Get your passports ready, because we have a list of unexpected honeymoon travel ideas that are perfect for couples who were married (or are about to be married!) in the Washington DC area. (Do you think I need a vacation?? I’ve had the travel bug lately, as I just featured real Washington DC area couples and their honeymoon ideas!) Getting away after you’ve just had your wedding in the DMV can be tough for personal and financial reasons, not to mention the difficulty of getting away from work for a vacation. That’s why today we are talking about honeymoon travel spots that are easy trips from from the DC region. I tasked Alisa, owner of DC-based Luxe Traveler Club, with giving us a few unique honeymoon spots that are simple trips from the DC area for those newlyweds who want to fly from Baltimore (BWI) Reagan National (DCA) or Dulles (IAD) airports.
Alisa is a luxury travel designer at Luxe Traveler Club and she specializes in creating VIP-style travel itineraries for honeymooning couples who are looking for a post-wedding vacation that is personal and simple, but not boring. (Did I mention that her honeymoon travel services are free?? Yes, you can work with her to design a luxury honeymoon at no cost to you! I know that’s a refreshing change after that hefty price tag of a DC area wedding!) With all of the stress of planning a wedding, especially here in the Washington DC area, your honeymoon can be an after-thought. Maybe you and your fiance promised to deal with planning your honeymoon after your wedding, but then you never quite got around to working on it. Whatever the reason, don’t delay in designing your dream honeymoon! It is easier, closer and more free than you think! Besides, from every newly married couple that we’ve heard from here in the DMV, none of them regret taking a honeymoon! Take it away, Alisa…
Your honeymoon is the perfect opportunity to decompress after your wedding and enjoy that much needed alone time as newlyweds. However, this post-wedding luxury is often overlooked or rushed during the wedding planning process. Do not overlook this incredible opportunity for you and your new spouse! Your honeymoon is your chance to be totally pampered and treated like true VIPs.
Some married couples want adventure and exploration on their honeymoon, while some want complete relaxation. Most newly married couples want a combination of both! The good news is that your honeymoon is a great time to do both resting and exploring, and it doesn’t have to be expensive or a difficult trip from the Washington DC area. You want to spend your time away from work on your honeymoon together, not traveling to get there!
There are many exotic destinations that you typically hear about for honeymoon travel such as Maldives, Thailand, and Bora Bora. But a honeymoon vacation for the couple married in the Washington DC area, your honeymoon does not necessarily need to be over 25 hours of travel to make it special and perfect!
I have put together a list of five honeymoon and mini-moon vacation options that are direct flights under six hours from Washington DC and Baltimore. These honeymoon destinations for the DC area newlywed travelers will provide less time on a cramped airplane, and more time sitting poolside relaxing or exploring a new city hand-in-hand.
Here are my ideas for unique honeymoon locations within a six hour plane flight from Washington DC or Baltimore, MD:
Newly-launched non-stop service from Baltimore (BWI) will have you on the lovely French island of Martinique in 4.5 hours. This off-the-beaten path honeymoon destination is located in the West Indies in the Caribbean. With temperatures averaging 79 degrees, Martinique is nicknamed the island of the never-ending summer. A combination of white sand beaches and tropical rain forests makes this the perfect pick to combine beach relaxation with adventure. Throw in fantastic food (It is French after all!) and a lively music scene and you and yours have a hot honeymoon pick for the DC area newlywed.
Montreal and Quebec City
The short 1 hour and 45 minute non-stop flight to Montreal from Dulles (IAD) or Reagan National (DCA) will have you exploring the romantic streets of this French-speaking city in Canada in no time. You will find European charm for your honeymoon without the jetlag and the long flight to Paris. With fabulous hotel options and an exciting culinary scene, this pick is a fantastic choice for a newly married couple that loves exploring new restaurants and nightlife. A scenic 3.5-hour train ride from Montreal will bring you to Quebec City. The romance is everywhere in this historic walled city on the St. Lawrence River, from the cobblestone streets to horse-drawn carriage rides, making it a perfect (and easy!) honeymoon get-away for DC area couples.
While the Cancun and Riviera Maya areas have typically been the Mexico honeymoon choices for Washington DC area couples, the newly offered five-hour non-stop flight service from Baltimore (BWI) to the sunny Baja Peninsula in Mexico will have you sitting poolside in no time after your wedding. Los Cabos, which boasts that they have 350 sunny days per year, is made up of two towns, each with its own distinct personality. San Jose del Cabo maintains the look and feel of an authentic Mexican town, with romantic cobblestone streets, intimate fine dining restaurants, and a lovely town square. Cabo San Lucas, on the other hand, is flashier, with a large marina and more nightlife. Luxurious resorts and spas are located between these two towns, giving you great choices for when you would like to get out and explore on your honeymoon.
With white sand beaches and more affordable luxury hotel options, Panama is quickly becoming a honeymoon hot spot, especially for couples in the DC area. A five-hour direct flight from Dulles (IAD) will bring you to Panama City, where hip neighborhoods will welcome you and your spouse with trendy cafes, music venues, and art galleries. A visit to the newly expanded Panama Canal is a must, and for the more adventurous honeymooners there is no better way to see the canal than from your private helicopter ride! A short one-hour flight from Panama City will bring you to the beautiful beaches of Bocas del Toro. The barefoot luxury hotels are intimate and feel like a real retreat. Book yourselves an overwater suite or a villa with a private pool for total honeymoon pampering!
Charleston, South Carolina
A perfect domestic choice to unwind after your big day in the Washington DC area is this Southern charmer that is known for its hospitality, gorgeous architecture, and world-class food scene. After a quick 1.5-hour flight from Baltimore (BWI), Reagan National (DCA) and Dulles (IAD), Charleston’s luxury hotels will make you feel pampered from the moment you arrive. If you would like to have some beach time, you can be whisked away by your private transfer for a short drive to a 5-star beach resort, where you can relax by the pool, get pampered at the spa, play golf and tennis, and just enjoy exploring this island retreat.
Thank you so much, Alisa for sharing these great – and very unique – options for honeymoon destinations that are closer to home here in the Washington DC area. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to grab my passport (or not!) and get out of the DC area for a little vacay! Let Alisa help you plan the perfect honeymoon that reflects your style and preferences by getting in touch with her at Luxe Traveler Club. Don’t forget that her honeymoon travel services are completely free! In addition to taking the stress away from having to plan your honeymoon (on top of all of that wedding planning!) she also has access to some fantastic exclusive travel perks that will allow you to feel like a true, newly married VIP.
