Creating a Publication Worthy Wedding
April 27, 2017 Alex Hamilton

Creating the picture perfect day is something most brides strive for when planning their wedding. We know that creating lasting memories is what weddings are all about, so documenting this is key! After you’ve put all of your blood, sweat, and tears into achieving this, you may want to share it with the world. We can’t blame you! If that’s the case, submitting it for publication is the way to go. We have enlisted the help of one of our favorite DC area wedding photographers, Astrid of Astrid Photography. She is giving us helpful hints on creating the ultimate publication worthy wedding day!

Create a story with your details. We can’t stress enough that details are SO important when you are attempting to submit your wedding for publication. Of course people shots are important to you when you look back on your wedding years from now; detail shots are important to the people who publish wedding in blogs and magazines. “Gathering the details beforehand and giving them to your photographer allows them to capture the entire theme of your day. The smallest details such as the stamps you use for postage, a special pattern that is repeated throughout the day, or even unique in-season florals can all come together to create a cohesive story that readers will relate to.”

Make the most of the day. Timing is everything on your wedding day. Make sure you go over your timeline with your photographer to get as much as possible out of your day. Keep an eye on when sunset is to ensure you are capturing your bride and groom portraits before sun sets. Sometimes scheduling a first look enables you to use the time after the ceremony for portraits during that magical golden light that takes place in the couple of hours leading up to sunset. The point is to communicate with your planner and photographer to make the most out of the natural light to get those dreamy publication worthy photographs.

Schedule time for the reception details. Once again, scheduling and timing are playing a huge role! “After spending months choosing the perfect linens, florals, lighting, tenting, cocktail glasses etc. it would be a shame not to photograph them! You always see lots of great inspiration in publications for various ways to set a table at different times of year, for different styles of events. Those photos do NOT happen in 5 minutes! Make sure you give your photographer enough time to capture all those gorgeous details you spent so much time pulling together.” Don’t forget that each photographer has different needs so again, communication is key!

Have fun! “Enjoy your day and let your photographer capture the true love and joy between you and your fiancé, and all the loved ones surrounding you.” Despite what we said above, ultimately the most important photos are of the people you love in the long run. Have great fun with your details and submit away to your favorite mag or blog, but don’t lose sight of what’s most important at the end of the day! This will come through in your photos to create an authentic, amazing, in the moment day!

Thank you Astrid Photography for all of the amazing insight!
