We cannot be more in love with the ceremony space and the floral designs used in this Barns at Hamilton Station wedding. The wooden barrels, sunflowers, and Barn setting create a rustic vibe while still maintaining the ability for guests to party during the reception. Elegant meets Rustic Virginia Wedding

Riverside on the Potomac Virginia wedding - Timmester Photography (54)

Riverside on the Potomac is on of our favorite rustic venues because of how incredibly versatile the grounds are at this Loudoun County gem. The groom wanted a large affair in a rural setting surrounded by nature, whereas the bride wanted a small wedding at an elegant setting, such as a country club. together, they opted for a super elegant rustic vibe with crip linens, flowing vines, and touches of gold and mercury glass. We can’t get enough of this high end rustic vibe, captured by Timmester Photography.

A Virginia Hometown Love Affair

There were so many personal elements on this wedding, photographed by Stephanie Messick Photography, and you know how we love the addition of those! The groom’s mother made a guest book signing quilt and the bride’s father created all of the woodworking decor details that created this wedding’s homey rustic atmosphere. The couple continued to stay true to their personal style, with red and blue color accents in the barn and cowboy boots under the bride’s gown.

Maryland Rustic Farm Wedding

When this bride and groom began to plan their special day, they knew they wanted a relaxed atmosphere with a very chill bride. Their parents, on the other hand, wanted a more formal affair. In order to combine these two aesthetics, they came up with a classy rustic vibe with crisp white linens, wooden accents, and an amazing wood pallet escort card display with vintage keys. This beautiful day was captured by Paired Images and featured so many amazing design details!

Overhead Wedding Design and Decor
September 27, 2016

Everyone has a different vision for what the perfect wedding day should look like. We know because we get to spend time looking at them in all their beauty day in and day out! Some brides and grooms opt for the classic, fresh white look while others go for more rustic wedding inspiration with a cozy feel. We get to see chic modern designs and intimate, warm affairs. Whatever your style, everyone wants their guests to be wowed when they walk into the ceremony and reception spaces. Today we want to discuss one piece that you can add to any design plan that will instantly evoke luxury and taste; we’re talking about overhead wedding decor and hanging installations. What exactly is overhead decor, you may ask. Well, overhead decor can mean a myriad of things and that is what makes it so diverse and interesting! You can opt for a dazzling chandelier, lush greenery, vibrant florals, twinkling lights, and the list goes on and on.

Hanging Florals & Greens If you are looking for your head table to take center stage, placing a large hanging arrangement of vines, greenery, and/or flowers will definitely draw the eye and create a show stopping focal point in the room. We love the idea of draping these elements above your friends and family for a garden feel. Creating a canopy with your favorite fresh garlands and florals makes for a beautiful post dinner experience.

Chandeliers If your venue has stunning chandeliers, this one is a no brainer! They’ve already supplied the perfect design element for you! If not, discuss with your venue coordinator whether or not you can bring in your own and where you can hang them. Chandeliers come in may colors, shapes, and designs so finding one to fit your wedding day aesthetic should be a breeze! Think an outdoor wedding will not allow for the hanging of overhead decor? Think again! One of our favorite uses of this design element is when chandeliers are hung from a nearby large tree or two, providing a beautiful glow for your guests as the night progresses.

Floral Chandeliers This is a great combo of the first two ideas! If the chandeliers in your venue aren’t exactly to your taste, hanging greenery and florals from these pieces may add a little something extra to the space. If your venue doesn’t have any hanging chandeliers but will allow you to bring some in you can snag some great vintage finds that may not work anymore at a flea market or second hand shop. These can then be hung decoratively with some of your favorite vines and blooms just to kick the decor up a notch!

Drapery Hanging fabric can instantly add a luxurious and high-end feel to your big day. Cover your reception room, floor and ceiling, with your favorite solid or print fabric to cover an unappealing wallpaper and wall color. If you opted for a barn setting but want to kick up the formality of the event a little, adding some drapery on the ceiling and cascading down the walls periodically will certainly give you that effect.

Hanging Lanterns Whether these are paper, metal, wood, or any other material that you can dream up, the use of hanging lanterns is a great way to add a little glow to your reception. Place them strategically over dinner tables with fake candles or small lights inside to set the mood in a low light setting or whimsically hang them around the dance floor for an installation piece to admire mid-boogie!

Cafe Lights Add a twinkling atmosphere to any reception space by hanging bistro or cafe lights. We absolutely love cafe lights over and dance floor or outside dinner tables, but it’s not necessarily only for outdoor weddings! You can adapt this lighting design for an indoor venue as well. In a lower light environment, cafe lights add a little bit of romance without taking away from the beauty of your overall design and decor.

Gorgeous Tented Anderson House Wedding
March 10, 2020

Elizabeth and Jonathan’s Washington DC wedding was the epitome of elegance with a touch of Napa Valley. The wedding ceremony took place in the Anderson House garden and was officiated by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. After a cocktail hour in the historic home, guests were welcomed to dinner in a clear-top tent. Complete with hanging greenery, elegant lanterns and touches of blue throughout the decor. Cross-back chairs, mix of soft wood tones and greenery accents transformed the classic space to an alfresco dinner in California. We love everything about this magical day! Thank you to CG & Co Events for sharing this Anderson House wedding with us today.

Greenery and Navy District Winery Wedding
November 27, 2019

We are wishing everyone a very happy and safe Thanksgiving tomorrow! What are your big plans for the day? Food and football? Family and friends? Whatever you choose to do, relax and enjoy while remembering everything that you’re thankful for this year. Before we dive into the turkey, let’s check out today’s District Winery wedding which  features abundant greenery, all white florals, and pops of navy. What could be better than that?!

We love the backdrop that this stunning DC wedding venue provides and it was made all the more enchanting through eucalyptus garlands, lush flowers and a mix of pillar and taper candles to set the romantic mood. And can we talk about the outfits that both Jeanne and Stephen were sporting?  Talk about a well dressed pair! With the groom in a three piece blue suit and the bride in a wow worthy off the shoulder, long sleeved lace dress and all the love that shines between, we couldn’t take our eyes off of them. It’s lucky we even noticed the gorgeous ceremony arch and reception decor. Thank you to Chip Dizard for sharing this late summer wedding with us today.

Maryland Holiday Soiree Inspiration
November 21, 2019

Imagine hundreds of twinkle lights wrapped inside wisteria branches arching over a patio that overlooks 100 acres of exquisite grounds in Harford County. Today’s cozy and chic winter welcome dinner is what holiday dreams are made of! This holiday party was housed inside a Georgian Revival mansion that dates back to 1898 and was filled with magic that only this time of year can bring.

Steelcut Flower Co. decked the halls with non-traditional textured magnolia leaves, dark red roses, and hand painted gold greenery. Talk about major holiday vibes! The Concert Truck serenaded nearly 40 guests as they sipped hot chocolate and festive holiday cocktails while cozying up on velvet settees. Seriously, we wish this decor was present in our living rooms right now. Are we alone? Doubt it! Small bites were wrapped like presents and served in other whimsical ways by servers wearing Tartan plaid ties to match the runners in the stunning and festive, holiday-inspired tablescape.

Directly following cocktail hour, guests were invited to be seated at charming Barnes Farm Tables with chic place settings from Pretty Little Wedding Co. where guests enjoyed an incredible 3 course dinner. Each seat was set with a hand lettered ornament and delicate contemporary black and white menus. Our favorites at Urban Row Photography captured it all beautifully and truly brought the spirit of the holidays to life.

Romantic Fall Army and Navy Club Wedding
November 14, 2019

We thoroughly love the colors that come with DC fall weddings, as we have one of the most beautiful areas for turning foliage and autumn festive décor. Cady and James envisioned a berry hued wedding with rich navy and gold accents, that paired perfectly fall pumpkins and metallic accents. They were married at an iconic Georgetown church followed by a dancing filled evening at the prestigious Army and Navy Club in the heart of the district. The pair met in college where the groom was DJ’ing a party that Cady was at. Coming together later on, the pair instantly clicked and their story came full circle when James DJ’d a dance set between band breaks at their own wedding! Talk about an epic party trick! Our favorite part to their special touches, were the handmade porcelain hummingbirds that each guest received as an escort cards. Inscribed with the couples initials and date, they are a tradition given in James’ family as wedding tokens, and made by a special person dear to the couple. What an amazing memento of a lovely union! Thank you Roberts & Co Events for sharing a look at their fall Army and Navy Club wedding.

Romantic Spring Maryland Wedding
March 6, 2019

Today’s romantic spring Maryland wedding took place at the Mt. Washington Mill Dye House. This unique venue hosts rustic industrial design and was great juxtaposed with the soft blush and creams of the bridal party and the floral decor. We just love the contrast created! The cafe lights over the dinner tables softened the venue further creating an industrial chic atmosphere dripping in flowers and greenery. We especially loved their two tiered nearly naked cake with fresh fruit and florals dotting the tiers. Thank you to Sincereli Photography for sharing this Baltimore wedding with us today!

Rustic Chic Maryland Affair
January 23, 2019

Since both Hunter and Allie grew up in rural Maryland, they were inspired to go with rustic wedding decor for their fall celebration. Their beautiful purple and white flowers, along with plenty of greenery, really tied together the theme and colors of their rustic chic Maryland wedding. Some of the special details included a wooden welcome sign designed by a friend and chalkboard dessert signs. One of our amazing UWL wedding vendors, Mike B Photography, captured every detail in this Maryland wedding day beautifully. Another sweet and personal touch on their wedding day was their first dance. The couple’s friend, country singer Matt Chase, flew in from Nashville to sing for the two of them.

Allie recalls one funny mishap during the wedding – losing her veil while walking down the aisle. It took help from her best friend’s mom to get the veil back into her hair, “but it didn’t ruin anything for the ceremony,” Allie says. We bet that’s something she (and her guests) won’t forget!

Tell us your proposal story. Hunter was away for work but decided to come home for a quick weekend trip. It was a beautiful fall day so we decided to take a walk in downtown Annapolis. We stopped for some coffee and walked down by the pier. We stopped to talk as we got closer to the water and that’s when hunter got down on one knee to propose. Right after, all my friends and family popped out of their hiding places to surprise me. They all got amazing photos and videos, just like I had hoped.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now? I know you have a vision of the perfect wedding and if everything goes to plan then that’s awesome, but if it doesn’t, and something should happen, don’t sweat it. Some things you just have to roll with. Allie lost her veil coming down the isle and we all just laughed and went with it. Sometimes those things that go wrong make for some great (and funny) memories. Sometimes it’s even something that the guests won’t even notice. Just make sure you have fun.

Classic Navy and Gold Anderson House Wedding
May 23, 2018

If you’re looking to host an summer DC wedding, you can draw great inspiration from today’s Anderson House wedding. Hollie and Mark wanted their day to reflect their tastes; simple and classic, and they found the perfect venue with this intimate DC wedding venue.  From its striped awnings, opulent reflecting pool, and lush towering garden; its hard to image being right in the center of the bustling city when standing in the courtyard! The detailing of the house allowed their floral and decor scheme to stay simple, with a little pop of color using vibrant pink tulips and navy wedding menus and programs.

After marrying in the back garden, guests moved upstairs to enjoy cocktail hour. One of our favorite elements of this day was the show-stopping grand entrance by the couple. They descended the master staircase and went directly into their first dance, twirling on the dance floor under the venues antique glittering chandeliers. Isn’t that staircase perfect for a killer reception entrance?  Thank you to Kurstin Roe Photography for sharing this Anderson House wedding with us today and check back on Friday for an extra DC area real wedding to wrap up the week of inspiration!

Southern Inspired Baltimore Maryland Soiree
May 14, 2018

Chris and Kati’s southern inspired wedding was over Labor Day weekend, so they incorporated seasonal elements to ensure that their guests enjoyed the last weekend of summer. The navy and black color palette was softened by the addition of blue floral gowns worn by the maid and matron of honor. The outdoor cocktail reception space showcased boxwood hedge bars and watercolor floral linens. They incorporated touches of lemon into their big day in multiple unique ways. They offered fresh lemonade and lemonade signature cocktails on the bar; a nod to the quintessential summer drink! Kati painted lemon table numbers and stippled lemons on a hand lettered seating chart mirror. Kati even wore lemon shoes and Chris wore socks to match! Don’t miss out in hearing more about that, below.
An element that we loved about the southern-inspired event was that the couple incorporated all of their favorite foods from below the Mason-Dixon! They featured Maryland favorites like crab cake hors d’oeuvres and lemon sticks (a Baltimore tradition). On the bar they continued the nod to their home state by featuring Sagamore, which is a local Baltimore-based rye whiskey. The couple hand bottled these at Sagamore’s distillery prior to their wedding. For dinner, guests enjoyed shrimp and grits and bourbon-braised short ribs. For dessert, in addition to the cake, guests enjoyed pecan pies and house made strawberry shortcake. The sweetest end to the sweetest day! Thank you to Hudson Nichols Photography for sharing this southern inspired outdoor Maryland wedding ceremony with us today!
Describe your wedding vision: Chris is a graphic designer and I’m an Event Planner, so one thing that we have in common is that we both love meaningful details and we set out to include as many personal touches as we could. We decided on a southern-inspired, late summer garden wedding in Baltimore. From the honey favors that we sourced from an apiary near my grandmother’s farm, to the invitation suite that Chris designed and the incorporation of family photos displayed alongside my ginger jar collection, we wanted to create a wedding that would feel like it could only be ours.
Special Moments, Traditions or Unique Touches: Chris and I had a hand in most every detail at our wedding. He designed a navy floral invitation suite, complete with save the date; envelope liners; favor tags and even a template for our guest welcome letter and wedding program. I love to paint and do calligraphy, so I painted our table numbers and created a seating chart mirror with lemons stippled onto the border.  I had gotten Kate Spade Lemon themed wedges as a gift to wear for the wedding and set out to find Chris lemon socks. After months of searching I gave up on the idea of our matching lemon attire. My mother knew that was unsuccessful in my hunt for lemon socks, so she found lemon appliqués and sewed them onto a pair of socks and gave them to Chris at our Rehearsal Dinner!
Our families are very close. In order to honor them at our wedding we added wedding photos of our parents and grandparents to our guestbook table. I also really wanted to incorporate my family into what I wore down the aisle; I wore my mother’s veil as my “something borrowed,” my maternal grandmother’s watch slide charm bracelet as my “something old” and my paternal grandmother’s Wedgewood brooch served as my “something blue”. It meant so much to me to be able to create new memories with items from the women in my family.
