yellow wedding full of pie and a floating chuppah you wont want to miss! With a very small window to fit in a wedding, Janice of Bellwether Events worked with Erin and Jay to plan their DC wedding ceremony and reception around a spring break Med program window. That time frame fell on Pi-day, March 14th and what better way to celebrate by serving up Dangerously Delicious Pies and DC Slices pizza pies for late night snacks. Our favorite detail about this color rich affair is the floating chuppah that was suspended in the middle of the ballroom for the ceremony. Anchored by vibrant yellow orchid sprays, this ceremony was unique and really brought the tall ceilings of the venue down to create an intimate space for the couple. Congrats to the newlyweds and thank you to Kurstin Roe Photography for sharing their pi-day wedding with us today!

Fairmont Hotel Spring Wedding: Stephanie + Michael
July 25, 2016

Happy Monday! We hope you had a fun (and we are sure, HOT!) weekend. We are starting this week off with another lovely Fairmont D.C wedding from Kurstin Roe Photography.  Michael and Stephanie met at Villanova University while volunteering as EMTs for the campus’ ambulance company. It was in 2011 they were living in New Jersey while Michael was attending medical school and Stephanie was working on her Master’s degree that their lives changed forever. Stephanie was hospitalized and ultimately diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a chronic neurodegenerative disease. Never deterred from a challenge, and unwavering in his commitment, Michael proposed to Stephanie just four days after her diagnosis on Villanova’s campus and promised that they would always be a team, just as they always had been. The couple says that their secret is to never take life too seriously and to always have each other’s backs. Stephanie and Michael viewed their wedding day as a chance to celebrate not only their love, but the people who have supported their relationship through thick and thin. They planned their DC ceremony and reception to be a celebration surrounded by their closest friends and family starting at Western Presbyterian church before heading to the Georgetown hotel for dinner and dancing. We love the bright, cheery springtime florals coupled with the light filled glass atrium and colonnade at the Fairmont Hotel. Thank you to Kurstin Roe Photography for sharing this joyous wedding with us!
