It isn’t difficult to get excited about a love story that includes a proposal in the middle of an ice skating rink, two college sweethearts and a wedding day at a boutique bed and breakfast in the middle of Virginia wine country! We are so very excited to share Mollie and Garrett’s Walden Hall Virginia wedding with our readers today. Full of lush greenery arranged by Garrett’s mother (who happens to be a florist) and endless cupcakes, today’s wedding features a joyful couple ready to begin their married life together.
When the pair was looking at local wedding venues they knew that we wanted to stick to this area. It’s an area where they spend a lot of time and they just love it! They spent a weekend looking at venues with their parents; Walden Hall was actually the first one they visited and they fell in love with it! They loved that they could stay at the venue, that there were outdoor and indoor areas, and the flexibility of the space. Mollie and Garrett wanted a rustic, yet elegant wedding; this is Walden Hall to a T! Mollie loves natural, soft colors, and lots of greenery. We can definitely see this throughout the entire wedding. The white flowers, greenery and gold accents created a ton of romance! Thank you so much to Lieb Photographic for sharing this beautiful, lush wedding with us today.
Tell us your proposal story: From the groom’s perspective: On the day of the proposal I got off work early to make reservations at a place we had been dying to go to in DC, Rose’s Luxury. They only take reservations the day of and you have to wait outside in line for reservations. So I ended up driving into DC and waiting about 1.5 hours to get a spot later that night. I drove back home and picked Mollie up (telling her I was just getting off work).
Before dinner, I brought her to the Ice Skating rink in the Sculpture Garden which had been on our bucket list. We got skates on and after some warming up I started to plan when I would get down on one knee. The rink was crowded so I had a difficult time thinking about how I would pull her out of the crowd. Then, unexpectedly the loud speaker went off and said everyone needed to clear the ice for the zamboni. I pulled her into the center of the rink and got down on one knee, somehow without falling over. She had no idea what was going on until I pulled the ring out and she happily said yes.
Please describe any DIY, handmade, or personal details: The flowers for our wedding were very special to us because they were done by Garrett’s mom! It was so special to be able to have my now mother-in-law play such a major role in our wedding and to see her work everywhere. Not to mention she is extremely talented and she made me the bouquet of my dreams! My dad also built the arbor for our ceremony and my mother-in-law did the flowers on the arbor. It was true symbolism of our families coming together! In addition to the flowers and the arbor, Garrett brewed two of his own beers to have on tap during the cocktail hour and reception!
What were your favorite parts of the day? It’s difficult to pick our favorite parts of the day because as a whole it was truly the best day of our lives! Our favorite part of the day would have to probably be the reception. Everything from the speeches to dancing with all of our friends and family was so perfect! A memorable moment was after our wedding, all of our family and a few of our friends jumped into the pool onsite in their wedding attire!
The most important thing to us is that we wanted to be able to enjoy ourselves and we wanted our guests to have a good time. With this in mind, we chose to splurge a little more on our caterer and transportation for our guests. The wedding venue was already so beautiful so we spent less on decor. We also skipped a big cake and had a small cake with cupcakes for our guests.
