Hello and welcome back to Shauna and Jonathan’s wedding in Virginia on a riverboat in Old Town Alexandria! (Did you see their outdoor wedding ceremony on the boat??) After the ceremony, they headed upstairs on the boat for some cocktails and then inside for dinner and dancing. How fun?! Beth Hamilton Photography was there to capture all of the memories and simple details, like the goldfish centerpieces and family-made boat flag and gingerbread cookies!
From Shauna: The main priority for our wedding was to keep it about the two of us. The wedding business is a booming industry and we wanted to make sure not to get lost in all the “wedding hype” because that is very easy to do since you and everyone else are excited about the wedding. We decided the main things we wanted to splurge on was great food and drinks, thinking that make a great time for us and our family and friends! We decided not too splurge on flower center pieces, so keeping with our nautical theme and wedding colors of blue and orange we used goldfish for our center pieces! After the wedding, the Hotel Monaco, where we stayed, was gracious to take the goldfish and add them to their aquarium.
From Shauna: Jon’s grandmother who just celebrated her 94th birthday makes gingerbread men every Christmas for the family. Family that does not live near Grammy continues this tradition every year with her recipe, including Jon’s mom. Jon proposed to me by writing “Will you marry me?” on the cookies Christmas of 2012. I love this tradition and decided to make a cookie for all of our guests and attached their escort cards to them! Though I decorated them differently than we do at Christmas by making them brides and grooms, they are still the same gingerbread recipe! My mom also sewed Jon and I a flag that we were able to fly aboard the Cherry Blossom Riverboat as we sailed up and down the Potomac River!
From Shauna: Though my favorite memory from my wedding day is the whole day, if I had to choose one Jon and I both agree that our favorite detail was our last song Sweet Caroline! We don’t know how it happened but everyone ended up forming a big arm-in-arm circle around the dance floor with Jon and I in the middle! Everyone sang and danced to the song at the top of their lungs! It was awesome!
Shauna’s advice for other couples in the DC area planning a wedding:
Our advice is to try to keep the wedding about what the two of you want. Everyone else will have their opinions, but as long as the two of you stay on the same page about your choices that’s what it is all about!
