Sometimes you can have the best of both worlds. Victoria and JD eloped back in 2010, and recently celebrated with all their friends and family at a wedding in Virginia, with the help of Wedding and Events by Bliss. With all the wedding jitters out of the way, they were able to enjoy their guests, many of whom came from Spain, where JD is from. If you can drag your eyes away from the seriously stunning bouquets (I know, it’s hard!), you can learn about their beautiful ceremony which included a ring warming (Remember when we talked about unique wedding ceremony ideas?) and vows read in each of their native languages. Be sure to come back later for their eclectic family style reception!
From Victoria: My husband and I met in the 90s when he was an exchange student from Spain. Our families met for the first time at our wedding! We wanted to have a family-friendly outdoor wedding that incorporated my southern roots and my husband’s Spanish culture. My husband and I eloped 12/31/10, so this was our chance to bring together our family and closest friends to celebrate their support in our love. We feel happiest when enjoying the outdoors and were extremely lucky to have such an incredible venue with perfect weather and an early-blooming spring! We wanted to surround ourselves with all the things that make us naturally happy in life: family, friends, nature, great food, awesome music, laughter and love.
We wanted a location that embraced the outdoors (while still providing a rain plan), so that we could use the natural beauty of the location, save money on flowers and decor, and so that younger family members could would be free to play.
We removed our wedding bands at the start of the ceremony, tied them to a ceramic ring warming “plate” made by a family member, and let our guests pass them through the audience. Each guest had the opportunity to bless the rings in their own special way. Guests chose to bless the rings in many different ways: praying over them, joining them with their own wedding bands, kissing them, etc. Our ceremony was bilingual, and we opted to do our vows in each other’s first language. JD’s family was very touched that I did my vows in Spanish. JD said his vows in English. It was a wonderful way of embracing each other’s cultures and accepting the most obvious difference in our backgrounds.
