If ever there was a case to DIY flowers for your wedding, then I encourage you’ll love Sarah and David’s wedding in Virginia today! With L Hewitt Photography on hand, Sarah and David were fortunate to have the help and talents of many of their friends and family to help them pull their wedding off. For starters, the bridesmaids DIY’d their flowers! And, cupcake baking! But, you’ll have to come back later this morning to see their reception. For now, check out Sarah and David’s laid-back wedding on the gorgeous outdoor grounds on the The Hendry House in Arington.
From Sarah: Home is where the heart is, and we wanted to welcome all our friends and family to our home: Washington, DC. So we had a fun, laid-back outdoor wedding near DC on a budget. We chose Hendry House in Arlington, VA as our ceremony and reception site because it has tons of natural beauty and a cozy, intimate feeling. We wanted our family and friends to mix and mingle, so we had open seating at the reception under a tent on the front lawn of the house. Our parents brought old family photos with them so we could have all of our loved ones with us on our wedding day. We ended up spending about half the cost of an average DC wedding by doing a lot of things ourselves and working with vendors to get things into our price range. We used Hendry House as the inspiration for our color palette: gray-green, white, coral pink and yellow, and worked those colors into everything.
From Sarah: My favorite part was making the flower arrangements – we used roses, thistle, dusty miller, ranunculus, queen anne’s lace, solidago, baby’s breath, and a bunch of other wildflowers…We did a lot of DIY projects. There were email save-the-dates. We printed invitations at a retail print shop. I collected pasta jars and wine bottles for months for centerpieces and we got flowers from a local wholesaler and had a flower arranging party the day before. The bridesmaids and I made our own bouquets. We folded and fluffed 40 tissue paper flowers for decoration.
