Color Inspiration: Yellow Garden Tea Party
March 17, 2011

Have you ever wondered where wedding planners find inspiration?  Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the design process from DC wedding planners Emily and Amber at Amber Karson Events.  The recently participated in Engaged! magazine’s  luxury bridal event, which allowed couples to visit three premier hotels in DC and interact with local wedding vendors.  Mike B Photography was able to capture Emily and Amber‘s yellow hued garden tea party theme. Take it away, ladies…

amber-karson-events

We love finding inspiration for events everywhere around us.  We are influenced by everything from our own gardens and neighborhood shops, to fashion runways and interior design trends.  We, of course, also browse tons of wedding blogs and magazines to keep up on what is fresh and love the collaborative spirit of this industry.

We were thrilled to learn that our Engaged! hotel assignment was The Hay-Adams hotel and the beautiful Lafayette Room would be one of the spaces we were working in.  When looking for inspiration, the venue often plays a big role in our design and decor direction.  The airiness of the Lafayette Room and fabulous natural light were elements that we wanted to highlight in our initial design plan for the event.

For this particular look, our main influences were: garden accents, shades of yellow, ruffles and vintage china/silverware.  Here is our inspiration board layout:

garden-tea-party-inspiration-board

Garden Accents
With the promise of spring just a few weeks away, a garden motif heavily influenced the look we created.  Our botanical print china and tea-cup place cards complimented the amazing display of garden delight from Romance of Flowers.  We also displayed a fingerprint tree from Etsy vendor Bleu de toi, which allowed our tree to blossom throughout the event – this is a wonderful alternative to a traditional guest book.

Shades of Yellow
As the weather starts to turn the presence of daffodils popping up in the garden signifies spring in all its glory is on its way!  We knew a palette of yellow was the perfect color choice for this design.  We always recommend working with a color palette instead of picking just one or two wedding colors.  Look at a paint swatch for inspiration.  Using various hues in the same color family is an instant way to create depth in your design.  The various shades of yellow make this look feel luxurious and rich versus casual.

Ruffles
We love the romance of ruffles that we are seeing in bridal gowns and in fashion – a trend we are glad is sticking around!  The custom ruffle linen we used was certainly swoon-worthy!

Vintage
The Hay-Adams is so timeless and we wanted to create a look that would have worked years ago and will also work years from now.  A look that your grandmother would love and so would your best friend.  To go along with our indoor garden tea party vibe, our initial plan was to incorporate vintage china.  We love vintage, because a.) we love a good hunt and often operate with a you-don’t-really-know-what-you-are-looking-for-but-when-you-find-it-you’ll-know approach to shopping, and b.) there is something so rewarding when you source something that is one-of-a-kind.  However, when deciding to use vintage you are also limited to what you can actually find.  We were putting this look together relatively quickly and we weren’t able to find any green vintage china that we fell in love with.  We did however stumble upon adorable bee plates at Anthropologie and instantly knew we HAD to have them!  We mixed various china patterns from Anthropologie to create a great layered look.  We found the napkin rings from Pottery Barn (inspired by vintage silverware) that were perfect.

So there you have it, a behind-the-scenes look into what inspired us for this particular event.  We’ll leave you with a few final tips:

  • Be open to receiving inspiration from a variety of sources.  You’ll probably find that one great detail when you are not even looking for it.
  • Collect your ideas into a cohesive plan.  Use sites like Pinterest and tools like Style Me Pretty‘s inspiration boards to help you.
  • Be flexible – keep true to your original design ideas, but be open-minded to make adjustments throughout your design process as the end product might be better than you even imagined!
  • Enlist the help of professionals whose work inspires you.  Hiring the right team for your big day makes all the difference.

Bright and Colorful Goodstone Inn Wedding Inspiration
July 3, 2019

Today’s wedding inspiration shoot took place at the idyllic Goodstone Inn in Hunt Country, Middleburg, Virginia. The vibe for this intimate elopement is bright and colorful, while still keeping it romantic and sophisticated. The invitation suite features the bride’s favorite color, a dusty mauve, while also incorporating a crest of flowers and ivy, a throwback to the venue’s ivy facade. A Welcome Box gifted guests citrus tea, a nod to their citrus-inspired signature drinks, and Virginia peanuts for the wedding locale.

The dining table was adorned with mismatched blue China patters, and a bright centerpiece that evokes the fun spirit of the newlyweds. The florals included roses, dahlias, daisies, stock, and astilbe. An intimate ceremony in front of the ivy facade was captured by a live painter; a memento sure to be treasured. Guests enjoyed cocktails with a vintage lounge set by the gardens and fun mobile bars, pouring the newlywed’s signature Citrus Sunset drink. The evening concluded with their wedding cake that featured the dusty mauve seen on the invitations and the florals. Thank you to SRS Events for sharing this beautifully colorful wedding inspiration with us today!

Pastel Watercolor Wedding Inspiration at Sweeney Barn
June 6, 2019

Today’s beautiful styled shoot took place at the ever gorgeous Sweeney Barn in Manassas, Virginia. Filled with splashes of pastel blue, pink, and green, this wedding inspiration is nothing short of romantic and timeless. We love how light and airy this Virginia wedding venue is. It really allows for the wedding details and the bride and groom to shine! There is nothing quite like an elegant versatile space when you’re looking for that perfect backdrop! The hand painted pastel wedding cake has to be one of our favorite details from the shoot with it’s watercolor florals and soft color scheme. It ties back to the bride’s floral print shoes and the soft blue wedding stationery. Thank you to Rebecca Dotson Photography for sharing this wedding inspiration with us today!

Colorful Latin Wedding Inspiration
September 13, 2018

Today we have colorful Latin wedding inspiration for you all! We love the vibrant color story and unique cultural elements woven into this design. This styled shoot was focused on celebrating the Latin American wedding and features one of our fave photographers, Photography by Marirosa! The team behind this styled shoot wanted to bring together their culture, sounds, traditions, colors and more. All of the amazing vendors who participated showcased not only their talents but their focus on inclusion of the Latin traditions in weddings.

For the tablescapes they brought in Mexican talavera plates and platters. They combined these with a variety of Latin American food. From ceviche to tamales, margaritas to guacamole, our mouths are watering. Just look at that amazing spread! Talk about yum. The flowers throughout the day are gorgeous and bright as well! The focus on the strong colors and greens is so unique. We love that they brought in the dark fuschia, orange, and other colors representing the culture.

And why have one cake when you can have two? The wedding cake focused on brighter colors of the overall design, with a splash of Mexican flair. The groom’s cake, on the other hand, features an old school car. How cool is that?! Thank you to Photography by Marirosa for sharing this latin inspired wedding shoot with us today!

Colorful Floral Watercolor Wedding Inspiration
July 19, 2018

Today’s beautiful and colorful styled shoot took place at the historic Whitehall Manor in Annapolis, Maryland. The venue was built in 1764 and the grounds made for a stunning backdrop. They were perfectly for this pastel Maryland wedding inspiration. Between the hundreds of acres on the property, the classic brick, the open waterfront space, and the magical “pink room,” this styled shoot is one to swoon over.

One detail that really made this styled shoot was the abundant colorful bouquets. From all of the colorful ribbon to the eye-popping hues of pretty flowers, each hand-made bouquet created a perfect picture detail! We also love the hand painted watercolor invitation suite and the live, on site painter. These beautiful touches would elevate any wedding. And don’t miss the bride’s gown! The sleeves are jaw droppingly gorgeous. Thank you to Missy Freeman Photography for sharing this wedding inspiration with us today.

Wine Watercolor Wedding Inspiration
June 8, 2017

Today’s wedding inspiration features a color story of deep wine reds and muted greens that we can really get behind. With metallic touches and a stunning naked cake, this styled wedding shoot is giving us some romantic, vintage feels! We love the glimpses of gold that add a sense of luxury. The utensils are fully gold while the wine glasses and champagne flutes are all gold rimmed. The gold candelabra on the head table also adds a little something to the tablescape. We love all of the details that were included in this shoot. From the DJ spinning records to the beautiful garter from our very own Garter Girl, nothing was left out. And here’s something you don’t always get to experience with a styled shoot: You can view the wedding video! Cheerful, Colorful, Bright Yellow Wedding Inspiration
July 23, 2015

Grab your sunglasses and hat today! Weddings are a great time to celebrate of course, and what better way to do that than with bright and cheery colors – like yellow! This fashion runway-to-table wedding inspiration created by Elizabeth Duncan Events and a team of Washington DC area wedding vendors was inspired by this oh-so happy dress by Jenny Packham. Created with the sunshine in mind, the design of this event table and inspiring wedding details lends itself well to a destination wedding, a summer “I do” or even a daytime bridal shower. We are all about the urban city here in DC, but we love this contrasting inspiration for a Washington DC wedding because of its hint of the tropics, take a look at all of these amazing details, including a DIY carved pineapple table number! My favorite has got to be the giant palm leaf turned menu and the bride’s beautifully bright accessories. She’s not afraid to show off her fashion sense and shine bright like the Jenny Packham gown that inspired this entire session! Thank you to Sweet Tea Photography for sharing this bright and vibrant wedding inspiration with us!

From Elizabeth: Sunshine and happiness go hand in hand, that’s why we took a cue from Jenny Packham’s 2015 line and let yellow be our inspiration for a tropical beach-inspired wedding. Palm leaves, pineapples, and plenty of bright yellow blooms are a perfect way to brighten your wedding day.
