Welcome back! Now it is time for Cathryn and Joshua’s classic Washington DC wedding reception! After their interfaith wedding ceremony, this charming duo headed to Decatur House for a black-tie affair that’s drenched in elegance. Every image from Modern Life Portraits tells the story of their magical day planned by Aimee and Lauren at A. Dominick Events. But my absolute favorite detail would have to be their DIY wedding menus! They recreated the menus that Josh’s grandparents used at their 1930s NYC wedding at the Ritz-Carlton. How sweet is that!?
From Cathryn: We wanted the reception to feel more like a dinner party than a wedding reception. Our spectacular planners, Lauren and Aimee from A. Dominick Events, really understood what we wanted. This meant black bridesmaids dresses (nothing too bridesmaid-ey), ivory and blush flowers, beautiful ornate tables, and a formal seated dinner complete with a cheese course.
We got our printer to re-create the menus that Josh’s grandparents used at their wedding at the Ritz Carlton in New York in 1933. They were stunning, so classic, and it was really nice to feel like we were carrying on something that might become a family tradition.
In terms of budget, food and beverage were our top priority because we wanted the choices to represent who we are and what we love to serve our friends and family. Josh chose every liquor on the bar and picked his and hers signature cocktails for each of us.
Cathryn’s wedding planning advice for other DC-area couples:
Do what you want with your wedding, and don’t listen to anyone else. I don’t know how many people challenged us along the way about the cake (I didn’t want one), the classic jazz band (“Don’t you want people to dance?!”), the food (“People will be too full to have fun”), and on and on. Somewhat surprisingly, no one shared any concerns about our interfaith ceremony. In the end, it was EXACTLY what we wanted and everyone had a fabulous time. I’m so glad we stuck to our vision.
