Pastel Garden Inspired Leesburg Wedding
January 8, 2018

Anyone else completely and utterly ready for summer yet? I am thankful we have beautiful spring DC weddings to gawk over and distract us from these freezing temperatures outside! Today brings a pastel hued garden-esque Thomas Birkby House wedding in the heart of Leesburg, Virginia. Combine the remarkable talents of the OG of floral design, Holly Chapple Flowers with Alicia Lacey Photography’s ethereal images and we promise you will want to pin all of this to your wedding inspiration boards!

According to Alicia, the couple were a ball of nerves the morning of the wedding; they were so anxious to see each other for their First Look in the gardens! However, the moment Will turned and saw his bride Kristine, you can see anxiety melt always, leaving pure joy and excitement. Joined by their adorable fur baby Cleo, the couple finished portraits then so they were able to be present during the remainder of the wedding day festivities. We adore the soft blush color story in their textured florals; from the outdoor ceremony arbor to the dinner plate dahlias on the reception tables, it came together perfectly.  Thank you to Kristine and Will alongside Alicia Lacey Photography, for sharing their romantic Leesburg Virginia wedding. Come back all week for continued beautiful DC real weddings!

Ethereal DC Monument Portrait Session
July 7, 2017

An impending storm is just about every couple’s worst nightmare when counting down to their DC area wedding day. That’s exactly what Kaylie and TJ were experiencing in the days before saying, “I do” last June. However, these two lovebirds didn’t let it get to them. Unfortunately, while the rain didn’t damper the mood of their day, it did significantly limit the portrait time available for this sweet couple. With only a few photos of themselves together from their wedding, they decided that a session in their wedding clothes would be the perfect way to make up for it! We are so glad they chose to go this route because it created this beautiful DC monument wedding portrait session.

Having grown up and met in DC, the city was a very special place to these two and their love story. When brainstorming locations, they almost immediately agreed upon one of the city’s most beautiful monuments, The Jefferson Memorial. It’s a truly iconic location and even with the Cherry Blossom season in full swing, they were even able to fight the crowds to find a small space among the blooms that was just for them! The sun was shining so bright morning that it seemed to be laughing at the clouds that covered their day last summer. We love that Alicia Lacey Photography was able to get some stunning shots to commemorate Kaylie and TJ’s love!

W Hotel There are many great rooms at the W Hotel that you can choose for your reception or rehearsal dinner, but we love the Altitude Room and POV, the hotel’s rooftop lounge complete with stylish decor and city views. Take in the Washington Monument from any of the floor to ceiling windows while sipping on a delicious cocktail in this swanky environment.

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) This historic landmark boasts an array of beautiful spaces for a wide variety of events. With its views of the Washington Monument on the portico, and its indoor elegance and character in O’Byrne Gallery, this space makes for a memorable wedding venue. The Connecticut Board Room overlooks the White House Ellipse and would make for a beautifully intimate rehearsal dinner space with its gold-leaf moldings and crystal chandeliers.

101 Constitution The Terrace at 101 Constitution provides the perfect backdrop for the wedding of your dreams! Enjoy amazing views of the Nation’s Capital in this superb location. The availability of a tent takes the worry out of your wedding day and the views of DC are unforgettable. This space is great for intimate gatherings and can be designed to fit your tastes as a couple.

Newseum By far one of the most innovative and unique wedding venues, the Newseum has a plethora of options for you to choose from should this be “the one.” Perhaps you’d like to host your nuptials in the Knight Conference Center and terrace, where the breathtaking views of the US Capitol and surrounding city can be explored, or if that’s not enough, you can take over the entirety of the museum for a top-to-bottom, unforgettable extravaganza. The Newseum is happy to host Wolfgang Puck Catering, which makes for scrumptious rehearsal dinners and wedding receptions.

Old Ebbitt Grill This distinctive and impressive location holds a long political history and couldn’t be in a more perfect spot! Two blocks from the White House, the Roof Terrace at Old Ebbitt Grill has incredible panoramic views of DC and its most historic landmarks. While the Atrium and Full Atrium provide enough space for a large reception, the Cabinet Room could be a great spot for a rehearsal dinner or a more intimate affair. Impress your guests with this venue’s background as a popular gathering place for presidents, generals, lobbyists, and theatergoers since 1856.

The Hay-Adams The crown jewel of The Hay-Adams, Top of the Hay has an unparalleled view of the White House. With its L shaped space and wrap around rooftop deck, your guests will be able to look out over the city of DC at all times. The French doors and windows and trellis-like lattices give this space a romantic and elegant feel.

Potomac View Terrace Located at the top of the American Pharmacists Association, this venue has a stunning view of the National Mall, including some of your favorite monuments: Lincoln and Washington. With indoor and outdoor space, including a permanently tented area, you cannot go wrong with this venue as your choice. There are tons of options for you to make the various spaces your own for your reception or rehearsal dinner, and if the view and ambiance wasn’t enough, Occasions Caterers will supply the food and they are simply amazing!

DAR Foodie Infused Wedding: Amanda + Klaas
January 18, 2016

Unique food presentations and incorporating the grooms Belgian roots into the wedding were top priorities when Amanda and Klaas planned their DAR ceremony and reception. The wedding was catered by their family friend and Top Chef contestant Bart Vanadele, so you know was a culinary dream! From the unique appetizers of seafood pushups and pumpkin soup to a colorful lobster salad complete with rose petals, guests never went hungry for a second. The delicious finale came in the form of a wedding dessert bar complete with tubes of creme brulee, chocolate mousse, and macarons surrounded a special cake and, of course, a Belgian waffle bar to tie in Klaas’ family heritage. We loved how the couple infused a soft color story of peach, muted greens, and pops of burgundy to accent the beautiful architecture of DAR’s O’Byrne Gallery and a subtle nod to the upcoming fall weather approaching their wedding date. A special thank you to Alicia Lacey Photography for sharing this quintessential DC foodie wedding with us!

From the Couple:Our main priority was to provide an intimate ceremony and reception that made our guests feel comfortable while building a truly celebratory atmosphere. For those reasons, we focused on finding venues flexible to both of these goals.

We chose DAR O’Byrne Gallery because of it’s cozy but elegant indoor setting and fun outdoor portico for dancing. We also wanted the wedding to reflect “us” and our background. We graduated at DAR, which is just blocks from where we met at Johns Hopkins SAIS. It was the perfect fit! Similarly, we held our ceremony at St. Matthews Cathedral in Dupont because we were parishioners there during graduate school.

Bringing in Klaas’ Belgian roots was important to us, especially since several of his family members were flying across the Atlantic to attend! We incorporated Klaas’ Belgian background by having the wedding catered by a family friend and Belgian restaurant chef, Bart Vandaele. Appetizers included mini-mushroom waffles and croquettes, while the entree was a Belgian braised short rib and the desserts included creme brulee, chocolate mousse, and waffles- all Belgian specialties.

Advice from the couple: Do your research, keep an open mind, and personally get to know your vendors. Doing so builds trust and makes for a smoother wedding day. For example, we were so blessed to find Alicia, our photographer, who became an integral part of our wedding planning process and who we now consider a friend. Try not to leave any to-do’s for the week of your wedding. This may be the only time of your lives where you have all of your friends and family together in one place, so try to spend every minute you can with them. You won’t regret it!

DAR-Foodie-Wedding-Alicia-Lacey-Photography-78 DAR-Foodie-Wedding-Alicia-Lacey-Photography-79

We really placed a big importance on creating an intimate setting by having our friends and family get to know each other prior to the wedding day. We organized a few events on the week of our wedding for those that came into town early. We all went to a Capitals game, and Klaas’ sisters helped create a social and interactive atmosphere at the rehearsal dinner by mixing our very competitive families, and then playing an Amanda-Klaas trivia game.

Congratulations to Amanda and Klaas, and we wish them years of happiness and love!
