Sarah and Stephen live in Los Angeles, but Sarah always knew that she wanted to get married in her home state of Virginia. They fell in love with the historic grounds of the Thomas Birkby House in Leesburg and enlisted Amie Otto Photography to capture their beautiful spring wedding in Virginia. Sarah and Stephen incorporated a number of DIY projects, including a beautiful moss “B” (their married initial) and all of the day-of stationery details, along with personal details and vintage-inspired touches.
From Sarah: Although we are currently living in Los Angeles, I always knew I wanted to get married in Virginia where I grew up. Our wedding was a mix of vintage and modern elements which reflects both of our personalities. As soon as we saw the Thomas Birkby House, we knew the historical home and beautiful gardens was the perfect place to hold the ceremony and reception.
Our top priority was creating a wedding where everyone would have a good time but also making sure that we weren’t getting too stressed out about all the details. We tried to make sure we stayed focused on just having a celebration of our love for each other and let the details follow from that.
I did a lot of DIY projects which I absolutely loved! My favorite was the moss covered “B” hanging from the balcony where I threw my bouquet. We also made all of the invitations, table numbers, and matchbooks for the sparklers.
My favorite memory is our first dance. Steve picked the song and I didn’t know what it was going to be until it started. It was such a special moment I felt like we were the only ones in the room.
We used my grandparents’ cake topper from their wedding. They have been married for 65 years and are a true inspiration for us.
Sarah’s advice to other engaged couples in the DC area:
I read a lot of blogs for inspiration and ideas. They were very helpful for planning and there are a lot of great tips out there. It’s so important to be organized; I used checklists and timelines from wedding sites to help me stay on task. It’s also important to know your limit when doing DIY projects. If you are crafty, it’s very easy to get carried away with all of the projects you could do. Know that you don’t have to do everything to have a fabulous wedding that reflects your personality.
