In early April we did a post featuring the perfect flowers for your spring wedding (check it out!) that included a plethora of fantastic spring florals available to incorporate into the decor and design of your DC area wedding! Now that we are charging head on into Summer, we are featuring a new selection of our favorite blooms with the help of the amazing Shelly Bagdasian of B Floral Event Design, one of our favorite UWL wedding vendors! Summer flowers mean local flowers and the DC area has some beauties!
Local Hydrangea: One of the most popular wedding flowers all year around is the big, beautiful hydrangea. Local hydrangea has a slightly different look than the standard white, blue, or pink hydrangea that you may be used to seeing. The local variety is still large and has the same petal structure, but has a unique coloration that can only be found in the summer and fall locally and we can’t get enough of them!
Lilies and Dahlias: We are very fortunate to have several farms in the DMV growing amazing lilies and dahlias. These farm fresh beauties have huge blooms and are the perfect fit for bouquets, centerpieces and large focal centerpieces. They come in almost every color from white, cream and blush pink, to orange, red, burgundy, and eggplant. They even come in variegated colors if you are looking to pack a lot of color into your arrangements.
Delphinium: A popular blue flower that comes in long stems with small flowers. These are the perfect shape for tall spraying arrangements and come in vibrant blue shades. These work wonderfully if you are looking for a soft, country-garden feel without sacrificing any drama.
Cosmos, Zinnia, and Coneflower: Couples hoping to capture the look and feel of a summer garden in full bloom would succeed with any or all of these lovelies. These daisy-like flowers grow in an array of different colors, making them very adaptable for bouquets, accent items or centerpieces alike.
Coreopsis and Sunflowers: The flowers could not be more perfect for a cheery summer wedding that leans toward a rustic aesthetic. They also tend to be cost effective, and can even be easily grown in your own garden. These blooms will give your wedding day a simple wildflower feel.
Celosia and Coxcomb: Paired with dahlias and garden roses, these two flowers with their unique architectural components create eye-catching centerpieces or cake flowers.
Don’t forget the greenery, grasses and fillers! A summer arrangement is not complete without some type of summer foliage or grass. These elements add an instant summer feel to any bouquet, arrangement, or decor item. Some favorites include avalanche, baptisia, Queen Anne’s lace, lady’s mantle, and so many more!
