Amazing Grace + Industrial Chic Wedding Ideas
June 25, 2014

Good morning Washington DC wedding lovers! If you’re already having a hectic day, take some time to check out this gorgeous post full of wedding ideas inspired by the hymn “Amazing Grace.” Using an industrial chic theme, Sweetface Events created a laid-back, peaceful vibe at Georgetown’s The Powerhouse (Fun fact: The Powerhouse is located on “Grace Street”¦how ironic!). Intricate details like gold foil print on the dessert table made this round up a beautiful one with Lisa Boggs Photography on hand to capture all of the details. The models featured are a real, local family celebrating 13 years of marriage this year! For those of you having lots of kids at your wedding, they incorporated a kids table with a special box of goodies and activities your littlest guests can enjoy.

From the ladies at Sweetface Events: We picked our wedding inspiration from the famous hymn “Amazing Grace.” I had this song sung at my own wedding and every time I hear it, I am always overtaken by the peace  and beauty the song represents. The look started from a gold hand made foil design for the invitations and then you will see the gold foil print on our dessert table. Along with this theme, we wanted to go for an “industrial chic” look, so we picked The Powerhouse in Georgetown. We decided to combine gold details with a blush pink and the flowers have a modern chic.

We wanted to do something fun, so we incorporated ideas for a “kiddie” table at a wedding. We liked the thought of giving the kids a special box with goodies and activities they could enjoy.  The goody box includes fun toys, arts and crafts and a surprise toy replica of the bride and groom’s family dogs.

Unique and Personal Rustic Wedding Reception in Centreville: Stephanie + Christopher
January 13, 2014

We’re back with more from Stephanie and Christopher’s Virginia wedding reception at The Winery at Bull Run, a winery in Centreville, Virginia with an intimate barn setting. (Did you see their unique and personal wedding ceremony??) When it came time to choose the decor, they decided on a rustic, yet elegant, concept to play up the location, captured by Nancy Anderson Cordell Photography. The result? Pure loveliness! And, like their ceremony, their reception was filled with personal details and DIY projects including the wedding advice board, guest book, centerpieces and favors phew!

From Stephanie: I made centerpieces for half of the reception tables from materials purchased from Michael’s”hurricane lamps, candles, and grape vine. I filled the hurricane lamps with corks collected by my father-in-law, a wine aficionado, which were illuminated from within by the candle. I also made the table numbers by printing the numbers on cardstock (to match the font and color of the invitation response cards) and gluing pictures of my husband and I throughout our three years of dating on the opposite sides.

My husband is a big fan of dark chocolate, so my good friend (and culinary school graduate) provided homemade dark chocolate bark in customized packages of brown boxes, ribbon, burlap, and lace as wedding favors. She consulted us on the flavor combinations to suit our tastes and the match the fall season”fig, apricot, and assorted nuts. Simply delicious, and beautiful!

Stephanie’s wedding planning advice to other DC-area couples: It’s easy to feel overwhelmed at first with all of the vendors, ideas, and possibilities. To keep yourself sane, I suggest discussing initial vision and priorities with your partner before diving in. Coming to the table with vision, and budget, in mind will help filter out everything coming at you from so many different directions. If you are really starting from a clean slate and don’t know what you want yet, that’s okay. Just take your time flipping through magazines, perusing Pinterest, and scoping out blogs, until you get your bearings and your personal vision starts to emerge. Never underestimate your own creativity and resourcefulness! And don’t assume something you envision has to be purchased or done by someone else. There are a plethora of helpful online resources to help guide you on some fantastic DIY wedding projects.

Unique and Personal Rustic Wedding Ceremony in Centreville: Stephanie + Christopher
January 13, 2014

Good Monday morning! Stephanie and Christopher are an incredibly sweet (and gorgeous!) couple who planned an intimate rustic Virginia wedding. The Winery at Bull Run was the perfect fit for the pair, who wanted a venue that combined their passions for history and Virginia country. They were inspired to translate their relationship story into their wedding day details. From the bride’s ruby red slippers as she walked down the aisle to Somewhere Over the Rainbow to the unique way they included guests into their wedding ceremony, I’d say they did a fabulous job of making their celebration as personal as can be! We hope you love their gorgeous images from Nancy Anderson Cordell Photography, along with Stephanie’s recollection of the day! Come back later this morning to see their reception too!

Rustic Virginia Wedding (3)

From Stephanie: We envisioned our wedding to be a truly intimate and personal experience for our guests in which every detail represented us and told a story. From the classic car rentals to the ruby slippers I wore while walking down the aisle to “Somewhere Over the Rainbow, every detail was carefully thought out so that our guests would leave the wedding knowing us better as a couple and as individuals…and feeling more connected. This vision was the driving force behind every decision. The venue itself was a combination of two passions”Civil War history and Virginia wine.

Wine and Letters Wedding Ceremony Nancy Anderson Cordell Photography

I found a wonderful vendor on Etsy who made custom wine boxes. I had her carve our names and wedding date into the lid of a beautiful, wooden wine box that was set on the altar at the beginning of the ceremony. Chris and I wrote love letters to one another the night before the wedding, and during the ceremony, put them in the wine box along with a bottle of wine from the first winery we visited. The Officiant narrated this to the guests, and informed them that on our first anniversary, we would read the love letters and drink the wine…and then fill the box with more love letters and another bottle of wine to be enjoyed on our second anniversary. We would repeat this year after year, creating a “story” of our marriage to be cherished forever.

Rustic Virginia Wedding Reception (2)

The last personal touch to the ceremony was a modified Scottish Oathing Stone Ceremony. Instead of a stone, each guest was given a cork as they entered the ceremony area. Towards the end of the ceremony, the Officiant asked the guests to take a quiet moment to channel their love and wishes for us into the corks. After the ceremony concluded, the guests placed their corks into a beautiful vase that we have on display in our house, constantly reminded of our loved ones’ well wishes for our marriage.

Intimate Summer Rooftop Wedding Reception in Washington DC: Lauren + Judson
November 18, 2013

Welcome back to Lauren and Judson’s two-day wedding celebration in Washington DC! (Did you see their intimate rooftop wedding ceremony in Alexandria?!) After some great wedding portraits in downtown DC with Carrie Holbo Photography, they headed to the Flying Bridge (the next day!) for a rooftop reception with a view you can’t beat. In lieu of a traditional guest book, Lauren and Judson had guests sign a book of craft cocktail recipes – cheers!

From Lauren: Our guest book was a book of craft cocktail recipes. Our guests wrote notes on stickers and put them on pages of their choosing. As we make the cocktails in the book, we’ll write/send a photo to whoever wrote on that page. It’s going to be a fun way to reconnect with everyone and remember our amazing weekend!

Lauren and Judson’s advice for other DC area couples planning a wedding:

Washington DC isn’t a cheap location for weddings, and we ultimately ended up spending quite a bit more than we had initially thought we would. When we made the decision to go forward with our plan, we made a pact to really make sure each element felt like us. And now, looking back, we don’t regret a single decision we made. Everything we spent money on, from our band, to the food, to the venues, to the outdoor photo booth, to even the lounge furniture… totally worth it. And we’re so happy with how everything turned out. So my advice is, do what represents you as a couple… and it will all be worth it in the end!

Intimate Summer Rooftop Wedding Ceremony in Virginia: Lauren + Judson
November 18, 2013

Happy Monday, wedding lovers! We’re kicking off the week with Lauren and Judson’s two-day wedding celebration that included an intimate Virginia wedding ceremony and a reception in Washington DC the next day! Carrie Holbo Photography was there to document the day and this wedding party decked out in J.Crew formal wear (Lauren’s dad is the director of design in menswear – lucky!)  But the great fashion doesn’t end there as I am totally coveting Lauren’s coral bridal shoes! Be sure to join us later this morning for their Washington DC wedding reception featuring a grand view!

Virginia Bride Getting Ready

From Lauren: When we started planning, we felt a bit schizophrenic in that we were working with two broad, but different ideas. On one hand, Judson and I are both very close to our families and wanted to do something that was quiet, classy and really honored our families. On the other hand, Judson and I LOVE a good party. What that translated to was a two part wedding celebration – on Friday we had a small ceremony on the rooftop terrace at the Lorien Hotel for just family and our wedding party and on Saturday we had a larger reception at the Flying Bridge, including all of the guests from Friday, plus another 60 or so friends.

My father is Director of Technical Design in menswear at J. Crew, so it was really important for us to honor him and show how proud of him we are by wearing J. Crew. My dress was from their bridal collection. My father had Judson’s Ludlow suit custom tailored for him. And all of my bridesmaids were in J. Crew as well.

From Lauren: I splurged a pair on Ferragamo heels – they were the perfect height and color… I just couldn’t resist. But I think they cost more than my wedding dress and my party dress (eek!). I also wore my recently departed grandmother’s wedding ring on my right hand during our ceremony.

Classic Coral Oatlands Historic House & Gardens Wedding
March 25, 2019

Jill and Nelson’s classic coral and navy Oatlands Historic House & Gardens wedding is so beautiful! After 10 years, their Virginia wedding day tied together the origins of their love story very beautifully. Nelson and Jillian met in high school while on the cross country team together. Nelson’s first words to Jill were “Hey beautiful” and although he probably had no idea then, they would be married 10 years later in the SAME place where he first met Jill! Their wedding day at the historic plantation was classic and elegant with a slight hint of Southern charm. It was complete with coral bridesmaid gowns and blush florals, groomsmen in black and a vintage getaway car to end the night! Thank you to Manali Photography for sharing this beautiful
